This article presents findings from a qualitative study of the Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities project in the United States. We conducted 27 interviews with community health workers (CHWs), recipient program staff, and program partners. Thematic analysis revealed two main themes-organizational capacity and political support-and four subthemes. We illustrate participants' varying experiences of CHW integration and organizational capacity building by partners to sustain and fund the CHW workforce, while recognizing the vast contributions CHWs provide communi

OBJECTIVE: To identify demographic, social, and clinical factors associated with HIV self-management and evaluate whether the CHAMPS intervention is associated with changes in an individual's HIV self-management.
METHOD: This study was a secondary data analysis from a randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of the CHAMPS, a mHealth intervention with community health worker sessions, on HIV self-management in New York City (NYC) and Birmingham. Group comparisons and linear regression analyses identified demographic, social, and clinical factors associated with HIV self-management. W

OBJECTIVE: Adults with serious mental illness have high tobacco use disorder rates and underutilization of first-line tobacco cessation pharmacotherapy. In a randomized trial, participants offered community health worker (CHW) support and primary care provider (PCP) education had higher tobacco abstinence rates at two years, partly through increased tobacco cessation pharmacotherapy initiation. This study determined the association between participant-CHW engagement and tobacco abstinence outcomes.
METHODS: This was a secondary, mixed-methods analysis of 196 participants in the trial's interv

BACKGROUND: Universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) is effective in identifying newborns with possible hearing loss (HL). Outpatient follow-up for newborns referred after hospital-based screening remains a potential area of improvement. In this study, we evaluate the efficacy of a community health worker (CHW) intervention in promoting adherence to outpatient rescreening for newborns referred after initial UNHS.
METHODS: A mixed prospective-retrospective cohort study was performed to evaluate a CHW intervention at an academic medical center. Caregivers of referred newborns were contacted b

Large-scale community health worker programs are now growing in importance around the world in response to the resurgence of interest and growing evidence of the importance of community-based primary health care for improving the health of populations in resource-constrained, high-mortality settings. These programs, because of their scale and operational challenges, merit special consideration by the global health community, national policy-makers, and program implementers. A new online resource is now available to assist in that effort: Developing and Strengthening Community Health Worker Pro

A systematic review was conducted to categorize and describe Intervention Models involving community health workers (CHWs) that aim to improve case management of sick children at the household and community levels. The review focused on management of children with signs of malaria or pneumonia. Seven Intervention Models were identified, and classified according to: (1) the role of CHWs and families in assessment and treatment of children, (2) system of referral to the nearest health facility (verbal or facilitated), and (3) the location in the community of the drug stock. BACKGROUND: Hearing loss affects more than 1.5 billion people worldwide, yet fewer than 10% of those who could benefit from hearing aids are able to access them. Barriers such as high costs, limited availability, and a critical shortage of trained professionals in low- and middle-income countries contribute to this gap, while emerging models of care-such as task-shifting to community healthcare workers (CHWs) supported by mHealth technologies-show promise in improving access, affordability, and outcomes in underserved communities.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the feasibility and outcomes of a comm

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth of color experience high rates of mental health disorders, yet they experience challenges to accessing mental health services. Community health worker (CHW) models of care have potential to promote equitable mental health services among LGBTQ youth. Our aim was to understand how CHW models could be adapted to better support LGBTQ youth of color in accessing mental health services. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with LGBTQ youth of color (n = 16), caregivers of LGBTQ youth (n = 11), and CHWs (n = 15) in Massachu

BACKGROUND: In Mali, the burden of epilepsy is underestimated due to socio-cultural barriers that keep most people with epilepsy out of the local health facilities. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of trained community health workers (CHWs) in identifying epilepsy cases (active case detection) as compared to the passive cases detection (PCD) during outpatient visits at the community health centers in the health districts (HDs) of Kolokani, Kayes, Kéniéba, Sikasso, Kadiolo, and Tominian.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the quality and safety of having community health workers (CHWs) in rural Zambia use rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and provide integrated management of malaria and pneumonia.
DESIGN/METHODS: In the context of a cluster-randomized controlled trial of two models for community-based management of malaria and/or non-severe pneumonia in children under 5 years old, CHWs in the intervention arm were trained to use RDTs, follow a simple algorithm for classification and treat malaria with artemether-lumefantrine (AL) and pneumonia with amoxicillin. CHW records were reviewed to as

