Landau-de Gennes modeling of confinement effects and cybotactic clusters in bent-core nematic liquid crystals.

We study bent-core nematic (BCN) systems in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) settings, focusing on the role of cybotactic clusters, phase transitions, confinement effects, and applied external fields. We propose a generalized version of Madhusudana's two-state model for BCNs [Phys. Rev. E 96, 022710 (2017)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.96.022710] with two order parameters: Q_{g} to describe the ambient ground-state (GS) molecules and Q_{c} to describe the additional ordering induced by the cybotactic clusters. The equilibria are modeled by minimizers of an appropriately defined free

A Structure-Revealing Tensor Network Paradigm and Its Applications.

Tensor network (TN) decomposition is a powerful data representation tool widely used in machine learning and computer vision. However, existing TN decomposition methods are limited by fixed topologies, which constrain their representational capacity. To overcome this limitation, we introduce, for the first time, an energy-based framework that allows us to reveal a data-adaptive TN structure through the optimization of an energy function. Specifically, we propose a novel structure-revealing TN paradigm, termed SVD-inspired TN decomposition (SVDinsTN). This paradigm enables the formulation of an

Attribute reduction based on classes in incomplete ordered decision systems.

Dominance-based rough set approach (DRSA) has attracted much attention in multi-criteria decision-making problems for data with preference-ordered relations since its inception. However, in the real world, there is often the challenge of incomplete information. This paper addresses approaches to attribute reduction in an incomplete ordered decision system (IODS). Attribute evaluation is crucial in the attribute reduction process. Traditional evaluation functions primarily depend on the relationships between features, neglecting their impact on classification, and incur high computational costs

Modeling the volume of tissue activated in deep brain stimulation and its clinical influence: a review.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neuromodulatory therapy that has been FDA approved for the treatment of various disorders, including but not limited to, movement disorders (e.g., Parkinson's disease and essential tremor), epilepsy, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Computational methods for estimating the volume of tissue activated (VTA), coupled with brain imaging techniques, form the basis of models that are being generated from retrospective clinical studies for predicting DBS patient outcomes. For instance, VTA models are used to generate target-and network-based probabilistic stimulati

Ehrlichia Meningitis Mimicking Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Case Study for Medical Decision-Making Heuristics.

Thunderclap headache is a sudden and severe headache that can occur after an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Subarachnoid hemorrhage is a medical emergency that requires prompt attention and hospitalization. Patients with thunderclap headache often undergo a noncontrast head computed tomography (CT) scan to ascertain SAH bleeding and, if the scan is negative, then undergo a lumbar puncture to look for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) red blood cells (RBCs), which would be consistent with an aneurysmal leak. If the initial CT is negative and CSF is positive for RBCs, patients are usually adm

A Two-Stage Ensemble Machine Learning Pipeline for Breast Cancer Diagnosis from Digital Mammograms.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, and early detection through mammography is essential for reducing mortality. Artificial intelligence can support radiologists by improving diagnostic accuracy. To develop and evaluate a two-stage ensemble machine learning pipeline for breast cancer diagnosis from digital mammograms. The proposed framework combines image preprocessing, multiple convolutional neural networks trained under different conditions, and a second-stage classifier that integrates the CNN outputs. Several machine learning models and feature selection techniques were ev

Learning Adaptive Search with Reinforcement Learning for Small and Fast Object Tracking.

The persistent challenge in visual object tracking, particularly for small and fast-moving targets, lies in the trade-off between effective resolution and contextual information. Fixed search regions cannot adapt to variations in target scale and motion, often resulting in degraded target representation and tracking failures. In this paper, we introduce AdaSAM2, a framework that formulates adaptive search-region selection as a sequential decision-making problem. Unlike conventional per-frame heuristics, our approach employs an event-driven reinforcement learning policy that selects the croppin

Operating-Room scheduling under uncertainty: balancing elective and emergency surgeries.

Balancing elective and emergency surgeries in operating room (OR) scheduling is challenging due to uncertainty in surgery durations and emergency arrivals. Traditional approaches, such as dedicated OR allocation and the Break-in-Moment (BIM) policy, can result in underutilised capacity and high emergency cancellation rates. This paper proposes a two-stage stochastic optimisation model that incorporates endogenous buffer allocation within the OR schedule. Rather than relying on policy-based or heuristically defined buffer times, the proposed framework determines the timing and placement of buff

From sparse semantics to rich instances: Empowering label-efficient LiDAR panoptic segmentation via geometric priors.

LiDAR point cloud panoptic segmentation is a rapidly developing task that unifies object detection, semantic segmentation, and instance segmentation. However, it requires both semantic and instance annotations, which are costly and labor-intensive to obtain. In this work, we propose a novel framework for LiDAR point cloud panoptic segmentation, which requires only a tiny proportion (e.g., 1% or fewer) of semantic labels and eliminates the need for any manual instance label. Specifically, we first adopt an active labeling strategy to annotate a small subset of the semantic labels. Then, we desi

AI-Driven Bio-Constrained Fusion Modeling for Biologically Consistent Multiomics Analysis.

Multiomics learning is central to computational biology, yet existing models often prioritise predictive accuracy over biological admissibility, yielding brittle representations and limited cross-cohort generalisation. We address the problem of learning transferable multiomics representations that remain consistent with known biological structure under missing modalities and distribution shifts. We propose Bio-Constrained Fusion Modeling (BCFM), a constraint-aware framework that integrates pathway coherence and interaction sparsity directly into representation learning via an augmented Lagrang

Deterministic dynamics of distributional multi-agent reinforcement learning.

