Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR2019eng
Purpose We empirically assessed the results of computational optimization and prediction in communication interfaces that were designed to allow individuals with severe motor speech disorders to select phonemes and generate speech output. Method Interface layouts were either random or optimized, in which phoneme targets that were likely to be selected together were located in proximity. Target sizes were either static or predictive, such that likely targets were dynamically enlarged following each selection. Communication interfaces were evaluated by 36 users without motor impairments using an

Despite several approaches to realize subject-to-subject transfer of pre-trained classifiers, the full performance of a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) for a novel user can only be reached by presenting the BCI system with data from the novel user. In typical state-of-the-art BCI systems with a supervised classifier, the labeled data is collected during a calibration recording, in which the user is asked to perform a specific task. Based on the known labels of this recording, the BCI's classifier can learn to decode the individual's brain signals. Unfortunately, this calibration recording consu

BACKGROUND: The establishment of a functional information system for human resource for health (HRH) was one of the major challenges for the Tanzanian health sector. In 2008, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare developed the HRH Strategic Plan, in which establishment of computerized information systems were one of the strategic objectives. In response to this objective, the Ministry developed two information systems, namely the Human Resource for Health Information System (HRHIS) and the Training Institution Information System (TIIS), to capture information from both the public and priva

The objective of this review was to evaluate whether systematic visual training leads to (1) a restitution of the visual field (restoration), (2) an increase in the visual search field size or an improvement in scanning strategies (compensation) and (3) a transfer of training-related improvements in activities of daily living such as reading. To retrieve relevant publications, computer-aided searches of databases (Medline, Embase, Cinahl, Cochrane Central Registers of Controlled Trials) and extensive reference tracing and hand searching were performed. Subsequently, all retrieved and blinded s

To maximise insight from today's high throughput microscopy experiments, it is essential for a microscopist to familiarise themselves with the latest analysis software and undertake appropriate training. This can be challenging, however, due to the rapid development of software in the field, which often has complex installation steps and requires computational resources or storage beyond the capacity of personal computers. Cloud platforms running software containers remove these barriers, particularly when the platform is customised to specific end-user needs. We have developed a platform for

A portable electronic nose with database connection for on-line classification of pollutants in water is presented in this paper. It is a hand-held, lightweight and powered instrument with wireless communications capable of standalone operation. A network of similar devices can be configured for distributed measurements. It uses four resistive microsensors and headspace as sampling method for extracting the volatile compounds from glass vials. The measurement and control program has been developed in LabVIEW using the database connection toolkit to send the sensors data to a server for trainin

Background and Objectives: Thyroid nodules are lumps of solid or liquid-filled tumors that form inside the thyroid gland, which can be malignant or benign. Our aim was to test whether the described features of the Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS) could improve radiologists' decision making when integrated into a computer system. In this study, we developed a computer-aided diagnosis system integrated into multiple-instance learning (MIL) that would focus on benign-malignant classification. Data were available from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Materials and Methods:

Poor preparation of nurses, regarding learning disabilities can have devastating consequences. High-profile reports and the Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements led this University to introduce Shareville into the undergraduate and postgraduate nursing curriculum. Shareville is a virtual environment developed at Birmingham City University, in which student nurses learn from realistic, problem-based scenarios featuring people with learning disabilities. Following the implementation of the resource an evaluation of both staff and student experience was undertaken. Students reported that pr

Despite data showing half of active-duty servicewomen use hormonal contraception, its impact on physical performance during military training remains unclear. This study examined differences in general and military-specific physical performance and bone health changes based on hormonal contraceptive use. One hundred eighty-five female Marine Officer Candidates (MOCs) were grouped by self-reported menstrual/hormonal contraceptive status. Questionnaires, countermovement jumps (CMJ), isometric mid-thigh pull, physical fitness tests (PFT), peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (4%, 38%, and

Despite significant investment in High-Performance Computing (HPC) clusters by funding councils, there are still many researchers whose workflows could not benefit from the computation speed that is provided by these clusters. Reducing barriers to entry for these researchers would accelerate their scientific throughput, since they will be able to respond to results in a timely fashion, improving either their protocols or correcting any problems that might have arisen. This improves the quality of science, and therefore the return on investment, in computationally-intensive areas such as Cryoge

PURPOSE: For computer-aided planning of facial bony surgery, the creation of high-resolution 3D-models of the bones by segmenting volume imaging data is a labor-intensive step, especially as metal dental inlays or implants cause severe artifacts that reduce the quality of the computer-tomographic imaging data. This study provides a method to segment accurate, artifact-free 3D surface models of mandibles from CT data using convolutional neural networks.
METHODS: The presented approach cascades two independently trained 3D-U-Nets to perform accurate segmentations of the mandible bone from full

PURPOSE: To develop, test and evaluate affordable haptic technology to provide robotic-assisted repetitive motion fine-motor training.
METHODS: A haptic computer/user interface was modified by adding a pantograph to hold a pen and to increase the haptic workspace. Custom software moves a pen attached to the device through prescribed three-dimensional (3D) stroke sequences to create two-dimensional glyphs. The pen's position is recorded in 3D coordinates at 1 kHz. Twenty-one healthy child volunteers were taught a standard handwriting curriculum in a group setting, two times per week for 45-60

Brain-computer interface (BCI) systems are commonly classified as reactive or active. Reactive BCIs rely on responses to external stimuli, simplifying decoding but limiting direct user control. In contrast, active BCIs enable intuitive control through spontaneous mental activity but impose greater signal-processing challenges. Speech BCIs, a subset of active systems, hold promise for individuals with severe neurological impairments such as locked-in syndrome (LIS), potentially enabling communication through imagined speech. However, their adoption is hindered by the demanding pre-training requ

This paper describes in detail the design of the specialized text predictor for patients with Huntington's disease. The main aim of the specialized text predictor is to improve the text input rate by limiting the phrases that the user can type in. We show that such specialized predictor can significantly improve text input rate compared to a standard general purpose text predictor. Specialized text predictor, however, makes it more difficult for the user to express his own ideas. We further improved the text predictor by using the sematic database to extract synonym, hypernym, and hyponym term

In this work, we present the overground prototype gait-rehabilitation robot for using motion assistance and training for paralyzed patients. In contrast to the existing gait-rehabilitation robots, which focus on the sagittal plane motion of the hip and knee, we aim to develop a mobile-based pelvic support gait-rehabilitation system that includes a pelvic obliquity support mechanism and a lower-limb exoskeleton. To achieve this, a scissor mechanism is proposed to generate the paralyzed patient's pelvic obliquity motion and weight support. Moreover, the lower limb exoskeleton robot is integrated

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Augmented reality (AR) can help to overcome current limitations in computer assisted head and neck surgery by granting "X-ray vision" to physicians. Still, the acceptance of AR in clinical applications is limited by technical and clinical challenges. We aim to demonstrate the benefit of a marker-free, instant calibration AR system for head and neck cancer imaging, which we hypothesize to be acceptable and practical for clinical use.
METHODS: We implemented a novel AR system for visualization of medical image data registered with the head or face of the patient prior
