Carcinoma of the cervix uteri and risk factors.

A prospective study included 210 patients and 100 healthy individuals in whom risk factors for the onset of malignant disorders of the cervix uteri were investigated. The following parameters were analyzed: age, profession, religious affiliation, former pregnancies, chronic irritative process on the cervix uteri, socio-economic status, heredity, contraceptive usage, smoking, sexual life and presence of the human papilloma viruses in the injured and healthy cervix. The results of the research emphasized the relevant risk factors for the genesis of the disease. They are presented in an original

Respondent Demographics and Contraceptive Use Patterns in the United States: A National Survey of Family Growth Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Contraception is an important tool for helping to prevent both unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Medical costs related to STIs are high and impose a large burden on both patients and the healthcare system. In addition, unintended pregnancies account for a large portion of pregnancies in the United States (US) and are associated with adverse maternal and infant health outcomes. Both STIs and unintended pregnancies are continuous public health concerns, and this study aims to identify patterns in contraceptive method use in relation to specific soci

Contraceptive failure in the United States.

This review provides an update of previous estimates of first-year probabilities of contraceptive failure for all methods of contraception available in the United States. Estimates are provided of probabilities of failure during typical use (which includes both incorrect and inconsistent use) and during perfect use (correct and consistent use). The difference between these two probabilities reveals the consequences of imperfect use; it depends both on how unforgiving of imperfect use a method is and on how hard it is to use that method perfectly. These revisions reflect new research on contrac

Pharmacology update in adolescents: contraception and human papillomavirus vaccination.

The ideal contraceptive agent remains elusive for the adolescent population. Contraceptive failure is often caused by inappropriate or inconsistent use, and discontinuation within the first year is not uncommon. Various methods have been explored within the adolescent population to increase efficacy rates, minimize side effects, and prevent unwanted pregnancies. The use of intrauterine devices and continuous use of combined oral contraceptives may lead to greater efficacy because of the ease of use and reduction in menstrual symptoms. Recent literature supports the continued use of medroxyprog

The worldwide use of steroidal contraception.

Historically, concerns about rapidly growing populations and resources that could not support them persuaded governments of developing countries to initiate family planning programs. Between the early 1960s and the early 1980s, the number of governments supporting these programs increased from 7 to approximately 120. Today, 52 governments in developing countries provide support to family planning programs because of the demographic rationale, and 65 governments do so because of human rights and health considerations: The effective use of family planning significantly diminishes infant, child,

Changes in the use of effective and long-acting reversible contraception in Vietnam.

OBJECTIVES: To calculate the prevalence and identify correlates of unmet need for contraception and to assess whether prevalence of use of effective contraception and long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) has changed over time among married or cohabiting, reproductive-age women in Vietnam. METHODS: Study population was drawn from nationally representative Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys conducted in 2000, 2006, 2011 and 2014. Unmet need for contraception was defined as occurring when a fecund, married or cohabiting woman is not using any method of contraception but either does not wa

Contraception and HIV infection in women.

BACKGROUND: More than 15 million women, many of reproductive age, were infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) at the end of 2007. As the HIV epidemic evolves, heterosexual intercourse is increasingly risky: the risk of infection in exposed young women is 4- to 7-fold higher than in young men and nearly half a million newborns annually have HIV. This review aims to show the effect of contraceptive choices on risk of HIV and on the course of disease in women with HIV. METHODS: Relevant citations were selected by agreement between the authors after a search of MEDLINE using the terms H

Male contraception.

With the powerful tools of molecular investigation, the last decade has witnessed the most remarkable scientific advance in our history, yet no new leads for male contraception have been forthcoming. All the likely methods of male contraception discussed above were derived from relatively 'old' physiological principles or serendipitous observations. The increasing gap between fundamental research (in the control of mammalian spermatogenesis) and the lack of clinical application are a testament to the low public funding priority afforded to male reproduction and the unwillingness of the pharmac

Intimate Partner Violence around the Time of Pregnancy and Postpartum Contraceptive Use.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to examine postpartum contraceptive use among women who reported physical intimate partner violence (IPV) during or within 12 months before pregnancy compared with women who did not report physical IPV and to identify factors associated with nonuse of contraception among women who reported physical IPV. METHODS: Data were obtained from women with a recent live birth from 2012 to 2015 who participated in the Pregnancy Risk Assessment and Monitoring System. We described characteristics of women and postpartum contraceptive use by method effectiveness (most effective [femal

Vanguard family planning acceptors in Senegal.

This study examines contraceptive use among clients at the three clinics providing family planning services in Dakar, Senegal in early 1983. Most clients first became interested in family planning following the birth of a child, and most are interested in spacing future pregnancies, although one-third state that they want no more children. The clinic itself was found to be an important determinant of the type of contraceptive used, with only the government-operated clinic providing a balance between IUDs, oral contraceptives, and barrier methods. Nearly half of the clients interviewed said tha

Barrier and spermicidal contraceptive methods and risk of invasive cervical cancer.

The effects of barrier and spermicidal methods of contraception on cervical cancer risk were examined by studying 479 cases of histologically confirmed invasive cervical cancer cases and 788 random digit dialing controls. In addition to a detailed history of contraceptive practices, information was available on numerous potential confounders, including demographic characteristics, sexual behavior, reproductive factors, Pap smear screening history, and smoking. After adjustment for relevant confounders, diaphragm and condom use were found not to be significantly associated with risk of cervical

Perceptions of community members and healthcare providers on intrauterine devices: a qualitative study in southern Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Despite a notable increase in the overall contraceptive prevalence in Ethiopia in the past two decades, the utilisation of intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCDs) is persistently low. This study aims to provide an in-depth exploration of the perceptions held by community groups, IUCD users and healthcare providers to support efforts to address the existing gap in service uptake. METHODS: Exploratory descriptive qualitative research design was conducted between 1 September 2024 and 1 October 2024, in Sodo town. A maximum variation sample of 23 study participants was recruited

Contraception and ectopic pregnancy risk.

Studies of the association of ectopic pregnancy with contraception have generated a conflicting array of results because of methodologic differences between studies. We estimated the absolute incidence rates of ectopic pregnancy for various contraceptives by multiplying the pregnancy rate by the proportion of pregnancies with ectopic implantation for each method. Our results indicated a more than 500-fold difference in ectopic pregnancy incidence, from a low of 0.005 ectopic pregnancies per 1000 women years of oral contraception or vasectomy to a high of 2.6 per 1000 women years of no contrace

Barrier contraceptives and sexually transmitted diseases in women: a comparison of female-dependent methods and condoms.

INTRODUCTION: Most efforts at sexually transmitted disease (STD) protection center on condom use, but little is known about how condoms compare with other barrier methods, particularly those controlled by women. METHODS: To evaluate the effect of different barrier contraceptives on the prevalence of STDs and other vaginal infections, we retrospectively studied 5681 visits by women to an urban STD clinic. RESULTS: As compared with women using no contraceptive or with tubal ligations, women using the contraceptive sponge or diaphragm had at least 65% lower rates of infection with Neisseria gon

Acceptability of the female condom among STD clinic patients.

This study examines the acceptability of the female condom among African American and Latino patients from two inner-city sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics through focus group discussions. Prior to the initial focus group sessions, 90% (n = 90) had heard about the female condom, 8% (n = 8) had seen it, and 2% (n = 2) had used it. Among the 41 participants (22 males and 19 females) attending a second focus group session, 85.4% (n = 35) had used the female condom at least once. Female study participants who had previous experience inserting a barrier contraceptive device, such as a diap
