Bioavailability and Toxicity of nano Copper Oxide to Pakchoi (Brassica Campestris L.) as Compared with bulk Copper Oxide and Ionic Copper.

The increasing use of copper oxide nano particles (nCuO) as nano-fertilizers and pesticides have raised concerns over their impact on soil environment and agricultural products. In this study, two nCuO with different shapes, namely spherical nCuO (CuO NPs) and tubular nCuO (CuO NTs), were selected to investigate their bioavailability and toxicity to pakchoi in two soils with different properties. At the meantime, CuO bulk particles (CuO BPs) and Cu(NO3)2 were used for comparison. Results showed that all the Cu treatments increased the DTPA extractable (DTPA-Cu) concentrations in GD soil (acidi

Toxicity of copper hydroxide nanoparticles, bulk copper hydroxide, and ionic copper to alfalfa plants: A spectroscopic and gene expression study.

Bulk Cu compounds such as Cu(OH)2 are extensively used as pesticides in agriculture. Recent investigations suggest that Cu-based nanomaterials can replace bulk materials reducing the environmental impacts of Cu. In this study, stress responses of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) seedlings to Cu(OH)2 nanoparticle or compounds were evaluated. Seeds were immersed in suspension/solutions of a Cu(OH)2 nanoform, bulk Cu(OH)2, CuSO4, and Cu(NO3)2 at 25 and 75 mg/L. Six days later, the germination, seedling growth, and the physiological and biochemical responses of sprouts were evaluated. All Cu treatment

The binding of copper ions to copper-free bovine superoxide dismutase. Properties of the protein recombined with increasing amounts of copper ions.

1. E.p.r. (electron-paramagnetic-resonance), proton-relaxation and u.v.-absorption parameters, and enzyme activity of samples of Cu2+-free bovine superoxide dismutase recombined with different amounts of Cu2+ up to the stoicheiometric [Cu2+]/protein] ratio were investigated after attainment of equilibrium in the recovery process. 2. The e.p.r. spectra were identical with the spectrum of the native protein at all [Cu2+]/[protein] ratios. The relaxation rate of the water protons (T1) and the u.v. absorption increase as linear functions of the added Cu2+. 3. On the other hand, in recombination ex

Balancing cellular copper levels via the post-translational regulation of copper transport.

Copper (Cu) is essential to life as an enzymatic cofactor, powering a plethora of biological processes. However, cells teeter on a delicate balance where both too much and too little Cu can lead to dysfunction. These risks are exemplified by Menkes disease patients, where Cu deficiency leads to neurodevelopmental delay and early childhood mortality, and those affected by Wilson's disease, where Cu overload results in liver damage, behavioural changes and movement disorders. Cu is also a major cellular stressor, with roles in many other pathologies including neurodegeneration and cancer. Conseq

Copper toxicity in Alzheimer's disease: cognitive loss from ingestion of inorganic copper.

In this review I present the hypothesis that a toxic substance, inorganic copper, ingested from drinking water and vitamin/mineral supplements containing inorganic copper, is at least partially causal of the epidemic of Alzheimer's disease (AD) we are seeing in developed countries. I set the stage for this hypothesis by pointing out that the epidemic is a new disease phenomenon coinciding temporally with the use of copper plumbing in developed countries. The evidence is good that AD was nonexistent or rare in the 1800 s and early 1900 s, and the arguments that elderly people did not exist in t

Relationships between respiratory function disorders and serum copper levels in copper mineworkers.

The aim of this study was to investigate the respiratory function disorders that could be related to dust exposure during the production of copper mine in copper mineworkers (CMWs). The study included 75 male CMWs (mean age, 32.0 ± 7.1 years, 58.6% smokers) and 75 male age- and smoking status-matched healthy control subjects. Serum Cu level was significantly higher in the CMW group (0.80 ± 0.62 μg/ml) than the control group (0.60 ± 0.39 μg/ml) (p = 0.017). Significant negative correlations were found between serum Cu level and forced expiratory volume in first second (r = -0.600; p < 0.001) an

Copper metabolism in mottled mouse mutants: copper therapy of brindled (Mobr) mice.

Copper therapy was applied to brindled mouse mutants, which suffer from lethal hypocupraemia, by using cuprous and cupric solutions. The method of treatment was a single subcutaneous injection of 50 microgram of copper at 7 days of age. Early effects of the dose were: prevention of the tremors and spasms seen in untreated mutants, raising to normal and near-normal of caeruloplasmin oxidase and lysyl oxidase activities and pigmentation of skin and fur. Growth of mutants was retarded up to 23 days of age, but thereafter they rapidly gained weight to be nearly normal by 60 days of age. At 3 days

Phonon Dynamics and Transport Properties of Copper Thiocyanate and Copper Selenocyanate Pseudohalides.

