Humor experience facilitates ongoing cognitive tasks: Evidence from pun comprehension.

Empirical findings on embodied cognition have shown that bodily states (e.g., bodily postures and affective states) can influence how people appreciate humor. A case in point is that participants were reported to read pleasant sentences faster than the unpleasant controls when their muscles responsible for smiling were activated. However, little research has examined whether the feeling of amusement derived from humor processing like pun comprehension can exert a backward influence on ongoing cognitive tasks. In the present study, the participants' eye movements were tracked while they rated t

Spoken language comprehension in children and adults with Angelman Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Objective evaluation of receptive communication abilities in nonspeaking individuals using standardized behavioral measures can be complicated by co-occurring intellectual disabilities and motor difficulties. Eye tracking during listening may offer an informative complementary approach to directly evaluate receptive language skills. METHOD: This study examined feasibility of eye gaze measures as an index of spoken language comprehension in nonspeaking children and adults with Angelman syndrome (AS; n = 23) using a looking-while-listening procedure. Typically developing children

Dividing attention influences contextual facilitation and revision during language comprehension.

Although we often seem to successfully comprehend language in the face of distraction, few studies have examined the role of sustained attention in critical components of sentence processing, such as integrating information over a sentence and revising predictions when unexpected information is encountered. The current study investigated the impact of attention on sentence processing using a novel dual-task paradigm. Participants read weakly and strongly constraining sentences with expected or unexpected endings while also tracking the motion of dots in the background, and their EEG was record

Rehearsal's effect on recall and comprehension of orthodontic informed consent.

INTRODUCTION: Proper informed consent allows patients to take an active role in their own treatment decisions, and enhanced compliance might improve treatment outcomes. The objective of this research was to determine if handwritten rehearsal of core and custom consent items would increase short-term recall and comprehension. METHODS: A total of 90 patient-parent pairs were randomly assigned to 2 groups. After case presentation, each subject was provided 10 minutes to read a modified informed consent document. Group A received visual printouts containing the 4 core elements (root resorption, d

Common and distinct neural substrates of sentence production and comprehension.

Functional neuroimaging and lesion-symptom mapping investigations implicate a left frontal-temporal-parietal network for sentence processing. The majority of studies have focused on sentence comprehension, with fewer in the domain of sentence production, which have not fully elucidated overlapping and/or unique brain structures associated with the two domains, particularly for sentences with noncanonical word order. Using voxel-based lesion symptom mapping (VLSM) we examined the relationship between lesions within the left hemisphere language network and both sentence comprehension and product

Current etiological comprehension and therapeutic targets of acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity.

Acetaminophen (APAP) is the most popular mild analgesic and antipyretic drug used worldwide. APAP overdose leads to drug-induced hepatotoxicity and can cause hepatic failure if treatment delayed. It is adequately comprehended that the metabolism of high-dose APAP by cytochrome P450 enzymes generates N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), a toxic metabolite, which leads to glutathione (GSH) depletion, oxidative stress, and activation of various complex molecular pathways that initiate liver injury and downstream hepatic necrosis. Administration of activated charcoal followed by N-acetylcysteine

Transcranial alternating current stimulation with speech envelopes modulates speech comprehension.

Cortical entrainment of the auditory cortex to the broadband temporal envelope of a speech signal is crucial for speech comprehension. Entrainment results in phases of high and low neural excitability, which structure and decode the incoming speech signal. Entrainment to speech is strongest in the theta frequency range (4-8 Hz), the average frequency of the speech envelope. If a speech signal is degraded, entrainment to the speech envelope is weaker and speech intelligibility declines. Besides perceptually evoked cortical entrainment, transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) entrain

Reading Comprehension: A Computerized Intervention with Primary-age Poor Readers.

The current study investigates the effectiveness of a computerized reading comprehension programme on the reading accuracy, reading comprehension and reading rate of primary-age poor readers. There is little published literature relating to computerized reading interventions in UK primary schools, and no previous studies have investigated the Comprehension Booster programme. Thirty-eight children (26 boys and 12 girls; aged 6:7 to 11:0) from two schools in East Yorkshire, UK, took part. Half of the participants (the intervention group) undertook the Comprehension Booster programme for a 6-week

Frontal-posterior theta oscillations reflect memory retrieval during sentence comprehension.

Successful working-memory retrieval requires that items be retained as distinct units. At the neural level, it has been shown that theta-band oscillatory power increases with the number of to-be-distinguished items during working-memory retrieval. Here we hypothesized that during sentence comprehension, verbal-working-memory retrieval demands lead to increased theta power over frontal cortex, supposedly supporting the distinction amongst stored items during verbal-working-memory retrieval. Also, synchronicity may increase between the frontal cortex and the posterior cortex, with the latter sup

The anterior temporal lobes support residual comprehension in Wernicke's aphasia.

Wernicke's aphasia occurs after a stroke to classical language comprehension regions in the left temporoparietal cortex. Consequently, auditory-verbal comprehension is significantly impaired in Wernicke's aphasia but the capacity to comprehend visually presented materials (written words and pictures) is partially spared. This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural basis of written word and picture semantic processing in Wernicke's aphasia, with the wider aim of examining how the semantic system is altered after damage to the classical comprehension regions.

Informed consent for biobanking: consensus-based guidelines for adequate comprehension.