Understanding how cognition shapes behavior across contexts remains a fundamental challenge for many disciplines. In particular, for the optimism heuristic-i.e., the tendency to overweight positive (relative to negative) information-knowledge remains fragmented, with models developed in specific domains in isolation. Here, we present a unifying computational framework by deriving the deterministic dynamics of distributional multi-agent reinforcement learning. Our approach discretizes return distributions through a finite set of neurons, consistent with recent empirical findings on distribution

Fast and memory efficient partial order alignment with minipoa.

Partial order alignment (POA) has emerged as a fundamental component in long-read error correction, assembly and pangenomics. However, conventional POA algorithms are limited by high time and memory requirements, making them inefficient for large-scale data sets. Here, we present minipoa, a fast and memory-efficient POA tool that incorporates seed-chain-align heuristics, adaptive or static banding strategies, and single-instruction multiple-data optimizations. Minipoa achieves up to a fivefold speedup over abPOA, reduces memory usage by up to 16-fold, and improves correction accuracy, while ma

Bridging maladaptive social self-beliefs and social anxiety: a network perspective.

The Clark and Wells (1995) model of social anxiety disorder postulates that three types of maladaptive social self-beliefs (high standard, conditional, and unconditional beliefs) play a crucial role in the development of fear and avoidance of social-evaluative situations-i.e., the hallmark symptoms of social anxiety disorder. In this project, we examined associations between the three types of maladaptive social self-beliefs and fear and avoidance of social-evaluative situations in a nonclinical community sample (n = 389). We used network analysis to estimate functional relations among aspects

Obstacle-avoidance trajectory planning method for excavators in confined spaces based on improved RRT* algorithm.

As the operation mode of construction machinery is being transformed from traditional manual operation to unmanned autonomous operation, a trajectory planning scheme for obstacle avoidance is proposed in this paper to meet the requirements of unmanned autonomous operation of excavators in complex environments and confined spaces. First, a simulation model is established to represent the working mechanism of the excavator and its surrounding obstacle environment. Next, considering the spatial constraints and environmental obstacles present during excavation and swing-loading operations, an opti

When the brightest is not the best: illuminant estimation from the geometry of specular highlights.

Colour constancy supports stable object colour perception across changes in illumination. Illuminant colour can be inferred from white surfaces or specular highlights, and many models adopt a 'brightest is white' heuristic to identify illuminant colour. We tested an alternative: observers use structured changes in the proximal image to locate highlights even when they are not the brightest elements. Using computer-rendered scenes, we manipulated the reliability of two cues-brightest element and highlight geometry. Each scene showed a single textured sphere lit by multiple point lights with ide

3D Slicer-based preprocedural trajectory planning for transvenous mediastinal biopsy using automated segmentation: a technical note.

Histological diagnosis of mediastinal tumors can be challenging when safe puncture access is limited by adjacent airway and vascular structures. This technical note describes a 3D Slicer software-based preprocedural planning workflow for transvenous mediastinal biopsy using automated segmentation of normal anatomical structures. In a woman in her 60s with a large mediastinal tumor and superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome, a transpulmonary approach was considered undesirable because of the risk of pneumothorax and hemorrhage, and a transvenous approach was advantageous because biopsy and subsequen

A novel evolutionary method for spine detection in ultrasound samples of spina bifida cases.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Spina bifida is a fetal spine defect observed during pregnancy. The defect is caused by unfinished closure of the embryonic neural column. Common diagnosis of the defect is still based on manual examination which aims to detect any deformation on spinal axis. This study proposes a novel evolutionary method for locating spinal axis on sonograms of spina bifida pathology. METHODS: The method involves a meta-heuristic evolutionary approach, where the sonogram is automatically divided into columns and bone regions belonging to the spine are classified. Accordingly, a sp

Towards a Dynamic Exploration of Vision, Cognition and Emotion in Alcohol-Use Disorders.

Visuoperceptive impairments are among the most frequently reported deficits in alcoholuse disorders, but only very few studies have investigated their origin and interactions with other categories of dysfunctions. Besides, these deficits have generally been interpreted in a linear bottom- up perspective, which appears very restrictive with respect to the new models of vision developed in healthy populations. Indeed, new theories highlight the predictive nature of the visual system and demonstrate that it interacts with higher-level cognitive functions to generate top-down predictions. These mo

"Neuro-semeiotics" and "free-energy minimization" suggest a unified perspective for integrative brain actions: focus on receptor heteromers and Roamer type of volume transmission.

Two far-reaching theoretical approaches, namely "Neuro-semeiotics" (NS) and "Free-energy Minimization" (FEM), have been recently proposed as frames within which to put forward heuristic hypotheses on integrative brain actions. In the present paper these two theoretical approaches are briefly discussed in the perspective of a recent model of brain architecture and information handling based on what we suggest calling Jacob's tinkering principle, whereby "to create is to recombine!". The NS and FEM theoretical approaches will be discussed from the perspective both of the Roamer-Type Volume Trans

Computer-aided diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis with optical tomography, Part 1: feature extraction.

This is the first part of a two-part paper on the application of computer-aided diagnosis to diffuse optical tomography (DOT). An approach for extracting heuristic features from DOT images and a method for using these features to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are presented. Feature extraction is the focus of Part 1, while the utility of five classification algorithms is evaluated in Part 2. The framework is validated on a set of 219 DOT images of proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints. Overall, 594 features are extracted from the absorption and scattering images of each joint. Three major
