There are a number of features which are common to such variable conditions as juvenile fibromatosis on the one hand and torticollis and congenital dislocation of the hip, and possibly scoliosis, on the other. Various pathological syndromes are presented, all of them characterized by disturbance and contracture of connective tissue. Surgery is carried out in severe cases when it is a practicable proposition. The administration of an enzyme inhibitor at cellular level has introduced a new dimension in the management of localized fibromatosis.

Interstitial Lung Disease associated with Connective Tissue Diseases Abstract: Interstitial lung diseases (ILD) are in up to one-third of cases associated with connective tissue diseases (CTD). In systemic sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyositis/dermatomyositis, Sjögren's syndrome, and mixed connective tissue disease, an associated ILD significantly increases morbidity and mortality. The diagnostic workup for suspected CTD-ILD includes a range of functional, radiological, laboratory, and, if necessary, invasive tests. A thorough medical history and physical examination with targeted rheu

BACKGROUND: The clinical features of asthma with connective tissue diseases (CTDs) are not well-known. This study therefore aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of asthma with CTDs.
METHODS: We retrospectively examined the records of adults (≥18 years old) with asthma followed up between January 2010 and December 2019. We then compared the clinical features of asthma with and without CTDs.
RESULTS: Among 568 subjects with asthma, 42 subjects (7.4%) had CTDs. The most frequent concomitant CTD was rheumatoid arthritis (n = 23, 54.8%), followed by systemic lupus erythematosus (n =

Connective tissue diseases (CTDs) consist of an extensive range of heterogeneous medical conditions, which are caused by immune-mediated chronic inflammation and influences the various connective tissues of the body. They include rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, vasculitis, Sjögren's syndrome, Behcet's disease, and many other autoimmune CTDs. To date, several anti-inflammatory approaches have been developed to reduce the severity of inflammation or its subsequent organ manifestations. As a logical mechanism to harnesses the undesired inflammation, some st

Pulmonary manifestations of connective tissue diseases (CTD) carry high morbidity and potential mortality, and the most serious pulmonary type is interstitial lung disease (ILD). Identifying and promptly intervening CTD-ILD with immune suppressor therapy will change the natural course of the disease resulting in survival improvement. Compared to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, the most common presentation of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP), CTD-ILD carries a better prognosis due to the response to immune suppressor therapy. Nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) is the most common ty

Connective tissue diseases (CTDs) encompass a broad spectrum of clinical presentations that involve multidisciplinary management. Cutaneous findings are common in CTD and careful examination of these features aids in appropriate diagnosis and subsequent evaluation. Thorough work-up of CTD is crucial to properly identify disease subtypes and systemic involvement. Management plans can be developed based on diagnosis and systemic manifestations of disease. Disease management often requires treatment with pharmacotherapies with potential for toxicities, further underscoring the importance of diagn

Targeted therapies are nowadays commonly used in connective tissue diseases and vasculitis. Experts recommend the use of belimumab and rituximab in refractory and/or severe cases of lupus. Rituximab can be also considered in difficult to treat cases of Sjögren's disease or myositis. Nintedanib seems a very promising weapon in the management of systemic sclerosis-associated pulmonary fibrosis. Regarding vasculitis, rituximab has become the preferred treatment for granulomatosis with polyangiitis and microscopic polyangiitis. Finally, tocilizumab is recommended as a steroid-sparing agent in gian

Biologic therapy continues to revolutionize the treatment of autoimmune disease, especially in rheumatology as the pathophysiology of both inflammation and autoimmune disease becomes better understood. These therapies are designed to dampen the response of the inflammatory cascades. Although the first biologic therapies were approved many years ago, expanding indications and new agents continue to challenge the traditional treatment strategies for rheumatic diseases. This article reviews the data supporting the current use of biologic therapies, including off-label indications, in a subset of

Lupus can present itself in a multitude of clinical and histopathological manifestations. Cutaneous lesions can be very variable either from the clinical point of view or at the microscopic scale. Signs can be specific, concerning the dermo-epidermal stage, the dermal stage or the hypodermal stage. Conversely, some manifestations can be not specific but associated to the lupus. Finally, the question of the differential diagnosis can be tricky and often requires a beam of clinical, biological and histopathological arguments.

