Self-management support by community health workers, referred to as Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) in Nepal, can enhance diabetes care in resource-constrained settings. We assessed FCHVs' knowledge, perceived self-efficacy, and barriers to supporting diabetes self-management before and after training. Guided by the Health Belief Model, we conducted a biphasic, Qual + quan, concurrent, embedded mixed-methods evaluations among 28 FCHVs in four wards in rural mid-Western Nepal. We evaluated the program into two phases, each consisting of focus group discussions (FGDs); trainings that

Parents of infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) frequently experience significant emotional distress, yet neonatology fellows receive limited training in psychosocial support. This study evaluates the use of online standardized-patient simulation to improve fellows' communication skills addressing parent concerns. Fellows (n = 13) completed two virtual interactions with standardized parents, with feedback from a neonatal mental health professional (NMHP), a former NICU parent, and a neonatologist using narrative comments and the Gap-Kalamazoo Communication Skills Assessment Scale

Adolescent gambling has reached unprecedented levels in recent years, warranting research attention due to its links with other risk behaviors and mental health issues. This study focuses on the risk and protective factors in parent-adolescent relationships affecting gambling behaviors in Swedish adolescents. We investigated the role of parenting practices, parental gambling issues, and parental attitudes toward gambling. Participants included 553 upper secondary school students who completed an online survey about gambling, parental behaviors and attitudes, and parent–child communication. The

BACKGROUND: In early 2024, NHS Scotland published community optometrist workforce and activity data at a national level for the first time in the UK. These data are now over two years old, and anecdotal reports suggest changes amongst optometrists' work-patterns post-pandemic. To identify if that data continues to be reflective of the community optometrist workforce, the aim of this paper is to provide equivalent data for 2022 and 2023.
METHODS: Anonymised information about the active community optometrist workforce was extracted from routinely collected eye examination claim data, for period

PURPOSE: This article describes practical strategies for enhancing swallow assessments for individuals with intellectual or cognitive disabilities through the inclusion of visual communication supports (known as augmentative and alternative communication [AAC]). These strategies were developed to support understanding and self-expression during the swallow assessments for individuals with Down syndrome, as part of a large research study. Over the last 2 years, these supports have been integrated into swallow assessments with 14 adults with Down syndrome.
METHOD: Clinicians and researchers wit

BACKGROUND: informal caregivers of people with dementia are at greater risk of developing physical and mental health problems when compared to the general population: they often experience high levels of stress which can lead to a lowered sense of well-being, feelings of being burdened, depression and compromised physical health. The significant beneficial effects of Psychoeducational Interventions on the critical outcomes of caregiver burden and strain were considered sufficient to warrant a recommendation in favour of the intervention. The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly

BACKGROUND: Approximately 2/3 of parents talk about body weight with their children, which can include negative comments that have adverse health implications for youth.
OBJECTIVES: To identify ways to improve supportive parent-child communication about weight, we assessed parent and youth perspectives of barriers to weight communication, preferences for educational resources and support, and whether perspectives differ across demographic groups and weight status.
METHODS: In Fall 2021, online surveys were completed by two independent, unrelated samples of parents (N = 1936) and youth (N = 2

Incarceration and community reentry for rural women reflect gendered processes. We draw upon in-depth semi-structured interviews and focus groups to examine the return of women prisoners to underserved rural communities, while attending to the perspectives of their closest social supporters. Our findings underscore the complexity of the reentry process for rural women and its particular impact on their families. We challenge dominant discourses of personal responsibility that detract from the structura violence and injustice shaping reentry experiences for women and their social supporters. We

OBJECTIVE: Many cancer survivors experience difficulties returning to work. However, there have been relatively few attempts to understand why problems with employer support and work adjustment occur. This paper aims to extend previous work in two ways: first, through exploring the way in which communication and support at work effect cancer survivors on their return to work and during the post-return period; and second, by drawing on a research sample working in the United Kingdom.
METHODS: In all, 26 cancer survivors took part in a semi-structured telephone interview. Interviews were transc

Established in 1991 in New York City and now operating in at least seven other cities, Beacons are designed to rebuild communities of support for children and youth in urban neighborhoods. The Beacon framework is based on research findings and practitioner experience indicating that programs taking a youth development approach are more effective than those focused on "fixing" specific youth problems. Successful Beacon programs provide positive ways to meet young people's need for safety, a sense of belonging, and mastery; they also provide opportunities for decision making and contributing to

A measure assessing client views of the community supports available to them was developed and tested with entrants to outpatient drug free treatment. Items for a Community Assessment Inventory (CAI) fell into four areas of potential social support for treatment entry and engagement: (1) partner and/or family with whom living; (2) family living outside the home; (3) friends; and (4) the community itself. Based on 241 study participants, it was found that internal consistency alphas for the four scales ranged between .79 and .88. Both total CAI score and individual scales assessing support from

In this article, the role of information, support, and communication in promoting adaptation to the risk of breast cancer is reported. These variables emerged from an in-depth study of women at risk for breast cancer because of breast cancer in one or more of their primary (first degree) relatives. Fifty-five women with mothers, sisters, mother and sister, or mother and another primary relative were interviewed using in-depth semi-structured, tape-recorded interviews. After transcription, data were analyzed using qualitative analysis procedures. A three-phase process of adaptation to the risk

The need for permanent housing for the chronically mentally ill has received a great deal of attention over the last several years. One response to the problem has been the development of supportive housing, that is, non-facility-based permanent homes with placement based on clients' functional capabilities and preferences. However, little research has focused on assessing the match between clients and environmental requirements. This study begins to identify the social and clinical characteristics of clients that contribute to selection into different types of housing environments. Ninety-one

Quick-build projects aim to improve the safety and accessibility of streets, parks, and other public spaces using temporary, lower-cost materials. Community engagement (CE) is critical to ensuring quick-builds address community needs and fit community context. Between 2019-2021, 13 quick-build projects were implemented in Hawai'i communities to support walking, rolling, bicycling, skateboarding, and park activation. The quick-build changes included creating curb extensions painted with street artwork and adding park features. This process evaluation study sought to understand how multisector p

BACKGROUND: Beyond the severity of voice, speech and language impairments, one potential predictor of communication success across adult populations with communication disorders may be perceived social support: the expectation that others will provide support if needed. Despite the preponderance of intervention approaches that assume a positive relationship between perceived social support and patient-reported communication success, the evidence base for these relationships is limited.
AIMS: The aim of this systematic review is to explore relationships between measures of perceived social sup

Multiparty communication is not commonly used by people with congenital deafblindness. This study evaluates the feasibility and effectiveness of Get Together, an intervention that supports communication partners in fostering multiparty communication with people with congenital deafblindness. Get Together was used to train four communication partners of individuals with congenital deafblindness. The methods used to assess the program evaluation were questionnaires, a semi-structured interview, and video analysis. The results indicate that communication partners succeeded in having multiparty co
