Hematocolpos, characterized by the accumulation of menstrual blood in the vagina, is a rare condition often misdiagnosed due to its uncommon occurrence and non-specific symptoms. Main causes include imperforate hymen, obstructed hemivagina with ipsilateral renal anomaly (OHVIRA), congenital lower vaginal atresia, and complete transverse vaginal septum. Without early diagnosis and treatment, complications such as tubal adhesion, pelvic endometriosis, and infertility can occur. This article reviews the differential diagnosis and treatment of hematocolpos.

INTRODUCTION: The structures of the skull and the brain are related to each other. Airway abnormalities are important but sometimes overlooked problems in children with congenital heart disease. It is often difficult to separate symptoms related to cardiac disease from those associated with airway or lung disease. Some of the lesions are incidental while others cause significant symptoms and are important in overall functional outcome. Congenital and acquired as well as intrinsic and extrinsic lesions occur and can overlap. We review and illustrate these lesions here. Many surgical techniques have been described either to repair and to replace the aortic valve. Many of the developmental mechanisms and molecular pathways that underlie fundamental features of body patterning are shared by all vertebrates, and some have even been conserved across evolution from invertebrates to vertebrates. Defects in such processes are a common cause of congenital malformation syndromes, and rapid progress is being made in elucidating their embryological and genetic basis. To determine the outcome of congenital lung abnormalities, data were collected retrospectively between January 1991 and December 1996 on any foetus found to have a lung lesion on antenatal ultrasound. Congenital abnormalities of the anterior urethra other than hypospadias (valve, diverticulum, and megalourethra) are rare conditions and can be difficult to diagnose. Based on five recent cases of these urethral abnormalities, we review the embryology and the English literature, and have found reports of about 100 cases of valve and diverticulum and 50 cases of megalourethra. For all these abnormalities, the clinical presentation depends on age and the diagnosis depends essentially on voiding cystourethrography, which must show the entire urethra, and careful urethroscopic examination.

A 15 month survey of ovine reproductive tracts was undertaken in slaughterhouses in southwest England. A total of 33506 tracts were examined; 23536 from lambs and 9970 from adults. An orthopedic and radiologic follow-up study was performed on 45 patients who had undergone surgery for a benign congenital sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT). Eighty percent of the patients had one to three vertebral abnormalities at the mean age of 21 years.