Patients with connective tissue diseases are thought to be at a higher risk for a number of cerebrovascular diseases such as intracranial aneurysms, dissections, and acute ischemic strokes. In this report, we aim to understand the prevalence and occurrences of such neurovascular manifestations in four heritable connective tissue disorders: Marfan syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Neurofibromatosis Type 1, and Loeys-Dietz syndrome. We discuss the fact that although there are various case studies reporting neurovascular findings in these connective tissue diseases, there is a general lack of cas

Cutaneous malignancies have been significantly associated with autoimmune connective tissue diseases (ACTDs). This review focuses on the current state of knowledge on skin cancer risk in the most prevalent ACTDs in dermatology including lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, dermatomyositis and Sjögren syndrome. Potential pathogenetic mechanisms for the association between ACTDs and malignancy involve disease-related impairment of immune system, sustained cutaneous inflammation, drug-associated immune suppression and increased susceptibility to acquired viral infections. An additional causal role m

UNLABELLED: The term overlap syndromes (OS) is used to define a group of disorders characterized by the presence, in the same patient, of clinical features typical for more than one definite connective tissue disease (CTD).
OBJECTIVE: To show that patients may not only have an overlap of two or more CTDs but may also change their disease phenotype from that of a definite CTD to another.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of medical records of four patients with a disease duration of about thirty years and a transition from a well definite CTD into another.
RESULTS: The first patie

In recent years, major advances have been achieved in the understanding of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) patho-physiology. Associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (APAH) can occur in a variety of other conditions and circumstances including a number of systemic autoimmune diseases. As with PAH in general, clinical symptoms of APAH in systemic autoimmune diseases are unspecific. In addition, there is a long standing association between autoimmunity and APAH. It has been postulated that autoimmunity may play a role in the pathogenesis of APAH. This argument has been based on frequent

Connective tissue diseases and systemic vasculitides are commonly associated with ocular manifestations, which can lead to severe complications and even blindness. The present review article describes these ocular manifestations, their signs and symptoms and possible treatment options for Sjoegren's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antiphospholipid syndrome (APLS), as well as those of giant cell arteritis/cranial arteritis, ANCA-associated vasculitides and Behçet's disease. Additionally, possible ocular adverse effects of antimalarial agents are described.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is an important complication of connective tissue diseases (CTD) and especially seen in systemic sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE), and mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD). In systemic sclerosis, PAH is isolated or accompanied by interstitial lung disease and currently, a major cause of mortality. It has been shown to be developed in approximately 10% of cases and annual screening with echocardiography has been recommended. Right heart catheterization is required for definite diagnosis. Limited skin involvement, late onset, Raynaud's phenome

Connective tissue diseases (CTDs) are a group of clinical disorders that have an underlying autoimmune pathogenesis. These include a diverse set of diseases such as relapsing polychondritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and eosinophilic fasciitis, along with more common entities like Sjogren's syndrome, dermatomyositis, scleroderma, and lupus erythematosus. The latter three will be the focus of this review, as they constitute the most significant and common CTD with cutaneous manifestations. The cutaneous signs often represent the preliminary stages of disease and the presenting clinical symptoms. Th

The study of microflora of skin, mucous tunic of nose and mouth, and the quantitative and qualitative structure of the intestinal and urinal microflora in cases of systemic connective tissues diseases, are reproduced. The decrease of the dominant state of typical representatives, and the increase of the role of pseudopathogenic bacteria in various biotypes, were observed. The frequency of S. aureus detection increased in skin, mucous tunic of nose and mouth. Pseudopathogenic microbes acquired greater significance in the forming of microbiocenosis of intestine, while the number of E. coli, Bifi
