Feasibility of using computer simulation to predict the postoperative outcome of the minimally invasive Nuss procedure: Simulation prediction vs. postoperative clinical observation.

The Nuss procedure is the most minimally invasive and commonly used surgical correction for pectus excavatum (PE) by using a prebent pectus bar to elevate the deformed chest wall. However, there are some complications associated with this procedure such as postoperative pain as well as surgical uncertainties because of human judgment. It is therefore important to understand the biomechanical effect of the pectus bar on PE thoraces undergoing an operation to alleviate the postoperative pain as well as to improve surgical outcome. The current study incorporated the finite element method (FEM) to

Can Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing Integrating with/without Biomechanical Simulation Improve the Effectiveness of Spinal Braces on Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis?

The CAD/CAM technology has been increasingly popular in manufacturing spinal braces for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) in clinics. However, whether the CAD/CAM-manufactured braces or the CAD/CAM-manufactured braces integrating with biomechanical simulation could improve the in-brace correction angle of spinal braces in AIS patients, compared to the manually manufactured braces, has remained unclear. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the in-brace correction angle of (1) computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM)-man

Computer Simulations of Responsive Nanogels at Lipid Membrane.

The swelling and collapse of responsive nanogels on a planar lipid bilayer are studied by means of mesoscopic computer simulations. The effects of molecular weight, cross-linking density, and adhesion strength are examined. The conditions for collapse-mediated engulfing by the bilayer are found. In particular, the results show that at low hydrophobicity level the increase in the nanogel softness decreases the engulfing rate. On the contrary, for stronger hydrophobicity level the trend changes to the opposite one. At the same time, when the cross-linking density is too low or the adhesion stren

Computational modeling and simulation of genital tubercle development.

Hypospadias is a developmental defect of urethral tube closure that has a complex etiology involving genetic and environmental factors, including anti-androgenic and estrogenic disrupting chemicals; however, little is known about the morphoregulatory consequences of androgen/estrogen balance during genital tubercle (GT) development. Computer models that predictively model sexual dimorphism of the GT may provide a useful resource to translate chemical-target bipartite networks and their developmental consequences across the human-relevant chemical universe. Here, we describe a multicellular age

Computer simulations of steady concentration peritoneal dialysis.

BACKGROUND: Steady concentration peritoneal dialysis (SCPD), which maintains transperitoneal osmotic gradient by infusing 50% glucose solution throughout the dwell time, has been proposed as a potent treatment for peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients with fluid overload. However, SCPD has yet to be explored theoretically. Here, we investigated SCPD via computer simulations. METHODS: A model was developed by adding the variables for infusing 50% glucose solution to a traditional three-pore model for continuous ambulatory PD. The simulated scenarios involved the instillation of 2-L dialysate, 1.36

The incompressibility assumption in computational simulations of nasal airflow.

Most of the computational works on nasal airflow up to date have assumed incompressibility, given the low Mach number of these flows. However, for high temperature gradients, the incompressibility assumption could lead to a loss of accuracy, due to the temperature dependence of air density and viscosity. In this article we aim to shed some light on the influence of this assumption in a model of calm breathing in an Asian nasal cavity, by solving the fluid flow equations in compressible and incompressible formulation for different ambient air temperatures using the OpenFOAM package. At low flow

Radiation exposure of interventional cardiologists during coronary angiography: evaluation by phantom measurement and computer simulation.

During interventional cardiological procedures, operators are exposed to patients' scatter radiation. Therefore, we measured the radiation exposure of the operator's eyeball, thyroid, and chest wall during angiography. We used the optically stimulated luminescence dosimeter in the anthropomorphic phantom and developed Monte Carlo simulations using the Korean human voxel phantom. At 15 frames/s, the radiation dose of the operator's right eyeball (RE), left eyeball (LE), thyroid (T), and chest wall (CW) at the femoral artery puncture position (FAPP) with protective equipment (PE) was 0.015, 0.16

Atomistic organization and characterization of tube-like assemblies comprising peptide-polymer conjugates: computer simulation studies.

The structure and stability of the nanotube obtained by assembling peptide-polymer conjugates consisting of two poly(n-butyl acrylate) blocks coupled to the cyclic (D-alt-L)-octapeptide cyc[(L-Gln-D-Ala-L-Lys-D-Ala)2], have been investigated at the molecular level using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The effect of the wrapping polymer shells in the tube-like core, which consists of stacked beta-sheet cyclopeptides, has been examined by simulating assemblies of both unsubstituted cyclopeptides, and conjugates in chloroform and N,N-dimethylformamide solutions. Furthermore, the influen

A computer simulation model for Doppler ultrasound signals from pulsatile blood flow in stenosed vessels.

A computer simulation model based on an analytic flow velocity distribution is proposed to generate Doppler ultrasound signals from pulsatile blood flow in the vessels with various stenosis degrees. The model takes into account the velocity field from pulsatile blood flow in the stenosed vessels, sample volume shape and acoustic factors that affect the Doppler signals. By analytically solving the Navier-Stokes equations, the velocity distributions of pulsatile blood flow in the vessels with various stenosis degrees are firstly calculated according to the velocity at the axis of the circular tu

Dynamic high-resolution computer simulation of electrophoretic enantiomer separations with neutral cyclodextrins as chiral selectors.

GENTRANS, a comprehensive one-dimensional dynamic simulator for electrophoretic separations and transport, was extended for handling electrokinetic chiral separations with a neutral ligand. The code can be employed to study the 1:1 interaction of monovalent weak and strong acids and bases with a single monovalent weak or strong acid or base additive, including a neutral cyclodextrin, under real experimental conditions. It is a tool to investigate the dynamics of chiral separations and to provide insight into the buffer systems used in chiral capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and chiral isot

Minimally-invasive open reduction of intracapsular condylar fractures with preoperative simulation using computer-aided design.

Reduction of intracapsular condylar fractures is difficult, so we have based our technique on preoperative simulation using computer-aided design (CAD), which has proved useful in other surgical specialties. We have treated 11 patients with intracapsular condylar fractures. Before the operation the procedure was shown on the computer using a three-dimensional simulation system. The relation between the stump and the fragment of the condyle, and assessment of the position and the size of the screw, were made preoperatively to obtain a perfect fit. The displaced fragment was reduced by elevators

Structure of the prion protein and its gene: an analysis using bioinformatics and computer simulation.

Prion protein (PrP) gene encodes cellular PrP (PrPC), a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored cell membrane protein indispensable for infections of prion, which causes Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, and scrapie in sheep. Although PrPC is known to be converted into an abnormal isoform (PrPSc) upon prion infection and play an important role in prion diseases, the mechanisms involved remain unclear, partly due to the insolubility of PrPSc, which prevents experimental biochemical and biophysical analyses. Recently, with improvemen

The dynamics of tetanus epidemiology and control in rural Uttar Pradesh studied through computer simulation.

An epidemiological model is constructed for tetanus. The assumptions as well as the steps involved in the construction of the model, are detailed. The impact of alternate immunisation strategies to control tetanus in rural Uttar Pradesh, is studied using this model. The quantification of the expected decline in incidence and mortality over 30 years, for different control strategies, provides the health planner with valuable information. It is seen that the incidence of tetanus neonatorum and tetanus in adults, as well as deaths due to tetanus, progressively decreases as the level of coverage i
