Psychiatric comorbidity in young heroin users.

In order to determine the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity in a population of young heroin users recruited from outside of the healthcare context, a sample was assembled by targeted sampling and nomination techniques; it was comprised of regular current users of heroin aged between 18 and 30 years and resident in Barcelona, Spain. Psychiatric evaluation was done with the Psychiatric Research Interview for Substance and Mental Disorders (PRISM) semi-structured interview. Of 149 individuals evaluated, 33% were women, whose mean age was 25.1 years; 93% received a diagnosis of heroin dependen

Atrial fibrillation and heart failure comorbidity.

Atrial fibrillation and heart failure have in common that they mainly occur in older patients and the patients have similar underlying heart diseases. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation in heart failure patients varies from 10% to 30%. There are conflicting data whether the presence of atrial fibrillation is an independent predictor for an increased mortality in heart failure. Optimal medical heart failure therapy can improve outcome and may influence the relationship between atrial fibrillation and survival. Keystones for the management of atrial fibrillation in heart failure patients are

The impact of comorbidity on outcomes.

Patients often have other diseases, illnesses, or conditions in addition to the disease under study. These other medical conditions are referred to as comorbidity. Comorbidity can impact on diagnosis, prognosis, and selection of therapy. There are a variety of instruments available to measure the type and severity of comorbid ailments. Comorbidity information can be obtained from direct discussions with the patient, a review of the medical record, or from electronic databases that contain billing information. The method of comorbidity assessment can impact on the interpretation of results. Acc

Comorbidity headache and epilepsy in childhood.

RATIONALE: Epilepsy and headache are both frequent in childhood. Because seizures are frequently a frightening event, other medical conditions--including headache--are often neglected not only by the patient, but also by the physician. The objective of this study was to verify the comorbidity between headache and epilepsy in childhood. METHODS: This was a prospective study conducted at the pediatric epilepsy clinic of our university hospital. Fifty children with epilepsy and ability to describe their symptoms, between 5 and 18 years old, were interviewed according to a semi-structured questio

Comorbidity in dementia: an autopsy study.

CONTEXT: There is a paucity of accurate postmortem data pertinent to comorbid medical conditions in patients with dementia, including Alzheimer disease. OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this study were (a) to examine general autopsy findings in patients with a dementia syndrome and (b) to establish patterns of central nervous system comorbidity in these patients. DESIGN: Review of autopsy reports and selected case material from 202 demented patients who had "brain-only" autopsies during a 17-year period (1984-2000) and from 52 demented patients who had general autopsies during a 6-year period (19

[Chronic pelvic pain and its comorbidity].

The diagnosis of chronic pelvic pain syndrome takes into account the fact that no clear etiology has been identified underlying chronic prostatitis and its associations with multiple somatic and psychological complaints. Based on a representative survey, this study enquires into the prevalence of pelvic pain in the community, its association with sexual dysfunction, somatic complaints and aging. Of the 770 men surveyed, 60 (7.8%) fulfilled the criteria for pelvic pain syndrome. This was assessed by a validated Giessen Prostatitis Symptom Score. Sexual dysfunction (particularly erectile dysfunc

[Comorbidity in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder].

In this paper we review the aspects linked with the comorbidity of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The disorders most frequently associated with ADHD are: Tourette syndrome, generalised development disorders, communication disorders, learning disorders, coordination development disorders, behavioural disorders, anxiety disorders, affective disorders and mental retardation. From the neurocognitive point of view, the executive functions play an important role in ADHD and from the neuroanatomical point of view there is involvement of the frontostriatal circuits. Comorbidity of mood and anxiety disorders.

This article reviews data on the prevalence of panic, social phobia, generalized anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder, and research documenting the comorbidity of these disorders with major depression (MDD). These anxiety disorders are frequently comorbid with MDD, and 50-60% of individuals with MDD report a lifetime history of one or more of these anxiety disorders. The anxiety disorders are also highly correlated with one another, and approximately one-quarter to one-half of individuals with each of the anxiety disorders report a lifetime history of an alcohol or substance use disorder

[Epidemiology and comorbidity of depressive disorders].

