BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Compression therapy is an essential part in the treatment of patients with venous leg ulcers. However, not all patients follow this recommendation. The authors tried to analyze how many patients performed compression therapy at the time of data collection and the reasons for insufficient or missing compression therapy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Within a cross-sectional study in 73 patients with venous leg ulcers (patients with epifascial varicosis as well as patients with postthrombotic syndrome), conducted between 11/2007 and 01/2009 in the own specialized wound ambulance

The effectiveness of compression therapy in the treatment of venous leg ulcers has been confirmed in many scientific studies. The healing process depends on many of its parameters, such as the type of compression bandages, their elastic properties and sub-bandage pressure. However, there is no standard protocol that would ensure success for all patients. A pressure of about 83 mmHg provides complete compression for both superficial and deep veins; however, applying compression bandages under such high pressure is a difficult task, even for experienced therapists. Here, we present the case of a

AIM: Very little is known about how compression bandages lose interface pressure. We hypothesized that the loss of interface pressure is correlated with the slippage of the bandages, and studied the interface pressure and slippage of three bandages over 8 hours.
METHODS: Twenty-Seven legs from 27 healthy volunteers were bandaged with short stretch bandages (SS), cohesive short stretch bandages (CS), and long stretch bandages (LS). Pressure sensors were placed above the ankle (B1), below the knee (D), and mid thigh (F). Interface pressures in a sitting position were recorded at the beginning,

The management of highly exuding wounds represents a significant clinical challenge. Protection of the surrounding skin from the effects of exudate, while not stimulating a skin sensitivity, can be difficult in venous leg ulcer patients with their higher than usual predisposition for skin allergy/sensitivity. Venous leg ulcer patients can require frequent dressing changes, which are costly in terms of time taken to wash the limb, dress and apply compression bandages, in addition to the actual cost of dressings and compression bandages. This product focus article considers Sorbion Sana, a dress

Compression bandaging is a mainstay practice in the treatment of conditions such as chronic wounds and lymphoedema. However, the ability of practitioners to measure bandage application to a desired pressure profile is difficult because of sensor limitations. We have used a novel fibre-optic-based, high-resolution sub-bandage pressure monitor to measure adherence to a target pressure gradient during compression bandaging. Participants of various experience (n = 46) were asked to bandage a lower-leg manikin to a gradient of 40 (ankle) to 20 mmHg (proximal calf) in both a blinded trial and subseq

BACKGROUND: The treatment of venous leg ulcers is often inadequate, because of incorrect diagnosis, overuse of systemic antibiotics and inadequate use of compression therapy. Stasis dermatitis related to chronic venous insufficiency accompanied by infected superficial ulcers must be differentiated from erysipelas, cellulitis and contact eczema.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of (1) topical povidone-iodine with and (2) without compression bandages, (3) to compare the efficacy of systemic antibiotics and topical antimicrobial agents to prevent the progression of superficial skin ulcers

BACKGROUND: The high incidence of venous leg ulcers and the difficult to give a complete healing involves in an increase of costs for National Health System. Main therapies to obtain a fast healing are compressive bandages, treatment of abnormal venous flow and in-situ-strategies of wound care. Negative pressure therapy does not conventionally used, because these systems not allow the use of compression bandages. Recently the development of ultraportable devices has improved the compliance and the results.
METHODS: Ten patients with venous chronic ulcer on the lower extremities were recruited

The prevalence of venous leg ulcers and chronic oedema is increasing because of the rise in the older population who have comorbidities. Managing and living with these conditions is extremely costly in resource and human terms and there is often a cyclical process of ulceration, healing and recurrence, resulting in significant physical and psychosocial morbidity. Identifying those at risk and advising on lifestyle changes to prevent progression of these conditions will help in avoiding high wound management and compression costs, nursing input and associated patient morbidity. Compression band

BACKGROUND: Venous leg ulcer(s) are common, recurring, open wounds on the lower leg, resulting from diseased or damaged leg veins impairing blood flow. Wound healing is the primary treatment aim for venous leg ulceration, alongside the management of pain, wound exudate and infection. Full (high) compression therapy delivering 40 mmHg of pressure at the ankle is the recommended first-line treatment for venous leg ulcers. There are several different forms of compression therapy available including wraps, two-layer hosiery, and two-layer or four-layer bandages. There is good evidence for the clin

The treatment of lymphedema aims to reduce the volume and prevent infectious and joints mobility complications. This treatment rarely cure and is usually symptomatic; thus it should be continued throughout the life. The erysipelas and lymphangitis are common complications of lymphedema. Erysipela is always of streptococcal origin and requires systemic antibiotics. The risk of recurrent erysipelas on lymphedema is high. In case of large swelling associated with significant dermal sclerosis, it may lead to decrease joint mobility and functional impairment. The skin cares, manual lymph drainage,

BACKGROUND: Severe ankle sprains are a common presentation in emergency departments in the UK. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of three different mechanical supports (Aircast brace, Bledsoe boot, or 10-day below-knee cast) compared with that of a double-layer tubular compression bandage in promoting recovery after severe ankle sprains.
METHODS: We did a pragmatic, multicentre randomised trial with blinded assessment of outcome. 584 participants with severe ankle sprain were recruited between April, 2003, and July, 2005, from eight emergency departments across the UK. Participants were pr

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the possible influence of non-pharmacological interventions, such as compressive bandages and intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC), on leg oedema and nocturnal polyuria (NP), and the possible interrelation between both pathologies in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), as patients with SCI often have leg oedema and during the night the oedema decreases as a result of natural drainage mechanisms that can cause NP.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with SCI who followed their first rehabilitation after their SCI with bilateral leg oedema and/or with as much or a lar

In elderly patients, even those with a typical venous (stasis) ulcer, coexisting conditions like peripheral arterial insufficiency and diabetes are very common. Therefore, all elderly patients with leg ulcers should have a complete medical assessment. The mainstay of treatment for venous ulcers is compression therapy, exercise and leg elevation at rest. Long term treatment with double bandages (zinc paste bandages and elastic compression), changed once weekly, is the recommended standard treatment in the elderly. Hydrocolloid dressings are also suitable for long term treatment in clean ulcers,

Patients with cancer-related lymphoedema (CRL) commonly refuse treatment with bandaging or hosiery because of hot and humid weather conditions. This review aims to determine the effectiveness and safety of kinesiotaping (KT) in the management of CRL compared to compression bandaging or hosiery. A systematic search of the literature was conducted until July 2015. The primary outcomes were reduction in body part volume or circumference and adverse effects of the interventions. The secondary outcomes were subjective experience of the treatment, severity of lymphoedema-related symptoms and patient
