This study tested the hypothesis that in vitro cleavage of C3 could be triggered with similar case in serum samples from patients with adult periodontitis (n = 26) as in samples from periodontally healthy subjects (n = 13). MT-2 cells, which produce human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I), are known to have a complement receptor. BACKGROUND: Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a form of thrombotic microangiopathy characterized by uncontrolled activation of the alternative complement pathway with consecutive generation of the terminal complement complex. Mortality is increased, particularly in the first year of the disease. Therapeutic options include plasma therapy and terminal complement blockade using the anti-C5 monoclonal antibody eculizumab. Eculizumab prevents activation of the terminal sequence of the complement cascade and formation of the potentially lytic terminal complement complex (C5b-9).

The development of the complement system was studied by quantitation of total hemolytic complement activity (CH50), C1q, C3, C4, and C3 split product (C3d) in cord plasma of nine human fetuses (17-22 weeks of gestation), 110 preterm (24-36 weeks of gestation) and 30 term neonates. Seventeen patients with the type II (erythema nodosum leprosum) (ENL) reaction were studied. They received multidrug therapy and also the anti-reactional drugs prednisolone clofazimine or chloroquin, and we measured serum levels of complement components before treatment and after the reaction had subsided. We present the case of a 43-year-old man who developed painless jaundice following a respiratory infection. Diagnostic workup revealed severe immune hemolytic anemia, specifically cold agglutinin syndrome (CAS), characterized by a positive direct antiglobulin test (DAT) for complement C3d and IgM antibodies. The patient's clinical course was complicated by significant hemolysis, requiring supportive care and multiple blood transfusions. Further microbiological investigation identified Mycoplasma pneumoniae as the underlying trigger for this secondary CAS.
