A Mixed Methods Study of Barriers to Help-Seeking for Intimate Partner Aggression in the LGBTQIA+ Community.

People in the LGBTQIA+ community (i.e., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and other gender/sexual minorities) experience greater rates of intimate partner aggression (IPA) than the general population and have fewer help-seeking pathways available. The current research examined the extent to which LGBTQIA+ people's perceptions of barriers to help-seeking were associated with perceptions of societal heteronormativity-the belief that being cisgender and heterosexual is the norm-and whether the source of support was formal (e.g., police, counselors) versus informal (e.

Conflict, community, and collaboration: shared implementation barriers and strategies in two polio endemic countries.

BACKGROUND: Afghanistan and Nigeria are two of the three remaining polio endemic countries. While these two countries have unique sociocultural characteristics, they share major polio risk factors. This paper describes the countries' shared contexts and highlights important lessons on implementing polio eradication activities among hard-to-reach populations relevant for future global health programs. METHODS: A grey literature review of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) followed by an online survey was conducted in both countries. The survey was targeted to individuals who have b

Female Sexual Health: Barriers to Optimal Outcomes and a Roadmap for Improved Patient-Clinician Communications.

BACKGROUND: Although sexual health can be considered a vital sign for overall health, several barriers prevent women from receiving proper medical counseling, support, and/or care for their sexual health needs and concerns. METHODS: Experts in sexual health compiled research and experience on the impediments to women receiving adequate assessment and treatment for their sexual health. Specific solutions and a roadmap for overcoming such barriers and improving patient-clinician communication are presented. RESULTS: Social stigma around female sexuality remains in Western culture and as a resu

Optimizing the Role of Community Pharmacists in Managing the Health of Populations: Barriers, Facilitators, and Policy Recommendations.

The shift to a value-based health care system has incentivized providers to implement strategies that improve population health outcomes while minimizing downstream costs. Given their accessibility and expanded clinical care models, community pharmacists are well positioned to join interdisciplinary care teams to advance efforts in effectively managing the health of populations. In this Viewpoints article, we discuss the expanded role of community pharmacists and potential barriers limiting the uptake of these services. We then explore strategies to integrate, leverage, and sustain these servi

A qualitative study to assess community barriers to malaria mass drug administration trials in The Gambia.

BACKGROUND: Mass drug administration (MDA) is a strategy widely used in the control of human parasitic diseases but has been rarely attempted with malaria, the most common and dangerous parasitic disease in humans. MDA is an intervention strategy that involves simultaneously dispensing treatment to an entire population in a given geographic area. With some areas in sub-Saharan Africa documenting a decline in malaria transmission, the feasibility of MDA to further reduce malaria transmission is being considered. Understanding community perceptions of such an activity is vitally important for th

Tumultuous atmosphere (physical, mental), the main barrier to emergency department inter-professional communication.

BACKGROUND: A highly important factor in enhancing quality of patient care and job satisfaction of health care staff is inter-professional communication. Due to the critical nature of the work environment, the large number of staff and units, and complexity of professional tasks and interventions, inter-professional communication in an emergency department is particularly and exceptionally important. Despite its importance, inter-professional communication in emergency department seems unfavorable. Thus, this study was designed to explain barriers to inter-professional communication in an emer

Spatial measurement of mobility barriers: improving the environment of community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan.

Mobility barriers can impede physical activity, increase the fear of falling, and pose a threat to the ability of older adults to live independently. This study investigated outdoor mobility barriers within a nonretirement public housing community located in Tainan, Taiwan. Site observations and interviews with older adult residents determined that parked motor scooters, potted plants, the rubber tiles of play areas, and a set of steps were the most important barriers. In addition, the space syntax parameters of control value and mean depth were effectively able to quantitatively measure impro

Drug toxicity and cost as barriers to community participation in HAT control in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

INTRODUCTION: Active case-finding programmes by mobile teams are the cornerstone of West African Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) control. Low attendance rates of screening and low uptake of treatment after diagnosis are major problems. The objectives of this survey were to explore community perception of HAT, to assess acceptability of control activities and to identify barriers amenable to intervention. METHODS: In September 2004, we conducted 33 focus group discussions with beneficiaries of the HAT control programme among various ethnic groups in two ecological settings (savannah and fl

Barriers and facilitators for community surgery in general practice / family medicine settings: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Rising healthcare demand and costs have prompted policymakers to explore strategies for delivering appropriate care closer to patients. In Ireland, Sláintecare supports the transfer of suitable hospital activity to community-based providers, while the United Kingdom's Fit for the Future: 10-Year Health Plan promotes a shift towards community-based care. Community surgery may contribute to this transition, but successful implementation requires appropriate resources, training, governance, and collaboration. This scoping review aimed to synthesise existing evidence on barriers and fa

Surmountable Caregiver Barriers to Paratonia Treatment in Community-Dwellers with Dementia: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

Paratonia is an involuntary, variable resistance to passive movement that affects 90%-100% of patients with advanced dementia, interferes with care and contributes to caregiver burden. Botulinum toxin A is a candidate treatment but has no approved indication, and whether community-dwelling caregivers would attend quarterly outpatient treatment has not been characterised. In an online survey of 274 caregivers, 65.3% reported the care-recipient's paratonia exerted a moderate to extreme impact on their own physical, emotional and mental well-being, and 84.6% reported they would attend an outpatie

Identifying Barriers to Fall Prevention for Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Delaware:: A Qualitative Study.

