Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography: Review of Evidence and Recommendations for Image Acquisition, Analysis, and Reporting, Among Individuals With Neurological Impairment.

In 2015, the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) position statement regarding peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) did not recommend routine use of pQCT, in clinical settings until consistency in image acquisition and analysis protocols are reached, normative studies conducted, and treatment thresholds identified. To date, the lack of consensus-derived recommendations regarding pQCT implementation remains a barrier to implementation of pQCT technology. Thus, based on description of available evidence and literature synthesis, this review recommends the most app

Skeletal outcomes by peripheral quantitative computed tomography and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa.

UNLABELLED: We conducted the first comparison of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) outcomes in adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa. We observed deficits in bone density by both tools. pQCT assessments were associated with many of the same clinical parameters as have been previously established for DXA. INTRODUCTION: Adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) commonly exhibit bone loss, but effects on bone geometry are less clear. We compared measures obtained by DXA and pQCT in girls with AN. METHODS: Seventy females (age 15.5 ± 1.9

Use of India ink during preoperative computed tomography localization of small peripheral undiagnosed pulmonary nodules for thoracoscopic resection.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) scans of the chest permit us to identify a large number of small peripheral, undefined pulmonary lesions that require a diagnosis. Broncoscopy results are generally negative in these cases, and needle aspiration results are often inconclusive owing to poor cytology and false-negative cases. Thoracoscopy is an ideal tool but allows us only to localize lesions that retract the visceral pleura. Our aim in this study was to establish a marking procedure for excising nodules of unknown etiology by injecting India ink on the surface of the lung. METHODS: Since J

Impact of denosumab on bone high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography in hemodialysis patients: a retrospective longitudinal observational study.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Denosumab increases bone mineral density (BMD) in dialysis patients, but the effects on bone microarchitecture using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HRpQCT) and the response factors to treatment are unknown. METHODS: We analyzed, at a single center between 2014 and 2024, 19 consecutive patients on hemodialysis having a longitudinal HRpQCT monitoring at the distal tibia and radius. After excluding the presence of osteomalacia based on bone biopsies and ensuring well-controlled parathyroid hormone levels, nine patients with recent fracture

Efficacy and Safety of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography-Derived Augmented Fluoroscopy Combined with Endobronchial Ultrasound in Peripheral Pulmonary Lesions.

BACKGROUND: The diagnostic yield of peripheral pulmonary lesions (PPLs) using radial endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) remains challenging without navigation systems. Cone-beam computed tomography-derived augmented fluoroscopy (CBCT-AF) represents a recently developed technique, and its clinical utility remains to be investigated. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic yield of transbronchial biopsy (TBB) using a combination of CBCT-AF and radial EBUS. METHODS: We recruited consecutive patients with PPLs who underwent radial EBUS-guided TBB, with or without AF, bet

Computed Tomography Bronchus Sign and the Diagnostic Yield of Guided Bronchoscopy for Peripheral Pulmonary Lesions. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

RATIONALE: Indeterminate peripheral pulmonary lesions (PPLs) often require tissue diagnosis. If nonsurgical biopsy techniques are considered, deciding between bronchoscopic transbronchial versus computed tomography-guided transthoracic biopsy can be difficult. The former has a low diagnostic yield with a low complication risk, whereas the latter has a better diagnostic yield but a higher complication rate. Investigators have looked at various lesion characteristics that can predict the diagnostic yield of guided bronchoscopic biopsies. Although consensus exists that larger size and proximity t

Digital Subtraction Angiography or Computed Tomography Angiography in the Preoperative Evaluation of Lower Limb Peripheral Artery Disease - A Comparative Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: For several years, digital subtraction angiography (DSA) was considered the gold standard method for the evaluation of PAD patients. This is an invasive technique and allows a good evaluation of collaterals and the vessel lumen, even in cases with associated calcification. Nevertheless, recent technical development of computed tomography angiography (CTA) has improved its specificity and sensibility, besides the fact that CTA is a fast and non-invasive procedure. OBJECTIVE: To characterize a cohort of lower limb PAD patients and clarify if there are differences among the patient

Localization of Peripheral Pulmonary Lesions Using a Method of Computed Tomography-Anatomic Correlation and Radial Probe Endobronchial Ultrasound Confirmation.

RATIONALE: Peripheral pulmonary lesions requiring a diagnosis continue to present challenges to clinicians. One significant barrier is the inability to reliably locate peripheral lesions by bronchoscopic approaches. Multiplanar computed tomographic (CT) scan reconstruction is available to most physicians and provides axial, coronal, and sagittal images that may be used to estimate target lesion location and guide bronchoscopists during procedures. OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to evaluate a systematic method of CT-anatomic correlation based on multiplanar reconstruction CT scanning wit

Are patterns of bone loss in anorexic and postmenopausal women similar? Preliminary results using high resolution peripheral computed tomography.

This study intended to compare bone density and architecture in three groups of women: young women with anorexia nervosa (AN), an age-matched control group of young women, and healthy late postmenopausal women. Three-dimensional peripheral quantitative high resolution computed-tomography (HR-pQCT) at the ultradistal radius, a technology providing measures of cortical and trabecular bone density and microarchitecture, was performed in the three cohorts. Thirty-six women with AN aged 18-30 years (mean duration of AN: 5.8 years), 83 healthy late postmenopausal women aged 70-81 as well as 30 age-m

Quantification of bone mineral density precision according to repositioning errors in peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) at the radius and tibia.

Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) is increasingly being used to measure bone mineral density (BMD) in both research and clinical practice to monitor BMD changes. Repeated measurements in long-term follow-up study are an appropriate method to study the pattern of bone loss and the diagnostic value critically depends upon the precision (reproducibility). Positioning is one of the sources of imprecision. In this study, BMD at the locations around 4% length of the tibia and radius were measured by pQCT. The relationship between the change of BMD and the change of total cross-secti

Estimation of bone mineral density and architectural parameters of the distal radius in hemodialysis patients using peripheral quantitative computed tomography.

We analyzed bone changes in a series of hemodialysis patients followed up for a maximum of 299 months by assessing bone mineral density (BMD) and architectural parameters of the distal radius using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT), and determined the predictors of skeletal changes in these patients. No significant differences in trabecular BMD (BMD(T)) were found compared with BMD(T) of the normal control. In contrast, cortical BMD (BMD(C)) was significantly decreased compared with BMD(C) of the normal controls. Hemodialysis patients had significantly lower values for cortica
