Quality of Informed Consent Practices around the Time of Childbirth: A Cross-Sectional Study in Italy.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored consent request practices during childbirth. OBJECTIVE: We explored consent request practices during childbirth in a referral hospital and research centre in Italy, capturing both women and health workers' perspectives. METHODS: Data were collected using self-administrated questionnaires between December 2016 and September 2018. Nine key maternal and newborn procedures were analysed. Associations between consent requests and women characteristics were explored by multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: Among 1244 women, the rate of consent requests varie

Relational consent as protection and empowerment: An ethical framework for mothers and youth in IPV.

BACKGROUND: In counseling practice, including work with mothers and children exposed to intimate partner violence (CEIPV), consent processes are sometimes operationalized primarily through forms and signatures. When consent is handled in this way, counseling interactions may inadvertently reflect relational patterns linked to abuse, especially if the impacts of trauma, coercion, and mistrust are not addressed with active support for choice, pacing, and comprehension. OBJECTIVE: This article presents relational consent as a trauma-informed, ethically grounded framework that views consent as an

Ethical and Linguistic Quality of Participant Information Sheets and Their Association with Recruitment Outcomes : An Empirical Bioethics Study of Clinical Trials.

Informed consent protects autonomy in clinical research, and it is often assumed that clearer Participant Information Sheets and Informed Consent Forms may also improve recruitment. This study examined whether the ethical and linguistic qualities of these documents are associated with accrual-related outcomes in industry-sponsored interventional trials. We conducted a retrospective analysis of ClinicalTrials.gov records with readable consent materials, operationalizing ethical clarity, linguistic comprehensibility, and cognitive burden using large language model-based extraction and quantitati

Electronic versus paper surgical consent in NHS plastic surgery: A prospective evaluation of the Concentric platform at a tertiary centre.

BACKGROUND: The Montgomery ruling mandates patient-specific disclosure of material risks in surgical consent, yet paper-based documentation remains common and is prone to omission and inefficiency. Electronic consent (eConsent) platforms may address these limitations, but their real-world impact in UK surgical practice remains understudied. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted in two NHS plastic surgery clinics from November 2024 to June 2025. Patients aged ≥16 years undergoing minor procedures were recruited as they attended clinic. Consent was obtained using paper forms

[Patient information, informed consent, and alternative examination and treatment methods in radiology].

IMPORTANCE OF INFORMED CONSENT: Informed consent and the patient's declaration of consent are of central importance in any medical treatment. They serve to protect the patient's right to self-determination. Properly provided informed consent is a prerequisite for the validity of the patient's consent; without it, a medical procedure is unlawful and may give rise to liability for damages. SCOPE OF INFORMED CONSENT: Pursuant to section 630e(1) of the German Civil Code (BGB), the treating physician is obligated to inform the patient of all circumstances essential to consent, in particular regard

The informed consent in Southern Italy does not adequately inform parents about infant vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination centres in the Campania Region, southern Italy, vaccinate children with a hexavalent vaccine that contains the mandatory vaccines diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, and viral Hepatitis B. This vaccine also includes two non-mandatory vaccines, pertussis and Haemophilus influenzae type B. Information about these optional vaccines should be communicated to the parents, and informed consent should be obtained from parents before vaccination. We explored whether informed consent was delivered to the parents, whether they signed the consent form, and whether they read and ac

Improving consent in patients undergoing surgery for fractured neck of femur.

Background Neck of femur fractures and their subsequent operative fixation are associated with high rates of perioperative morbidity and mortality. Consenting in this setting is suboptimal with the Montgomery court ruling changing the perspective of consent. This quality improvement project assessed the adequacy of consenting against British Orthopaedic Association-endorsed guidance and implemented a series of changes to improve the documentation of risks associated with surgery for fractured neck of femur. Methods Seventy consecutive patients who underwent any operative fixation of a neck of

[Legal framework relating to human tissues used for research ends].

Development in cell and tissue engineering needs human tissue samples. If French jurisdiction concerning the human tissue sample collected in a therapeutic goal is well established, the French and European legal context concerning the scientific research is not clear and controversial. In our lab, we aim to conjugate the professional and the moral duty and to impose on our researchers the respect of strictly defined procedures. In order to organize the management of these biological resources, we chose not only to take into account the present legal context concerning the collection of tissues

"Pre-cebo": an unrecognized issue in the interpretation of adequate relief during irritable bowel syndrome drug trials.