Recent epidemiological surveys in general populations of different countries of the world found lifetime prevalence rates of major depressions between 3.3% and 17%. For dysthymia (depressed mood over a period of at least two years with at least two concomitant depressive symptoms) the prevalence rate was found to be between 2% and 7%. The prevalence rates of major depressions and dysthymia are usually higher for females than for males. Bipolar disorders can be observed in about 1% of a general population over lifetime, and they seem to be somewhat more common among males than females. Divorced

Comorbidity and subgroups in childhood autism.

The objective of this study was to identify clinical subgroups in children with childhood autism and to examine comorbidity in each subgroup. The study was based on medical records of 30 inpatients referred to a specialist ward for children with pervasive developmental disorders. Eighteen consecutive patients with an IQ above 50 and fulfilling research criteria for childhood autism were grouped in accordance with the Wing's social subgroups of autism (aloof, passive, and active but odd). Comorbidity, in terms of deficits in attention, motor control, visuo-motor and visuo-spatial function, as w

Comorbidity and outcome in eating disorders.

This article reviews the data on comorbidity, course, and outcome in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Recovery, relapse, the process of recovery, and predictors of outcome are reviewed. Although significant differences exist among outcome studies, the data suggest that patients with anorexia and bulimia tend to improve symptomatically over time. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are associated with substantial rates of comorbidity. The relationship between eating disorders and depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and personality disorders is discussed.

The DANish Comorbidity Index for Acute Myocardial Infarction (DANCAMI): Development, Validation and Comparison with Existing Comorbidity Indices.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate the DANish Comorbidity index for Acute Myocardial Infarction (DANCAMI) for adjustment of comorbidity burden in studies of myocardial infarction prognosis. METHODS: Using medical registries, we identified patients with first-time myocardial infarction in Denmark during 2000-2013 (n=36,685). We developed comorbidity indices predicting 1-year all-cause mortality from all comorbidities (DANCAMI) and restricted to non-cardiovascular comorbidities (rDANCAMI). For variable selection, we eliminated comorbidities stepwise using hazard ratios from multivariable Cox mo

Lifetime panic-depression comorbidity in the National Comorbidity Survey. Association with symptoms, impairment, course and help-seeking.

BACKGROUND: Most prior studies of panic-depression comorbidity have been limited methodologically by use of small clinical samples and incomplete analyses. AIMS: General population data were used to study the association of lifetime and recent (12 months) panic-depression comorbidity with symptom severity, impairment, course and help-seeking in the National Comorbidity Survey (NCS). METHOD: The NCS is a nationally representative survey of the prevalences and correlates of major DSM-III-R disorders in the US household population. RESULTS: Strong lifetime and current comorbidity were found be

Migraine Comorbidities.

Novel knowledge about the interrelationships and reciprocal effects of migraine and epilepsy, migraine and mood disorders, or migraine and irritable bowel syndrome has emerged in recent decades. Over time, comorbid pathologies associated with migraine that share common physiopathological mechanisms were studied. Among these studied pathologies is epilepsy, a disorder with common ion channel dysfunctions as well as dysfunctions in glutamatergic transmission. A high degree of neuronal excitement and ion channel abnormalities are associated with epilepsy and migraine and antiepileptic drugs are u

Asthma and comorbidities.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article summarizes the more common comorbidities which, in the opinion of the authors and supported by the medical literature, frequently affect asthma management. Optimal asthma control requires accurate diagnosis, implementation of effective therapy, and evaluation of coexisting conditions. Comorbidities refer to either coexisting conditions or interacting conditions, with the latter having a more significant influence on the management of asthma. This review provides the authors' clinical perspective of the more common comorbidities and relevant literature reviewed p
