Distribution along a stages-of-behavioral-change continuum for condom and contraceptive use among women accessed in different settings. Prevention of HIV in Women and Infants Demonstration Projects.

The numbers of women of childbearing age in the US with HIV and AIDS from heterosexual transmission continues to rise. Behavioral interventions remain the best means of preventing transmission of HIV. Program planners often implement interventions to promote behavioral change in a wide range of settings such as family planning or sexually transmitted disease clinics, drug treatment facilities, or medical facilities that serve high risk and HIV positive women. Women recruited in different types of settings, however, may differ with respect to their experience with, attitudes toward, and willing

Effects of injectable contraception with depot medroxyprogesterone acetate or norethisterone enanthate on estradiol levels and menstrual, psychological and behavioral measures relevant to HIV risk: The WHICH randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Observational data suggest lower HIV risk with norethisterone enanthate (NET-EN) than with depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate intramuscular (DMPA-IM) injectable contraceptives. If confirmed, a switch between these similar injectable methods would be programmatically feasible and could impact the trajectory of the HIV epidemic. We aimed in this paper to investigate the effects of DMPA-IM and NET-EN on estradiol levels, measures of depression and sexual activity and menstrual effects, relevant to HIV risk; and to ascertain whether these measures are associated with estradiol levels. Association of oral contraceptive use with suicidal behavior among representative Korean population: Results from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2016).

INTRODUCTION: The association of suicide with the use of oral contraceptives (OC) is unknown in the Asian population. We aimed to evaluate the association of OC use and suicidal behavior in a nationally representative population of Korean women. METHOD: Of the 44,501 women who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) (2007-2016), 27,067 women aged 20 years or older who had completed information on OC use and suicidal behavior were included. Women with a history of cancer were excluded. Compared to non-users of OC, odds ratios (ORs) for suicide attem

Socio-behavioral factors linked to willingness to use new male contraceptives: A cross-sectional survey of men and female partners across four low- and middle-income countries.

OBJECTIVE: Numerous population-level surveys support willingness to use new male contraceptives (MC) among men and their female partners across a range of cultures and geographies, despite unproven efficacy and uncertain risk. Whether such willingness is related to attitudes about gender equity and/or key reproductive experiences warrants further exploration. We explore socio-behavioral factors linked to variations in willingness to use new MCs in Colombia, Ghana, Morocco, and Togo. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted approximately two thousand surveys examining new MC attitudes with sexually active,

Dual contraceptive method use for pregnancy and disease prevention among HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected women: the importance of an event-level focus for promoting safer sexual behaviors.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Many women who report condom use also use other methods of birth control such as oral contraceptive pills. The use of 2 or more contraceptive methods often results in less consistent condom use. GOAL: This study sought to document the prevalence and patterns of such dual contraceptive use among HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative women, and to assess factors associated with condom-only versus dual contraceptive use. STUDY DESIGN: At 6 months postpartum, 361 sexually active women were interviewed regarding sexual behavior, male condom and other contraceptive use,

[Duration of desire for a child, contraceptive behavior and rate of previous infertility treatment. An epidemiologic study of 750 consecutive patients in labor at the Oldenburg Gynecologic Clinic using a structured interview].

In order to gain current information, on how long a healthy couple desiring a child has to wait until conception, on previous contraceptive behaviour and prior infertility treatment, 750 women were interviewed within 7 days after delivery between January and November, 1989, using a standardised questionnaire. This sample represents one third of all patients, who delivered a child in an Oldenburg hospital during the time period covered. 544 women had desired a pregnancy, an additional 206 women had not directly planned a pregnancy, and 73 of these had taken no precautions against conception, si

Community Perspectives and Behavior Change Strategies for Integrated Long-Acting Reversible Contraception and Long-Acting Injectable Preexposure Prophylaxis Roll Out for Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Uganda (COMPASS): Protocol for a Mixed Methods Implementation Science Study.

BACKGROUND: HIV incidence among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 15-24 years in Eastern and Southern Africa remains unacceptably high. Unprotected sex increases the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies, reflecting an unmet need for effective contraception among AGYW. Long-acting injectable preexposure prophylaxis (LAI-PrEP) and long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) offer effective, durable protection against HIV and unintended pregnancy. However, uptake and persistence remain suboptimal due to low awareness, fear of side effects, st

Use of open-text responses to recode categorical survey data on postpartum contraception use among women in the United States: A mixed-methods inquiry of Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum contraception prevents unintended pregnancies and short interpregnancy intervals. The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) collects population-based data on postpartum contraception nonuse and reasons for not using postpartum contraception. In addition to quantitative questions, PRAMS collects open-text responses that are typically left unused by secondary quantitative analyses. However, abundant preexisting open-text data can serve as a resource for improving quantitative measurement accuracy and qualitatively uncovering unexpected responses. We used PRAM

Contraceptive use. A comparison between ever- and never-pregnant adolescents.

