Access to female contraceptives by Rohingya refugees, Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of the use of contraceptives among female Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and its associated factors. METHODS: We conducted our cross-sectional survey at the Kutupalong refugee facility located in Cox's Bazar in November 2019. We used univariable and multivariable logistic regression models to determine the association between the use of contraceptives and our various predictor variables, including women's age, age at first marriage, education level and employment status. We also considered factors such as whether previous pregnancies were planned or unp

Impact evaluation of contracting primary health care services in urban Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: The Urban Primary Health Care Project (UPHCP) was implemented by the Government of Bangladesh in response to rapid urbanization and growing inequalities in access to and quality of primary health care. The goal of the project was to improve health status of the urban poor living in city corporations and municipalities through the provision of health care services by NGOs that are contracted through public-private partnership. The first phase of the project started in 1998 and the project is currently in its fourth phase covering more urban areas than the first three phases. This st

Determinants of fertility in Guatemala.

The 1978 Contraceptive Prevalence Survey for Guatemala provides an opportunity to examine fertility levels and a number of determinants of fertility for three broad segments of the country: the Department of Guatemala and, in the remainder of the country, the Ladino and Indian populations. While Ladinos had a much higher rate of contraceptive use than did Indians, the two groups had similar birth rates. The lack of difference in fertility appears to be due to the pattern of prolonged breastfeeding among Indians and perhaps to differences in the rate of conception due to nutrition, coital frequ

Islam and family planning: changing perceptions of health care providers and medical faculty in Pakistan.

A USAID-sponsored family planning project called "FALAH" (Family Advancement for Life and Health), implemented in 20 districts of Pakistan, aimed to lower unmet need for family planning by improving access to services. To enhance the quality of care offered by the public health system, the FALAH project trained 10,534 facility-based health care providers, managers, and medical college faculty members to offer client-centered family planning services, which included a module to explain the Islamic viewpoint on family planning developed through an iterative process involving religious scholars a

From non-use to covert and overt use of contraception: Identifying community and individual factors informing Nigerian women's degree of contraceptive empowerment.

OBJECTIVE: In Nigeria, unmet need for contraception is high despite improved access to modern contraception. To identify factors that support Nigerian women's contraceptive decisions to achieve their reproductive goals, in the presence or absence of their partner's support, we seek to identify individual/couple and community level determinants of a spectrum of contraceptive practices, from non-use to covert and overt use of contraception. METHODS: Data were drawn from a national probability survey conducted by Performance Monitoring and Accountability 2020 in Nigeria in 2017-2018. A sample of

Prevalence and factors associated with covert contraceptive use in Kenya: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Family planning (FP) is a key intervention for preventing unplanned pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and maternal death. Involvement of both women and their partners promotes contraceptive acceptance, uptake and continuation, couple communication and gender-equitable attitude. Partner involvement is a key strategy for addressing about 17.5% of the unmet needs in FP in Kenya. This study assessed the prevalence and factors associated with covert contraceptive use (CCU) in Kenya. METHODS: We used data from the sixth and seventh rounds of the performance monitoring for accountability su

Study of bias in antenatal clinic HIV-1 surveillance data in a high contraceptive prevalence population in sub-Saharan Africa.

OBJECTIVE: To describe patterns, sources and consequences of bias in antenatal clinic (ANC) HIV prevalence estimates in a high contraceptive prevalence population. BACKGROUND: HIV surveillance in Africa relies on data from pregnant women attending ANCs. HIV estimates from pregnant women understate female infection levels in low income, high fertility populations. Bias in high contraceptive use, delayed sexual debut populations remains undescribed. DESIGN AND METHOD: Comparison of parallel cross-sectional population and antenatal survey data from rural Zimbabwe, where 60% of women are recent

Reproductive violence in Morocco: Mixed-methods study to measure associations and experiences of reproductive violence among Moroccan and non-Moroccan women.

OBJECTIVES: Currently, there are no studies on the prevalence of reproductive violence (RV) in Morocco where religious and social norms impact women's reproductive autonomy. To inform the design of integrated gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) programming, we conducted this study with the IPPF Member Association in Morocco (AMPF). The study aimed to measure the experiences of different forms of RV in Morocco, including those forms experienced by Moroccan and non-Moroccan women and girls. METHODS: This study employed mixed methods including a Delphi to agree o

Multiple contraceptive method use and prevalence of fertility awareness based method use in the United States, 2013-2015.

OBJECTIVES: Contraceptive prevalence in the United States is typically calculated according to the most effective method of contraception reported. This could theoretically underestimate the number of women using fertility-awareness based methods (FABMs), including those who use other methods (e.g., condoms) during the fertile window, but the extent of any such underestimation has not been assessed. STUDY DESIGN: We used data from the 2013-2015 National Survey of Family Growth to examine the extent to which women report use of an FABM alone or with other methods. We investigated FABM use patt

Incorporating Method Dissatisfaction into Unmet Need for Contraception: Implications for Measurement and Impact.

While unmet need for contraception is commonly used to assess programmatic needs, it inadequately captures the complexity of fertility and contraceptive preferences, including women's satisfaction with their contraceptive method. In their 2019 commentary, Sarah Rominski and Rob Stephenson propose reclassifying dissatisfied current users as having an unmet need for contraception. As revising the current definition based on their proposal would require significant investment to update survey and monitoring systems, understanding the potential impact on current estimates of unmet need is critical

Association between receipt of school-based HIV education and contraceptive use among sexually active high school students - United States, 2011-2013.

Sexual health education, including HIV prevention information, can help prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. National Youth Risk Behavior Survey data from 2011 and 2013 were used to determine HIV education prevalence among 9,825 currently sexually active students in grades 9-12. Associations between HIV education and contraceptive methods used at last sexual intercourse were examined for: (1) condom use; (2) any contraceptive method; (3) dual use of a condom and either birth control pills; IUD or implant; or shot, patch, or birth control ring; and (4) primary contr
