BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Individuals after stroke experience participation restrictions. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether measures collected early after stroke predict participation at 3 and 6 months and develop clinical prediction equations.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted. Adults were initially assessed in person at the hospital (<7 days), followed by phone interviews at 28 days, 3, and 6 months. The outcome of interest was participation, measured using the Stroke Impact Scale Participation Subscale. Predictors were prestroke (age, activity/participation

Although the notion of participation pervades the literature on community initiatives, what those involved understand by it is rarely examined, even though such conceptions shape the methodologies adopted, the degrees of involvement enabled, and the coherence between intentions and practices. This article analyses the conceptions of participation held by those engaged in Complejo SACUDE, a public-community initiative co-managed by neighborhood representatives and municipal staff in the Casavalle basin, on the periphery of Montevideo, Uruguay. A qualitative-structural methodology was employed,

As researchers, advocates, and policymakers continue to emphasize community participation for people with serious mental illness (SMI), it is important to understand and strengthen the natural ties that these individuals have in the community. This study investigated how the social support provided by natural supports (i.e., relationships that occur in everyday life, such as friends, family members, co-workers, and neighbors) relates to community participation. It was hypothesized that natural supports would be positively associated with community participation. Forty-eight participants comple

OBJECTIVES: Schistosome infection in childhood is common and can lead to morbidity. A formulation of praziquantel to treat preschool-aged children (PSAC) has been developed recently. This paper assesses the impact of including PSAC in mass drug administration (MDA) on transmission and morbidity at a community-wide level.
METHODS: We used a model of schistosome transmission to simulate the probability of a community reaching elimination as a public health problem (EPHP) and the reduction in morbidity of children resulting from infections until the age of 5 years, measured by a "worm years" met

BACKGROUND: Flooding is a frequent and devastating hazard in Malaysia, exacerbated by the country's tropical climate and rapid urbanisation. Traditional flood management strategies, predominantly focused on engineering solutions, have proven inadequate in addressing evolving flood risks. Community-based flood mitigation (CBFM) has emerged as an alternative approach, leveraging local knowledge and public participation to enhance flood resilience. This study aims to evaluate the role of CBFM in Malaysia, focusing on the effectiveness of public involvement and policy implementation in flood risk

INTRODUCTION: Researchers can often be challenged by meaningful efforts to involve the public and communities in research. Community and health advisory boards (HABs) offer an opportunity to create a fully intentional and honest relationship between researchers and the community.
OBJECTIVE: Most recently, the All Indiana (IN) for Health HAB had four openings and a call was published to our community of over 13,800 individuals in the All IN for Health newsletter. Four hundred eighty-eight individuals submitted applications to become part of the board. In what follows, we share the lessons in m

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Evidence remains inadequate regarding the benefits of participation in community gathering places, which is Japan's primary strategy for preventing functional disability in older adults, in other domains of health and well-being. This longitudinal study examined the associations of participation in community gathering places with an array of subsequent health and well-being outcomes among older adults.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used 3-wave data (2013, 2016, and 2019) from Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (n = 5 879 or 4 232 depending on the outcome). Our

Gambiense Human African Trypanosomiasis (g-HAT) is a neglected tropical disease caused by trypanosomes transmitted by tsetse flies. In 2017, a pilot community-based project was launched in three villages in DRC with the overall goal of empowering community members to control tsetse using Tiny Targets which attract and kill tsetse. In this paper, we assess the community participation process in these three pilot villages over >4 years and evaluate to what extent this resulted in the empowerment of communities. We conducted a qualitative study using a participatory research approach. Together wi

Disability has too often been peripheral to efforts to widen the STEMM pipeline, hampering research quality and innovation. Inspired by change in education delivery and research collaborations during the pandemic, we offer a structure for efforts to recruit and retain disabled scientists and practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring individual free and informed decision-making for research participation is challenging. It is thought that preliminarily informing communities through 'community sensitization' procedures may improve individual decision-making. This study set out to assess the relevance of community sensitization for individual decision-making in research participation in rural Gambia.
METHODS: This anthropological mixed-methods study triangulated qualitative methods and quantitative survey methods in the context of an observational study and a clinical trial on malaria carried out by the

BACKGROUND: Leisure provides pleasure and relaxation, and has health benefits even after a stressful and life-changing event such as a stroke.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined leisure participation among a sample of community-residing stroke survivors in Nigeria.
METHODS: Fifty-five stroke survivors undergoing rehabilitation were consecutively recruited from two government hospitals in Northern Nigeria. Data on pre- and post-stroke participation, and socio-demographic (age, sex, marital, employment, and educational status) and clinical (level of disability, post-stroke duration, stroke type an

A high prevalence of Opisthorchis viverrini infection is usually found in wetland geographical areas of Thailand where people have traditional behavior of eating uncooked freshwater fish dishes which results in cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) development. There were several approaches for reducing opisthorchiasis-linked CCA, but the prevalence remains high. To develop community participation as a suitable model for CCA prevention is, firstly, to know what factors are related. We therefore aimed to investigate factors associated with the community participation in CCA prevention among rural residents

This study aims at understanding the individual and community-level characteristics that influenced participation in two consecutive vaccine trials (typhoid and cholera) in urban slums of Kolkata, India. The study area was divided into 80 geographic clusters (communities), with 59,533 subjects aged > or = 2 years for analysis. A multi-level model was employed in which the individuals were seen nested within the cluster. Rates of participation in both the trials were nearly the same; those who participated in the initial trial were likely to participate in the subsequent cholera vaccine trial.

Children and youth living with physical disability have less opportunities to participate in organized meaningful physical activities in their communities than their typically developing peers. Equitable access to community sport programs that aim to support the health, social participation, and well-being of these children and youth is required. Frameworks for program implementation and evaluation offer practical tools for supporting quality participation. Limited research exists demonstrating the practical application of these conceptual model frameworks. The objective of this scoping review

Government engagement with communities are critical for achieving health equity goals. The available literature is plentiful on community and civil society's barriers to meaningful participation. However, considerably less documentation abounds on how to address barriers to equal interaction within the participatory process, with concrete interventions tested and assessed. This paper aims to bridge that research gap by studying community engagement for health policymaking in Madagascar, focusing on how policy makers can design interaction with communities in a way which decreases power imbalan