There is controversy about how the experience of a teenage pregnancy affects the contraceptive behavior of adolescent women. Data from 425 sexually active, unmarried teenage women who had access to contraception were used to address this issue. Chi-square tests suggest that ever-pregnant teens are significantly less likely to have used contraception at last intercourse than never-pregnant teens. This finding persists when comparing never-pregnant teens to subgroups of ever-pregnant adolescents whose contraceptive behavior was expected to have been affected positively by their pregnancy. Logist

Psychosocial conventionality, health orientation, and contraceptive use in adolescence.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to determine psychosocial and behavioral factors that are associated with variation in contraceptive use among adolescents. Because regular use of contraception may be seen both as a conventional behavior and as a health-protective behavior, analyses assess the association between psychosocial conventionality and health orientation, on the one hand, and variation in contraceptive use, on the other. METHODS: Analyses are based on an urban sample of 971 white, African-American, and Hispanic male and female sexually active high school students. Study partici

Hormonal contraception and risk of cervical infections among HIV-1-seropositive Kenyan women.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between hormonal contraceptive use and the acquisition of cervical sexually transmitted infections (STI) among HIV-1-infected women. DESIGN: A prospective cohort study of 242 commercial sex workers in Mombasa, Kenya, followed from the time of HIV-1 infection. METHODS: At monthly follow-up visits, sexual behavior and contraceptive use were recorded, and laboratory screening for STI was performed. Multivariate Andersen-Gill proportional hazards models were constructed to examine the association between the use of hormonal contraception and the occurrence

Young unmarried men's understanding of female hormonal contraception.

BACKGROUND: A better understanding of men's attitudes, norms and behaviors regarding women's use of hormonal contraception is needed. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted contraceptive life-history interviews with 41 ethnically diverse males ages 18-25 years which detailed up to six heterosexual relationships, focusing on knowledge, attitudes, norms and behaviors regarding hormonal contraception use, decision making and communication. RESULTS: Men's attitudes, norms and behaviors associated with hormonal contraceptive decisions and use varied greatly across participants and their relationships. Findin

Barriers to pregnancy prevention for adolescents in rural Haiti: perceptions of healthcare providers.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about healthcare providers' (HCPs) contraceptive views for adolescents in Haiti, who experience high rates of unintended pregnancy. We sought to describe HCPs' perspectives on barriers and facilitators to contraceptive care delivery in rural Haiti. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey and qualitative interviews with HCPs in two rural communities in Haiti from 08/2021-03/2022. We assessed demographics, clinical practice behaviors and explored contraception perspectives according to Theory of Planned Behavior constructs: attitudes, subjective norms, and per

Perceived competence and contraceptive use during adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about psychosocial correlates of different contraceptive methods in adolescence. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional analyses of 209 postmenarcheal girls [mean age (years)+/-SD=15.68+/-1.74], primarily Caucasian (62.8%) or African American (32.8%). Competence (activities and social) and rule-breaking behavior were assessed by the Youth Self Report (YSR; adolescent) and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL; parent). Three contraceptive-use groups were created: no hormonal contraceptive (n=142), combined oral contraceptives or the transdermal patch (COCs/patch, n=41), and de

Hormonal emergency contraception: a clinical primer.

Unintended and teenage pregnancies are major public health concerns in the United States. Emergency contraception is used to prevent pregnancy after failure of a contraceptive method or after unprotected intercourse. Expanded use of emergency contraception has the potential to reduce unintended pregnancy and induced abortions, while reducing state and federal healthcare expenditures. The recent approval of Plan B as an over-the-counter medication for individuals over 18 years of age should improve access to this medication. However, there are still widespread misconceptions about the mechanism

Emergency contraception and morality: reflections of health care workers and clients.

In this study, we explore the retrospective reports of 21 US Planned Parenthood clients about their use of emergency contraception pills (ECPs) and the views of ten Planned Parenthood health care workers at two clinics about providing ECPs. We elucidate the sociological phenomena that frame emergency contraception usage: cultural ideology about contraception, sexuality, unintended pregnancy, and abortion. We focus on the ways in which interactions between health care workers and clients both mediate and reinforce such cultural ideology. Our research indicates that the distinctions between fert

'Most women really actually do just appreciate being asked': clinicians' views on integrating sexual wellbeing into contraceptive care.

A growing body of literature suggests that contraceptives' impact on sexual experiences influences willingness to initiate and continue with a method. Little is known, however, about how clinicians engage with clients on this topic during contraceptive consultations. Fifteen clinicians in South Eastern Australia participated in semi-structured interviews between April and June 2019. Interviews were analysed using inductive, semantic thematic analysis. Participants varied in their evaluation and management of contraceptives' sexual side effects and the legitimacy given to women's bodily experie

Contraceptive Attitudes and Beliefs of Women With Sickle Cell Disease: A Qualitative Study.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to qualitatively explore factors influencing contraceptive use in women living with sickle cell disease (SCD). STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a semi-structured qualitative study using data from interviews with reproductive-aged women with SCD. The Theory of Planned Behavior, which describes an individual's attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control as drivers of a health behavior, served as a framework for data collection and thematic analysis. RESULTS: We analyzed interviews from 20 participants. Attitudes toward contraception showed skepticism regarding

Male contraception - Part of gender medicine and reproductive rights of men.

A pregnancy is in general the result of the sexual interaction of two individuals, with either different or same genders (male, female, non-binary etc). Preventing an unwanted pregnancy is therefore basically a "joint preventive behavior", which can be achieved by gender specific behaviors with gender specific methods in a specific sociocultural environment. This sociocultural environment (circumstances) determines the frame of gender specific behaviors (reproductive rights) and the available gender specific contraceptive methods (contraceptive technology). In the sociocultural history of cont
