Human West Nile virus surveillance--Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York, 2000.

West Nile virus (WNV), a mosquitoborne arbovirus identified in New York in 1999, has become enzootic in the northeastern United States, affecting humans, birds, horses, and other mammals. Although no human WNV infection was identified in Connecticut or New Jersey in 1999, 62 persons with WNV illness, including seven deaths, were detected in New York City (NYC) and nearby New York counties. In 2000, these jurisdictions implemented active surveillance (AS) and enhanced passive surveillance (EPS) to detect human illness; 21 persons were identified with acute WNV infection (14 in New York, six in

Serosurveys for West Nile virus infection--New York and Connecticut counties, 2000.

In 2000, 21 persons were reported with acute illness attributed to West Nile virus (WNV) infection; 19 were hospitalized with encephalitis or meningitis. Of the 21, 10 resided in the Staten Island borough (Richmond County) of New York City. Other ill persons resided in nine other counties--Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), and Queens counties in New York; Hudson, Passaic, Monmouth, Morris, and Bergen counties in New Jersey; and Fairfield County in Connecticut. Because ill persons represent only a fraction of the persons who are infected, many more persons probably were infected in 2000.

Recommendations: HIV/HBV infected health care workers. Connecticut Department of Health Services.

These recommendations have been developed in response to a congressional mandate and to public concern about transmission of HIV from health care workers to patients. Hepatitis B is also addressed in the recommendations. Both viruses are transmitted through blood-to-blood contact. The likelihood of transmission of HBV is very low, for HIV extraordinarily remote. The following are action steps to reduce this risk further: 1. The commissioner charges the professional associations and institutions to develop plans to educate their members, nonmembers, and employees on universal precautions, proce

Associations Between Gestational Residential Radon Exposure and Term Low Birthweight in Connecticut, USA.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest biologic mechanisms for gestational exposure to radiation and impaired fetal development. We explored associations between gestational radon exposure and term low birthweight, for which evidence is limited. METHODS: We examined data for 68,159 singleton full-term births in Connecticut, United States, 2016-2018. Using a radon spatiotemporal model, we estimated ZIP code-level basement and ground-level exposures during pregnancy and trimesters for each participant's address at birth or delivery. We used logistic regression models, including confounders, to estimate od

Barriers to the Uptake of Tickborne Disease Prevention Measures: Connecticut, Maryland 2016-2017.

CONTEXT: Public health programs promote numerous tickborne disease (TBD) prevention measures. However, measures are not frequently or consistently performed. OBJECTIVE: Describe barriers to consistent use of 4 commonly promoted TBD prevention measures. DESIGN: We conducted an online survey (n = 1883) evaluating behaviors regarding TBD prevention measures including conducting tick checks, applying insect repellents, showering/bathing, and applying chemical or natural pesticides to residential yards. Respondents could select reasons for never, rarely, or sometimes performing these measures. De

Accidental drug overdose deaths in Connecticut, 2012-2018: The rise of polysubstance detection?

OBJECTIVES: To examine trends in polysubstance detection associated with drug-related overdose deaths in Connecticut. METHODS: We used 2012-2018 data provided by Connecticut's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) on accidental overdose deaths. We estimated annual trends, standardizing the number of deaths per 100,000 Connecticut residents each year. We then conducted stratified analyses by polysubstance use status. We also examined the numbers of deaths involving fentanyl in a separate analysis. We obtained data in April 2019, and statistical analyses were performed from April to Septe

Prevalence and genetic characterization of Powassan virus strains infecting Ixodes scapularis in Connecticut.

A total of 30 Powassan virus (POWV) isolates from Ixodes scapularis collected from Bridgeport and North Branford, CT in 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012 and one earlier isolate from Ixodes cookei collected in Old Lyme, CT in 1978 were characterized by phylogenetic analysis of their envelope gene sequences. Powassan virus sequences segregated into two major groups termed the deer tick virus (DTV) and Powassan (POW) lineages. The lineage from I. cookei was POW. The remaining viruses from I. scapularis grouped with the DTV lineage. Powassan viruses from Bridgeport were nearly identical and clustered wi

Effect of surveillance method on reported characteristics of Lyme disease, Connecticut, 1996-2007.

To determine the effect of changing public health surveillance methods on the reported epidemiology of Lyme disease, we analyzed Connecticut data for 1996-2007. Data were stratified by 4 surveillance methods and compared. A total of 87,174 reports were received that included 79,896 potential cases. Variations based on surveillance methods were seen. Cases reported through physician-based surveillance were significantly more likely to be classified as confirmed; such case-patients were significantly more likely to have symptoms of erythema migrans only and to have illness onset during summer mo

Aseptic meningitis outbreak associated with echovirus 9 among recreational vehicle campers--Connecticut, 2003.