The phonon transport properties of CuSCN and CuSeCN have been investigated using the density functional theory and semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. The Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functional shows an indirect (direct) electronic band gap of 2.18 eV (1.80 eV) for CuSCN (CuSeCN). The calculated phonon band structure shows that both compounds are dynamically stable. The Debye temperature of the acoustic phonons is 122 and 107 K for CuSCN and CuSeCN, respectively. The extended in-plane bond lengths as compared to the out-of-plane bond lengths result in phonon softening and hence, low lattice t

Electrodeposition of nanowires of a high copper content thiourea precursor of copper sulfide.

Copper thiourea complexes are an important material class for application as a precursor of copper sulfide nanocrystals with potential use in solar cells, optoelectronics, medicine, etc. They represent a type of single source precursor, comprising both copper and sulfur in one chemical compound, whose tunable stoichiometry and morphology enable control of the quality and properties of the synthesized copper sulfide nanocrystals. Here, we present a template free electrochemical route to prepare nanowires of copper thiourea (tu) chloride hemihydrate ([Cu(tu)]Cl·½H2O) by pulse deposition. We prop

Idiopathic copper toxicosis: is abnormal copper metabolism a primary cause of this disease?

Idiopathic copper toxicosis (ICT) is characterized by marked copper deposition, Mallory-Denk body (MDB) formation and severe hepatic injury. Although the characteristics are apparently different from Wilson disease, large amounts of copper accumulate in the liver of the patients. We extensively treated a patient with ICT to reduce the body copper, however, the patient needed liver transplantation. Previous liver biopsy revealed high copper content. But extirpated liver contained an extremely small amount of copper, although MDBs and severe inflammation remained. These phenomena suggest abnorma

Spontaneous Reduction of Copper(II) to Copper(I) at Solid-Liquid Interface.

Oxidation and reduction reactions are of central importance in chemistry as well as vital to the basic functions of life and such chemical processes are generally brought about by oxidizing and reducing agents, respectively. Herein, we report the discovery of an interfacial reduction reaction (IRR) - without the use of any external reducing agent. In course of metal-ligand coordination, spontaneous reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) at a solid-liquid interface was observed-unlike in a liquid-phase reaction where no reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) was occurred. High-quality thin films of a new coordinat

Binding of copper(I) by the Wilson disease protein and its copper chaperone.

The Wilson disease protein (WND) is a transport ATPase involved in copper delivery to the secretory pathway. Mutations in WND and its homolog, the Menkes protein, lead to genetic disorders of copper metabolism. The WND and Menkes proteins are distinguished from other P-type ATPases by the presence of six soluble N-terminal metal-binding domains containing a conserved CXXC metal-binding motif. The exact roles of these domains are not well established, but possible functions include exchanging copper with the metallochaperone Atox1 and mediating copper-responsive cellular relocalization. Copper reduction by copper binding proteins and its relation to neurodegenerative diseases.

Increasing evidence supports an important role for metals in neurobiology. In fact, copper binding proteins that form bioinorganic complexes are able to display oxidant or anti-oxidant properties, which would impact on neuronal function or in the triggering of neurodegenerative process. Two proteins related to neurodegenerative diseases have been described as copper binding proteins: the amyloid precursor protein (APP), a protein related to Alzheimer's disease, and the Prion protein (PrP), related to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. We used different synthetic peptides from APP and PrP sequences in

Self-selection of copper-containing diets by copper-deficient and overloaded rats.

To determine the effect of copper status on the preference for copper-containing food, male Sprague-Dawley rats were weaned to a copper-deficient, copper-adequate or high-copper diet. Four weeks later, alterations in copper status were confirmed by measurement of liver copper concentrations. Rats (n=10) were then given the choice between a copper-adequate or a copper-restricted diet of similar composition. Preference scores indicated that control rats preferred copper-deficient food. Preferences of rats on the high-copper diet were not different from control rats, suggesting that copper overlo

Placental copper transport in the rat. II: Effect of maternal copper deficiency.

Copper (Cu) placental transport presents a steep downhill gradient from mother to fetus. This process could be altered by low-molecular-weight (LMW) ligands and maternal Cu deficiency. We compared the ratio of Cu transfer from dam-to-fetus in Cu-deficient (CuDf) and Cu-sufficient (CuSf) rats in the last day of gestation. Anaesthetized dams were iv injected 79 mumol/kg (5 mg/kg) of either Cu acetate [Cu (AcO)2]; Cu+L-histidine, 1:10. [Cu(His)10]; Cu-(glycyl-glycyl-L-histidine) [Cu(GGH)], or saline. Dam and fetal blood, as well as placentae were obtained at 0, 10, 20, 40 and 60 min. At time 0, C

Anemia and neutropenia in a case of copper deficiency: role of copper in normal hematopoiesis.

We present a patient who developed severe anemia and neutropenia after receiving parenteral nutrition for 2.5 years. The serum levels of copper and ceruloplasmin were low, and the bone marrow showed the presence of ringed sideroblasts and vacuolated immature cells. The administration of copper chloride by bolus injection led to a rapid improvement in anemia and neutropenia. The number of progenitor cells (colony-forming unit-granulocyte-macrophage and erythrocyte) present before the copper supplementation was well preserved. It is therefore suggested that copper enzymes play an important role