BACKGROUND: Community health worker (CHW) interventions can improve health outcomes and reduce acute care utilization. Few prior studies have examined the association of CHW interventions with health care utilization among patients within an integrated health system.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of Individualized Management for Patient Centered Targets (IMPaCT), a standardized CHW intervention originally developed within a single health system in Philadelphia, PA, on acute care utilization and primary care engagement among low-income patients at two clinics within an integrated health s

Introduction: PIERS on the Move (POM) is a mobile health (mHealth) application developed for a smartphone to support community health workers (CHWs) for identification and management of women at risk of adverse outcomes from pre-eclampsia. POM was implemented as an addition to routine antenatal care by accredited social health activists (ASHAs) and auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) during the community level intervention for pre-eclampsia (CLIP) Trial in Karnataka state, India (NCT01911494). The objective of this study was to evaluate the experiences of CHWs of using POM in rural India and their

BACKGROUND: Home visiting is supported as a way to improve child health and development. Home visiting has been usually provided by nurses or community health workers (CHWs). Few studies compared the child health advantages of a nurse-CHW team approach over nurse prenatal and postnatal home visiting.
METHODS: A randomized trial was conducted with Medicaid-insured pregnant women in Kent County, Michigan. Pregnant women were assigned to a team intervention including nurse-CHW home visitation, or standard community care (CC) including nurse home visitation. Morbidity was assessed in 530 infants

PURPOSE: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) prevents HIV yet uptake remains suboptimal across the United States. This paper evaluates the impact of outreach activities led by nurse supervised community healthcare workers (CHWs) on the PrEP care cascade.
METHODS: This is an observational programmatic evaluation of LGBTQ + community outreach between March 1, 2016, to March 31, 2020, as part of a public health initiative. Descriptive statistics are used to characterize the data by outreach type.
RESULTS: 2,465 participants were reached. Overall, a PrEP appointment was scheduled for 94 (3.8%) with

This study aimed to explore the perspectives of actors in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention concerning pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in Cambodia. Interviews with national-level policymakers and focus groups with service providers (health care workers and community-based organization [CBO] workers) providing care to key populations (KPs) were conducted in 2022. Actors viewed pre-exposure prophylaxis as an effective tool for reducing HIV transmission among KPs and were committed to its implementation. However, they were concerned about KPs' lack of protection against sexually trans

Pancreatic cancer patients in linguistically diverse communities face significant barriers to timely palliative care engagement, compounded by limited health literacy and cultural communication gaps. California's Inland Empire, home to a large Hispanic population, exemplifies this challenge. Investigators developed and evaluated a bilingual, community health worker (CHW)-delivered palliative care intervention for pancreatic cancer patients and caregivers using a community-centered approach. Educational videos and handouts were created incorporating physician expertise, CHW cultural knowledge,

BACKGROUND: Management and supervision of community health workers are factors that are critical to the success of community health worker programmes. Yet few studies have explored the perspectives of supervisors in these programmes. This study explored factors influencing motivations of supervisors in community health worker programmes.
METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with 26 programme staff providing supervision to community health workers in eight community-based organizations in marginalized communities in the greater Durban area of South Africa from July 2010 to September 20

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus, a public health challenge, disproportionately impacts low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), accounting for 73% of global cases. Due to resource constraints, these nations have adopted task-shifting strategies using community health workers (CHWs). However, evidence on the effectiveness of training CHWs in diabetes management is limited and, at most, indirect due to the limited studies, variable training methods, and complex interventions that make it difficult to isolate training effects.
OBJECTIVE: A systematic review was conducted to answer the ques

OBJECTIVES: Community health workers (CHWs) are the frontline workers providing primary care. This study aimed to assess the impact of training on CHWs' knowledge and perceptions of palliative care (PC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mixed-method research design was adopted. The participants included CHWs posted in a block of North India. Using a pre-post quasi-experimental design, the PC knowledge questionnaire-basic (PCKQ-B) was used to assess the PC knowledge of CHWs before and after a 3-day PC training programme. Paired t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and Tukey post hoc tests were used