PURPOSE: Federal regulations and best practice guidelines identify categories of information that should be communicated to prospective biobank participants during the informed consent process. However, uncertainty remains about which of this information participants must understand to provide valid consent. METHODS: We conducted a Delphi process to define "adequate comprehension" in the context of biobanking consent. The process involved an iterative series of three online surveys of a diverse panel of 51 experts, including genome scientists, biobank managers, ethics and policy experts, and

Grammatical comprehension deficits in non-fluent/agrammatic primary progressive aphasia.

IMPORTANCE: Grammatical comprehension difficulty is an essential supporting feature of the non-fluent/agrammatic variant of primary progressive aphasia (naPPA), but well-controlled clinical measures of grammatical comprehension are unavailable. OBJECTIVE: To develop a measure of grammatical comprehension and examine this comparatively in PPA variants and behavioural-variant frontotemporal degeneration (bvFTD) and to assess the neuroanatomic basis for these deficits with volumetric grey matter atrophy and whole-brain fractional anisotropy (FA) in white matter tracts. Kindergarten predictors of second versus eighth grade reading comprehension impairments.

Multiple studies have shown that kindergarten measures of phonological awareness and alphabet knowledge are good predictors of reading achievement in the primary grades. However, less attention has been given to the early predictors of later reading achievement. This study used a modified best-subsets variable-selection technique to examine kindergarten predictors of early versus later reading comprehension impairments. Participants included 433 children involved in a longitudinal study of language and reading development. The kindergarten test battery assessed various language skills in addit

Environmental monitoring to enhance comprehension and control of infectious diseases.

In a world of emerging and resurging infectious diseases, dominated by zoonoses, environmental monitoring plays a vital role in our understanding their dynamics and their spillover to humans. Here, we critically review the ecology, epidemiology and need for monitoring of a variety of directly transmitted (Sin Nombre virus, Avian Influenza) and vector-borne (Ross River virus, West Nile virus, Lyme disease, anaplasmosis and babesiosis) zoonoses. We focus on the valuable role that existing monitoring plays in the understanding of these zoonoses, the demands for new monitoring, and how improvement

Neural aspects of sentence comprehension: syntactic complexity, reversibility, and reanalysis.

Broca's area is preferentially activated by reversible sentences with complex syntax, but various linguistic factors may be responsible for this finding, including syntactic movement, working-memory demands, and post hoc reanalysis. To distinguish between these, we tested the interaction of syntactic complexity and semantic reversibility in a functional magnetic resonance imaging study of sentence-picture matching. During auditory comprehension, semantic reversibility induced selective activation throughout the left perisylvian language network. In contrast, syntactic complexity (object-embedd

[From Fredrickson's classification of phenotypes--lipoprotein patterns--to genotype comprehension].

First, we will review the major episodes of the initial clinical investigations on lipoproteins. They were carried out in the 1950s, decade of the expansion of Biochemistry. Gofman and his colleagues, at Berkeley, established the power and versatility of the ultracentrifugation method to study the serum lipoproteins. This research group identified Low Density Lipoprotein cholesterol, rather than generic cholesterol as the atherogenic agent. In 1955, Havel et al. at Bethesda, reported a simpler method for the separation of serum lipoproteins by preparative ultracentrifugation, which permitted c

The reading comprehension abilities of dyslexic students in higher education.

The reading comprehension abilities of a group of dyslexic university students were compared with those of non-dyslexic university students. A 655-word passage, followed by literal and inferential questions, was used to measure reading comprehension. The text was designed to be syntactically complex, yet place relatively modest demands on decoding skills. Although dyslexic students performed at a similar level to the non-dyslexic students on the literal questions, their performance on the inferential questions was poorer. An index of the participants' ability to make inferences was calculated

Lexical and prosodic cues in the comprehension of relative certainty.

This study examined the development of children's comprehension of the use of intonation and belief verbs to mark the relative certainty with which a speaker makes a statement. Subjects were presented with a task in which they had to guess the location of an object hidden in one of two boxes over a series of trials. As clues to location, the children were presented with contrasting pairs of statements by two puppets. In the first experiment with 30 children at each of three, four, five and six years of age, statements in each pair differed either with respect to the belief term included - know

Comprehension of three-argument clitic left dislocations in Catalan Broca's aphasia.

People with Broca's aphasia have difficulty understanding certain syntactic structures, but the cause remains debated. This study investigates the comprehension of clitic left dislocations with three thematic roles in Catalan, compared to declaratives (with and without indirect object clitics) and subject topicalisations. These understudied structures are useful for testing the hypothesis that comprehension deficits result from intervention effects due to processing deficits. We conducted a sentence-picture matching task with eight individuals with Broca's aphasia and eight matched controls. R

SkyFind: A Large-Scale Benchmark Unveiling Referring Expression Comprehension for UAV.

Uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) are increasingly deployed to assist humans in diverse tasks, where understanding human intentions is critical to effective collaboration. Referring expression comprehension (REC) links language to visual targets, allowing UAV to recognize human-intended targets of interest, thereby supporting subsequent actions. However, existing REC research is almost exclusively confined to ground-based scenarios, leaving aerial scenarios largely unexplored. In this paper, we formally define UAV-based REC as a new research problem and highlight its unique challenges, including