OBJECTIVES: In drug trials involving subjects with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the placebo effect seems to be very important. However, events even before starting the study may also impact patient expectations. In this study, we utilized consent language from prior studies of diarrhea predominant IBS (D-IBS) drug trials to determine whether the knowledge imparted during this process affects the response to different therapies. METHODS: Consecutive IBS subjects who met the Rome III criteria for IBS were enrolled. Patients were presented with a mock trial and randomized to 1 of 3 questionna

Seeking consent for research with indigenous communities: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: When conducting research with Indigenous populations consent should be sought from both individual participants and the local community. We aimed to search and summarise the literature about methods for seeking consent for research with Indigenous populations. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted for articles that describe or evaluate the process of seeking informed consent for research with Indigenous participants. Guidelines for ethical research and for seeking consent with Indigenous people are also included in our review. RESULTS: Of 1447 articles found 1391

Consent for routine neonatal procedures: A study of practices in Irish neonatal units. How do we compare with the gold standard BAPM guidelines?

The Irish National Consent Policy (NCP) proposes that the legal requirement for consent extends to all forms of interventions, investigations and treatment, carried out on or behalf of the Health Service Executive (HSE). This study employs a quantitative descriptive approach to investigate the practices for obtaining consent for an identified group of routine neonatal procedures in neonatal facilities throughout Ireland. The BAPM (British Association of Perinatal Medicine) guidelines were identified as 'gold standard' for the purposes of this study. The results indicated a lack of consistency

Written risk disclosure in elective neurosurgical consent: A retrospective observational study with descriptive postoperative outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Informed consent is a fundamental ethical and legal requirement in neurosurgical practice, particularly given the high risk of postoperative morbidity and medico-legal litigation. Written documentation of material risk disclosure provides objective evidence that valid consent has been obtained. However, real-world data on neurosurgical consent documentation practices remain limited in Malaysia. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary referral center, reviewing elective neurosurgical procedures performed in 2022. Electronic medical records and scann

Saying It, Showing It, and Just Going with It: Examining Individual and Situational Correlates of Sexual Consent Communication Among College Students.

Consent is a critical component of healthy and pleasurable sexual experiences. Individual-level (e.g. gender) and situational-level (e.g. type of sexual behavior, relationship to partner) factors have been associated with sexual consent communication. However, few studies have examined a broad range of personal and situational characteristics within the same models, despite these being potentially important influences on sexual behavior during college. The current study extended prior work by examining multiple correlates of consent communication during individuals' most recent sexual encounte

COVID-19 highlights the policy barriers and complexities of postpartum sterilization.

Multiple barriers exist to sterilization in the postpartum period. One such barrier, the Medicaid Title XIX sterilization policy, requires publicly insured patients to complete a sterilization consent form at least 30 days prior to their scheduled procedure. While this policy was set in place in the 1970s to address the practice of coerced sterilization among marginalized women, it has served as a significant barrier to obtaining the procedure in the contemporary period. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted specific complexities surrounding postpartum sterilization and created additional barr

Practices of Informed Consent for Emergency Procedures at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Lahore, Pakistan.

Background The purpose of obtaining informed consent is to ensure that patients undergoing any medical or surgical intervention are neither deceived nor coerced. Accurately estimating surgical risks is critical for shared decision-making and informed consent. Probable complications and alternative procedures should be presented to the patient so that they can freely choose an operative option. However, this factor is difficult to carry on in emergencies where an urgent decision is required. Objective This study aimed to assess the ongoing clinical practices of informed consent in emergency sur

Written consent for laparoscopic tubal occlusion and medico-legal implications.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the completeness of written consent for laparoscopic tubal occlusion and to consider the medico-legal implications of incomplete written consent. METHODS: A retrospective review was undertaken of the medical records of all women who had laparoscopic tubal occlusion in 2006 in a district general hospital to elicit details of risks of the procedure as recorded on the consent form. The extent of documentation of risks and complications that were cited in the guidelines was analysed. In addition, the grade of doctor and the timing of obtaining written consent were studied.
