Substance use disorders and risk of suicide in a general US population: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Prior research suggests that substance use disorders (SUDs) are associated with risk of suicide mortality, but most previous work has been conducted among Veterans Health Administration patients. Few studies have examined the relationship between SUDs and suicide mortality in general populations. Our study estimates the association of SUDs with suicide mortality in a general US population of men and women who receive care across eight integrated health systems. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study using electronic health records and claims data from eight integrated health s

Individualism-Collectivism, Social Self-Control and Adolescent Substance Use and Risky Sexual Behavior.

Individualism and collectivism are cultural syndromes that have been associated with adolescent problem behavior in studies conducted in the U.S. and Southeast Asia. However, research investigating the mechanisms of how cultural orientation impacts health risk behaviors has been limited. This study tested a new model explaining the relationship between cultural orientation (i.e., individualism, collectivism) and adolescent problem behavior (i.e., substance use and risky sex) in terms of interpersonal self-regulation (i.e., social self-control). As such, the study is rooted in theories of the r

Exploring polyamine metabolism of Alternaria alternata to target new substances to control the fungal infection.

Polyamines are essential for all living organisms as they are involved in several vital cell functions. The biosynthetic pathway of polyamines and its regulation is well established and, in this sense, the ornithine descarboxylase (ODC) enzyme acts as one of the controlling factors of the entire pathway. In this work we assessed the inhibition of the ODC with D, l-α-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) on Alternaria alternata and we observed that fungal growth and mycotoxin production were reduced. This inhibition was not completely restored by the addition of exogenous putrescine. Actually, increas

Controlled Substance Prescribing Patterns--Prescription Behavior Surveillance System, Eight States, 2013.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Drug overdose is the leading cause of injury death in the United States. The death rate from drug overdose in the United States more than doubled during 1999-2013, from 6.0 per 100,000 population in 1999 to 13.8 in 2013. The increase in drug overdoses is attributable primarily to the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs, especially opioid analgesics, sedatives/tranquilizers, and stimulants. Such drugs are prescribed widely in the United States, with substantial variation by state. Certain patients obtain drugs for nonmedical use or resale by obtaining overlapping prescript

Quantitative study of controlled substance bedside wasting, disposal and evaluation of potential ecologic effects.

Drugs in wastewater arise from many sources. For health care, these include excretion and direct disposal (bedside wasting). The present study reports on the dispensing and wasting of 15 controlled substances (CS) at two health care facilities in Albany, NY over a nearly two year period. The study considered measures of ecotoxicity, drug metabolism, excretion and disposal of these CS. Potential alternatives to flushing of CS into wastewaters from healthcare facilities are discussed. Drug medication and waste collection records (12,345) included: numbers of drugs dispensed, returned and wasted.

Reducing micropollutants with source control: substance flow analysis of 212 pharmaceuticals in faeces and urine.

Pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment are raising concern. It is expected that many anthropogenic pharmaceuticals are largely excreted via urine; a popular argument for introducing urine source separation. However, to date, this assumption lacks verification. We close this gap with quantitative screening of official pharmaceutical data. We analysed the excretion pathways of 212 pharmaceuticals' active ingredients (AI), equalling 1,409 products. On average, 64% (+/-27%) of each AI was excreted via urine, and 35% (+/-26%) via faeces. In urine, 42% (+/-28%) of each AI was excreted as metabol

Choosing policy instruments for controlling ozone depleting substances in a developing context: the case of Chile.

Chile ratified the Montreal Protocol in 1990 which sets out an agenda for the reduction and then elimination of ozone depleting substances (ODS); however, by 1998 the country had not yet defined a strategy to encourage greater compliance, so that in the same year the National Environmental Commission decided to examine the policy options available. This paper examines the process followed to develop this strategy. As a first step it was necessary to look at how far the implicit policy of "business as usual" could be stretched without jeopardizing Chile's compliance obligations. A second step i

Absence of tonic supraspinal control of substance P release in the substantia gelatinosa of the anaesthetized cat.

Antibody microprobes were used to measure immunoreactive substance P (irSP) release in the substantia gelatinosa of the lower lumbar spinal cord of barbiturate-anaesthetized cats. Release of irSP was produced by noxious peripheral stimuli. Such release was not altered by blocking spinal conduction at the first lumbar segment by cooling or transecting the spinal cord. The results suggest that the release of irSP from the central terminals of nociceptors is not subject to tonic supraspinal inhibition.

Mechanisms of microbial fouling alleviation by controlled-release borates in a recirculating cooling-water system via extracellular polymeric substances composition and metabolomics analysis.

Biofilm accumulation in recirculating cooling-water systems (RCSs) contributes significantly to microbial corrosion and heat transfer impairment. However, traditional chlorine-based bactericides require frequent replenishment for sustained performance and chlorine ions exacerbate pipeline corrosion. This study employs controlled-release borates (CRBs) to ensure continuous boron release and thorough biofilm contact. The release rate of CRBs in the first 10 days was 39.2 mg/(L·d), following zero-order release kinetics. At dosages above 0.4 g-B/L, CRBs reduced total heterotrophic bacteria counts

The influent COD/N ratio controlled the linear alkylbenzene sulfonate biodegradation and extracellular polymeric substances accumulation in an oxygen-based membrane biofilm reactor.

This work evaluated the fates of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), and total nitrogen (TN) when treating greywater (GW) in an oxygen-based membrane biofilm reactor (O2-MBfR). An influent ratio of chemical oxygen demand to total nitrogen (COD/TN) of 20 g COD/g N gave the best removals of LAS, COD, NH4+-N and TN, and it also had the greatest EPS accumulation in the biofilm. Higher EPS and improved performance were linked to increases in the relative abundances of bacteria able to biodegrade LAS (Zoogloea, Pseudomonas, Parvibaculum, Magn

Patterns and risk factors of illicit substance abuse by Sri Lankan teenagers: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Illicit substance abuse among adolescents is an emerging public health challenge in Sri Lanka, yet evidence on independent risk factors, particularly among high-risk teenagers undergoing rehabilitation, remains limited. Understanding social, familial, peer and school-related determinants is essential to inform targeted prevention and intervention strategies. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted among adolescents aged 10-17 years. Cases (n=108) were teenagers admitted for inpatient rehabilitation for illicit substance abuse at the Youth Drug Addiction Prevention, Treatment a

Acupuncture for substance use disorders: a protocol of systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are common and highly disabling, causing serious long-term harm to people's health. Despite the existence of evidence-based interventions for treating SUDs, many individuals remain symptomatic regardless of treatment, and relapse is common. Acupuncture has been examined for the treatment of SUDs, but available evidence is mixed. This comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis aims to provide updated evidence which will include both English and Chinese studies to investigate the effectiveness and safety of different types of acupuncture for th

Context of substance initiation among urban Native Americans: an exploratory retrospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Addiction is a significant problem among many Native American groups but has rarely been examined in urban populations. In particular, little is known about the context in which urban Native Americans first use substances. This study compares cases (people with a history of addiction) to controls (people without a history of addiction) on demographics, substance use history, context of first substance use, and polysubstance use. In addition, this appears to be the first study to overcome the lack of Native American professionals by employing and training lay community members to id