Aseptic meningitis is an inflammation of the tissues covering the brain and spinal cord and caused by a virus, most frequently an enterovirus. In August 2003, the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CDPH) received a report of three viral meningitis cases among recreational vehicle (RV) campers staying at a campground in northeastern Connecticut. CDPH, assisted by CDC, conducted an investigation, which 1) identified a total of 12 cases of aseptic meningitis and 24 cases of enterovirus-like illness among 201 campers interviewed, 2) demonstrated how transmission of enterovirus from persons w

Serogroup Y meningococcal disease--Illinois, Connecticut, and selected areas, United States, 1989-1996.

Neisseria meningitidis is a leading cause of bacterial meningitis and sepsis in the United States. N. meningitidis is classified into serogroups based on the antigenic characteristics of its capsular polysaccharide. During 1989-1991 in the United States, serogroups B and C accounted for most (91%) of invasive meningococcal disease while serogroup Y caused < 5%; however, during 1992-1995, serogroup Y accounted for an increasing proportion of meningococcal disease. This report describes the epidemiology of serogroup Y meningococcal disease (SYMD) during 1991-1996 in Illinois and Connecticut, whi

Host associations of mosquitoes at eastern equine encephalitis virus foci in Connecticut, USA.

BACKGROUND: Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) is a highly pathogenic mosquito-borne arbovirus, with active transmission foci in freshwater hardwood swamps in eastern North America, where enzootic transmission is maintained between the ornithophilic mosquito, Culiseta melanura, and wild passerine birds. The role of other locally abundant mosquito species in virus transmission and their associations with vertebrate hosts as sources of blood meals within these foci are largely unknown but are of importance in clarifying the dynamics of enzootic and epidemic/epizootic transmission. Real world performance of screening breast ultrasound following enactment of Connecticut Bill 458.

The purpose of this article was to retrospectively evaluate the benefits of screening breast ultrasound in women with dense breast tissue following enactment of Connecticut Bill 458 in October 2009. This bill mandated that women be informed of their breast density and the possible benefit of ultrasound as an additional screening modality. Institutional approval was obtained from the institutional review board for this retrospective study. A total of 5519 women with dense breasts were screened with ultrasound in the year after the law went into effect from October 2009 to September 2010 (post l

Trends in invasive infection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Connecticut, USA, 2001-2010.

We examined trends in incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections in Connecticut, with emphasis on 2007-2010, after legislation required reporting of hospital infections. A case was defined as isolation of MRSA from normally sterile body sites, classified after medical record review as hospital onset (HO), community onset, health care-associated community onset (HACO), or community-associated (CA). Blood isolates collected during 2005-2010 were typed and categorized as community- or health care-related strains. During 2001-2010, a total of 8,758 cases were report

Practices and policies of providers testing school-aged children for tuberculosis, Connecticut, 2008.

This study identified current practices and policies related to testing school children for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in Connecticut. A cross-sectional survey was mailed to a random sample of community pediatricians and family practitioners in Connecticut who provide health care services to children aged 4-18 years. The main outcome measure was adherence to national guidelines for tuberculosis (TB) testing of school-aged children. The response rate was 66.3% (345 of 520), 258 of whom provided services to children. Responses showed that 60% (152 of 252) of replying providers read the

Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding Lyme disease prevention among Connecticut residents, 1999-2004.

Lyme disease, caused by the tick-transmitted bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. We surveyed residents of three Connecticut health districts to evaluate the impact of intensive community-wide education programs on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors to prevent Lyme disease. Overall, 84% of respondents reported that they knew a lot or some about Lyme disease, and 56% felt that they were very or somewhat likely to get Lyme disease in the coming year. During 2002-2004, the percentage of respondents who reported always performing tick check

Increasing incidence of cecal and sigmoid carcinoma. Data from the Connecticut Tumor Registry.

We have studied both the distribution and incidence of colorectal cancer using The Connecticut Tumor Registry, the oldest tumor registry in the United States. During the time period 1973 to 1985, left-sided colon cancers accounted for 63% of the cancers, right-sided cancers 33%, and cancers with unspecified sites 4%. Indeed, this pattern of distribution has remained constant for 25 years. For the period 1935 to 1985, we calculated the sex-specific, age-adjusted (normalized to the 1970 U.S. Census) incidence. Age-adjusted incidence of rectal cancer has remained stable for 50 years: for men, 22.
