Community perceptions towards children living with albinism in Africa: An integrative review.

BACKGROUND: Community perceptions of children with albinism often influence their inclusion, safety and access to education, violating their basic human rights. Children with albinism in Africa encounter social challenges because of myths, superstitions and discrimination because of a lack of knowledge about albinism, making it difficult for the mother who has given birth to a child with albinism. OBJECTIVES: To synthesise the existing literature on community perceptions of children with albinism in Africa. METHOD: An integrative review process was used, which involved five steps to review t

Flagged observation analyses as a tool for scoping and communication in integrated ecosystem assessments.

Working groups for integrated ecosystem assessments are often challenged with understanding and assessing recent change in ecosystems. As a basis for this, the groups typically have at their disposal many time series and will often need to prioritize which ones to follow up for closer analyses and assessment. In this article we provide a procedure termed Flagged Observation analysis that can be applied to all the available time series to help identifying time series that should be prioritized. The statistical procedure first applies a structural time series model including a stochastic trend m

Case management for integrated care of older people with frailty in community settings.

BACKGROUND: Ageing populations globally have contributed to increasing numbers of people living with frailty, which has significant implications for use of health and care services and costs. The British Geriatrics Society defines frailty as "a distinctive health state related to the ageing process in which multiple body systems gradually lose their inbuilt reserves". This leads to an increased susceptibility to adverse outcomes, such as reduced physical function, poorer quality of life, hospital admissions, and mortality. Case management interventions delivered in community settings are led b

Community-based integrated tick management programs: cost and feasibility scenarios.

Numerous studies have assessed the efficacy of environmentally based control methods to suppress populations of the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis Say), but few of these estimated the cost of control. We estimated costs for a range of tick control methods (including habitat management, deer exclusion or population reduction, broadcast of acaricides, and use of host-targeted acaricides) implemented singly or in combination and applied to a model community comprising 320 residential properties and parklands. Using the high end for cost ranges, tick control based on a single method was estim

Integrated Pharmacies at Community Mental Health Centers: Medication Adherence and Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Patients receiving psychiatric services at community mental health centers (CMHCs) are often prescribed medication that is critical to the treatment of behavioral health conditions, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression. Previous studies have shown correlation between rates of medication adherence and risk of hospitalization, but potential differences in medication adherence and other outcomes for patients of CMHCs by pharmacy type have not been widely studied. OBJECTIVE: To determine potential benefits of placing a pharmacy within a mental health serv

Lockdown Legacy: A Qualitative Investigation of Incarceration, Re-Integration, and Faith Communities.

Incarceration is often thought to be most relevant to the offender and the victim, yet the network of influence involves parents, children, significant others, and community members. Participants in this project viewed a pre-recorded play highlighting the ripple effects of incarceration, then engaged in a series of discussions sharing their own experiences and concerns. Content analysis of those discussions supported a variety of themes including a perceived lack of productive response from communities of faith. The themes are positioned in the framework of efficacy theory, demonstrating the e

Long-term trajectories of community integration after spinal cord injury in a Mediterranean setting: identification, characterisation and trajectory predictors.

Meaningful participation in occupations or employment and/or the ability to engage in societal roles holds significant implications for one's wellbeing and is internationally recognised as a fundamental right for all persons, nowadays representing an emerging policy-making goal. We aimed to identify novel classes of individuals with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) having similar long-term trajectories of community integration and relate them to their demographic and clinical features using a retrospective observational design. Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ) follow-up assessments, m

Beyond comanaged inpatient care to community integration: Factors leading to surgical delay in hip fractures and their associated outcomes.

PURPOSE: Early surgery for older adults with hip fracture has been shown to improve outcomes. We aim to study the factors contributing to delay in surgery (defined as surgery performed more than 48 h after admission) and its associated outcomes in a tertiary hospital in Singapore with an integrated hip fracture program. METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study of hip fracture patients aged more than 60 years over 1 year. We collected data on demographics, premorbid mobility and functional status, time to surgery, postoperative complications, and inhospital mortality. Mortality data and fun

Exploring the state and drivers of community integration for older adults in China: insights from a social ecosystem perspective.

BACKGROUND: Community integration is vital for healthy aging by fostering social participation. This study aims to investigate the current status of and influencing factors on community integration among older adults in China, to fill the research gap in this area, and to provide empirical evidence for the development of healthy aging policies in China and other countries facing the challenges of aging. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between May and October 2024 in Guizhou Province using a two-stage probability proportional to size sampling design. Data from 3,940 valid commu

More that unites us than divides us? A qualitative study of integration of community health and social care services.

BACKGROUND: The integration of community health and social care services has been widely promoted nationally as a vital step to improve patient centred care, reduce costs, reduce admissions to hospital and facilitate timely and effective discharge from hospital. The complexities of integration raise questions about the practical challenges of integrating health and care given embedded professional and organisational boundaries in both sectors. We describe how an English city created a single, integrated care partnership, to integrate community health and social care services. This led to the d

Community integration in the early phase of housing among homeless persons diagnosed with severe mental illness: successes and challenges.

The present investigation used qualitative methods to explore the response to housing and experience of community integration of formerly homeless individuals diagnosed with severe mental illness recently housed in both independent and staffed residential settings. Findings indicate that entering into housing after a long period of homelessness is associated with improvements in community integration for most individuals diagnosed with severe mental illness. However, for a meaningful minority, the adaptation to housing may also be associated with challenges that can complicate the integration

Integration of community-based testing data into national HIV surveillance in Poland, Serbia and Slovakia within the framework of INTEGRATE project.

BACKGROUND: Community-based voluntary counselling and testing contributes to early HIV diagnoses among key populations. Testing data from such decentralized services is however often not standardized nor linked to national surveillance systems. This study aimed to support the integration of community testing data into respective national surveillance and monitoring and evaluation systems for those infections. We present results from three national pilots, focused on improved data collection and transfer. METHODS: Within the Joint Action INTEGRATE different pilot activities were planned and im

Integration of Behavioral Health by Community Health Workers Into a Lifestyle Intervention That Addresses Reduction of Risk for Cardiovascular Disease in Rural Communities.

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and disability in the US, with higher rates in rural areas. Although community health workers (CHWs) are effective in improving CVD outcomes, limited evidence exists on their role in addressing behavioral health needs within lifestyle change interventions. This evaluation assessed the feasibility of integrating behavioral health components focusing on psychologic distress, anxiety, and depression into the Colorado Heart Healthy Solutions program (CHHS) in rural communities by using 3 domains of the RE-AIM (Reach
