Predictors of professional quality of life among physicians in a conflict setting: the role of risk and protective factors.

BACKGROUND: Unlike other places in the western world, Israeli physicians are prone to be exposed to victims of terror and war (soldiers and civilians alike), while in some cases the patients are close friends or relatives. Moreover, in other armed conflict situations (stemming from war or terror), there is a direct threat to the physician's life and his/her family. Among hospital personnel, there is little research concerning the factors associated with aspects of professional quality of life such as burnout, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction. AIM: The current study compared a s

Mental Health Professionals' Attitudes Towards People with Severe Mental Illness: Are they Related to Professional Quality of Life?

The present study examines whether attitudes of mental health professionals (MHPs) towards severe mental illness are associated with professional quality of life. The Attitudes towards Severe Mental Illness (ASMI), the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and the Professional Quality of Life Scale-5 (ProQOL-5) were completed by 287 MHPs in Greece (25.4% males, 74.6% females). The results indicate that MHPs hold predominantly positive attitudes towards people with severe mental illness. Nonetheless, MHPs' attitudes are deemed to be stereotypical according to ASMI concerning treatment duration, pros

Diagnostic and Translational Utility of the Secondary Traumatic Stress Clinical Algorithm (STS-CA).

Current tools available to assess secondary traumatic stress (STS) do not account for whether the symptoms are functionally related to indirect trauma, determine functional impairment caused by the STS symptoms, and/or consider the duration of the disturbance. This prevents delineation of various expressions of traumatic stress related to indirect trauma that may constitute the phenomenon of STS. The STS Clinical Algorithm (STS-CA) was developed to make these distinctions, so that interventions can be tailored to need. This study investigates the following: (1) the diagnostic concordance betwe

Increasing the capacity to provide compassionate care by expanding knowledge of caring science practices at a pediatric hospital.

BACKGROUND: The emotional aspects of patient care affect care givers' capacity to remain present, safe and caring. As demands increase and capacity decreases care providers are at risk for compassion fatigue (CF). LOCAL PROBLEM: Our organization treats children with complicated diagnoses. Nurses carry a heavy emotional burden due to prolonged exposure to suffering with chronically ill children, ethical dilemmas, and an onus to also care for the parents. METHODS: Our program highlights theory guided practices that honor the complexities of caring for others and creates opportunity for the car

[Médipsy-Care, a program to care for the mental health of caregivers].

The psychological suffering of healthcare professionals is often summed up as burn-out, but we need to think more broadly about compassion fatigue, secondary trauma and vicarious trauma, which are more characteristic of the care professions. This particular clinic makes specific support necessary through, among other things, dedicated units to facilitate access to care for healthcare professionals and target support to their needs. To this end, since 2018 we have been offering a transdiagnostic care program, based on processual therapy. This, developed at the Mon Repos clinic in Écully, is now

Surprising pandemic experiences: A confrontation between principle-based and virtue ethics, and a plea for virtue ethics training for medical students and residents. A rudimentary outline of a four-step model.

BACKGROUND: In past years, physicians have, with a certain continuity, reported increasing numbers of burnout, depression and compassion fatigue in their daily practice. These problems were attributed, not only but also, to a loss of public trust and an increase in violent behaviour of patients and family members towards medical professionals in all walks of life. Recently, however, during the breakout of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020, there were public expressions of appreciation and respect for health care workers that almost universally have been assessed as indic

Resilience Predicts Lower Anxiety and Depression and Greater Recovery after a Vicarious Trauma.

This study validated the French version of the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS-F) and tested the protective role of resilience in the context of vicarious trauma (22 March 2016 terrorist attacks in Brussels) regarding anxiety and depression symptoms. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated a single-factor structure of the BRS-F. Investigation of convergent validity showed that the BRS-F was positively correlated with usual outcomes such as subjective happiness, acceptance, and sense of coherence, and negatively correlated with anxiety and depression symptoms. Lastly, the results of the study showed

Psychological distress in arthritis: The key roles of compassion from others and rumination-A cross-sectional study.

Autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic diseases (AIRDs) pose significant challenges due to persistent symptoms, such as pain, fatigue, and psychological distress (i.e. anxiety and depression). Limited research examined the relationship between psychological distress and rumination, compassion, and pain intensity. Therefore, grounded in social mentality theory, this cross-sectional study examined these relationships in 105 patients (72% women, mean age = 54.1) with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, or axial spondyloarthritis. Hierarchical regression analysis showed rumination as the stronge

Factors preceding occupational distress in emergency nurses: An integrative review.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This integrative review aimed to synthesise current evidence on the factors that precede and contribute to the occupational distress of emergency nurses. BACKGROUND: Emergency nurses practice within an environment challenged by demand exceeding capacity, an inability of staffing to meet this demand in addition to limited resources which contribute to form a unique risk to clinician and patient safety. The risk of occupational distress, while demonstrated across specialties, is noted to be highest in emergency nurses with subsequent impacts for clinicians, organisations an

A personal history of trauma and experience of secondary traumatic stress, vicarious trauma, and burnout in mental health workers: A systematic literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Secondary traumatic stress (STS), vicarious trauma (VT), and burnout (BO) are work-related outcomes commonly ascribed to mental health workers, given their exposure to clients' traumatic experiences. It is theorized that a worker's own history of trauma increases the occurrence of these outcomes, through retraumatization/activation of threat cues during client interactions and overinvolvement with a client's progress. Given the inconsistencies in the literature and the ubiquity of trauma among workers, a systematic review was conducted to examine the association of personal trauma a

The role of mindful self-care in enhancing professional quality of life among hospice medical staff in Poland.

PURPOSE: Given the emotionally demanding nature of hospice care, identifying protective factors is essential for promoting caregiver well-being. This study examines compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction among Polish hospice medical workers, focusing on mindful self-care practices and perceived work support. It also explores whether professional quality of life differs between those who engage in after-work rituals and those who do not. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 97 hospice medical workers (nurses, physicians, physiotherapists, psychologists, and medical caregivers) complete