OBJECTIVE: Falls are a major public health concern among older adults in the United States, and Delaware reflects this growing burden. Fall-related mortality increased steadily from 2012 to 2021, coinciding with a rapidly aging population. Despite the availability of effective evidence-based fall-prevention programs, adoption remains limited among high-risk populations. Grounded in implementation science, this study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators influencing the uptake of fall-prevention interventions among community-dwelling older adults and healthcare providers in Delaware. Barriers and facilitators to the utilization of cancer screening services in two Arctic Indigenous communities in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous communities in Canada have high age-standardized rates of cancer mortality. Remote communities in Canada's northern territories have a high proportion of Indigenous residents and disproportionately low utilization rates of screening services for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers, which could contribute to delayed cancer diagnosis and less favourable clinical outcomes. Knowledge is limited regarding the under-utilization of cancer screening services. OBJECTIVE: This study identified factors contributing to the underutilization of breast, cervical, and colorectal c

Glycosylation in gut-brain communication: from the intestinal barrier and microbiota to immune and neural signaling.

The gut-brain axis is a complex bidirectional communication network linking the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. Its dysregulation is closely associated with a wide range of gastrointestinal, metabolic, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Glycosylation, one of the most prevalent and structurally diverse post-translational modifications of proteins and lipids, is increasingly recognized as a regulator of multiple processes within the gut-brain axis. In this review, we summarize evidence that glycosylation influences several steps of gut-brain communication, including intestina

Identifying Barriers and Strategies to Support a Community Navigator-Driven Approach for Lung Cancer Screening.

Background/Objectives: Although lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, rates of screening have remained persistently low nationwide. This study sought to identify barriers, facilitators, and support strategies necessary for implementing a novel community health navigator workflow to improve lung cancer screening uptake in both rural and urban settings. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with primary care providers (n = 5), community scientists (n = 7), community health navigators (n = 4), and radiology staff (n = 2). Facilitators and barriers to community-based HIV testing in Guinea: a CFIR-based implementation analysis.

INTRODUCTION: In Guinea, where 36% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) are unaware of their serostatus, innovative screening strategies are crucial to achieving the joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS' 95-95-95 targets. Community-based HIV testing, as recommended by the World Health Organization, aims to reach at-risk populations by leveraging local resources and actors. Using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), this study assessed facilitators and barriers to implementing community-based HIV screening across 10 pilot sites in Guinea, with the goal to optimizing i

Enablers and barriers to implementing cholera interventions in Nigeria: a community-based system dynamics approach.

Nigeria accounts for a substantial cholera burden globally, particularly in its northeast region, where insurgency is persistent and widespread. We used participatory group model building workshops to explore enablers and barriers to implementing known cholera interventions, including water, sanitation and hygiene, surveillance and laboratory, case management, community engagement, oral cholera vaccine, and leadership and coordination, as well as exploring leverage points for interventions and collaboration. The study engaged key cholera stakeholders in the northeastern States of Adamawa and B

Barriers and facilitators to opioid agonist therapy in rural and remote communities in Canada: an integrative review.

BACKGROUND: People living in rural and remote communities in Canada are often disproportionately impacted by opioid use disorder. When compared to urban centres, rural and remote populations face additional barriers to treatment, including geographical distance as well as chronic shortages of health care professionals. This integrative review of the literature was conducted to explore the facilitators and barriers of OAT in rural and remote Canadian communities. METHODS: A search of the literature identified relevant studies published between 2001 and 2021. RESULTS: The search strategy yield

Mobile Applications: Breaking Barriers to Early Breast and Cervical Cancer Detection in Underserved Communities.

BACKGROUND: Although potentially curable with early detection and timely treatment, breast cancer (BC) and cervical cancer (CC) remain leading causes of death for Colombian women. Lack of education, complicated administrative processes, and geographic limitations hinder early cancer detection. Today, technological tools permeate the society and could assess user risk, deliver customized information, and provide care coordination. We evaluated the effectiveness of a free mobile application (mApp) to reach women, understand misconceptions, identify users at risk for BC and/or CC, and coordinate
