Use of Intravascular Lithotripsy for Coral Reef in the Visceral Aorta to Treat Severe Lower Limb Claudication.

INTRODUCTION: Coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare condition described as severe hard-rock calcifications in the aortic lumen. It may present as renal hypertension, lower limb claudication, or even visceral ischemia in some cases. Management is usually by open surgical repair, by aortic endarterectomy, or surgical bypass. Recently, severe arterial calcifications have been treated with intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) with promising results. We aim to present our experience in using IVL in the treatment of CRA. METHODS: This is a retrospective case series of a cohort of patients treated for viscera

Aortic stenting of coral-reef aorta for claudication of possible neurogenic or ischemic origin - A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Coral-reef type aortic occlusions are uncommon conditions that can result in intermittent claudication. Many claudicants also have concomitant neurogenic aetiologies and revascularization alone may not be beneficial. These cases can prove to be a diagnostic challenge. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of worsening bilateral calf claudication in a patient with previously asymptomatic coral-reef type aorta, anxiety, and spinal stenosis presents. Investigations were unable to differentiate between a neurogenic and vascular cause. The patient opted for aortic stent

Risk assessment of coral reef vulnerability to climate change and stressors in tropical islands: The case of Mauritius.

Coral reefs play a critical role in the socio-economic development of oceanic islands, besides offering coastal protection against the destructive forces of the sea under storm conditions. A Multi-Criteria Decision Making-based geospatial model is used which combine highly influential climatic, ecological, and anthropogenic reef degradation factors in view of revealing regions of high coral reef vulnerabilities to inform ecosystems conservation and management. Further investigation of the coastal seawater temperature trend revealed a rise in sea surface temperature approximating 0.66 °C over t

Effects of sponge-to-sponge contact on the microbiomes of three spatially competing Caribbean coral reef species.

Sponges perform important ecosystem functions, host diverse microbial symbiont communities (microbiomes), and have been increasing in density on Caribbean coral reefs over the last decade. Sponges compete for space in coral reef communities through both morphological and allelopathic strategies, but no studies of microbiome impacts during these interactions have been conducted. Microbiome alterations mediate spatial competition in other coral reef invertebrates and may similarly impact competitive outcomes for sponges. In this study, we characterized the microbiomes of three common Caribbean s

Coral reef carnivorous fish biomass relates to oceanographic features depending on habitat and prey preference.

Carnivorous fish are a key part of the Indonesian human population sustenance, and it is important to design marine protected areas that include environmental features that allow these species to thrive. Many studies report the role of coral cover and habitat complexity in determining fish distribution on coral reefs but broader environmental factors such as current velocity and productivity are less studied. Southern Indonesia is characterised by upwellings and strong currents, stemming from the tidal cycle and the Indonesian Throughflow. In this study we investigate how current velocity, chl

Insights into the role of crustose coralline algae microbiomes on coral larval settlement in the Great Barrier Reef.

BACKGROUND: Crustose coralline algae (CCA) enhance coral recruitment, but the response of coral larval settlement to CCA varies between CCA species. Furthermore, it is unclear whether coral larvae respond to settlement cues from the algal host itself or its associated microorganisms. To determine whether CCA-derived settlement cues have a microbial origin, we interrogated the microbiome of 14 coralline algal species and a calcareous non-coralline alga eliciting varying levels of settlement across 14 coral species from a wide diversity of families found in the Great Barrier Reef. RESULTS: Line

Wind, tides, and waves in a shallow coral reef system: observations and modeling of circulation in Tamandaré (Brazil).

Coral reef circulation is governed by the combined effects of waves, tides, winds, and reef morphology, which have significant implications for sediment transport, connectivity, and ecosystem resilience. This study presents the first investigation of the hydrodynamics of the Tamandaré reef system in northeastern Brazil, a shallow, channelized fringing reef subject to persistent trade winds. In situ observations and a coupled depth-averaged hydrodynamic and wave model (Delft3D-SWAN) suggest that circulation within the inner reef lagoon is strongly associated with wind forcing at subtidal timesc

A catalogue of coral reef fishes from the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area, Sabah, Malaysia.

This study provides the first comprehensive checklist of coral reef fishes from the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area (SIMCA), Sabah, Malaysia, a strictly no-take marine protected area (MPA) in the Sulu Sea. Based on underwater surveys and intercepted trawl landings conducted between 2006 and 2023, we recorded 622 species representing 73 families. The most species-rich families were Labridae (74 species), Pomacentridae (61), and Gobiidae (57), together with six other families that collectively comprised 55% of all records. The Coral Reef Fish Diversity Index (CFDI) estimated a potential r

Aortic Resection and Replacement for Coral Reef Aorta Involving Severe Obstructive Calcification: A Case Report.

Coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare aortic condition characterized by calcifications protruding into the lumen, resulting in severe stenosis that can lead to symptoms such as intermittent claudication in the lower limbs and intestinal ischemia. Some patients may progress to fatal conditions such as intestinal ischemia or congestive heart failure. A 74-year-old female was referred to our hospital with intermittent claudication and severe calcification of the abdominal aorta. Computed tomography (CT) scans revealed extensive calcification of the infrarenal abdominal aorta, with protrusions into the

An integrative investigation of developmental toxicities induced by triphenyltin in a larval coral reef fish, Amphiprion ocellaris.

Triphenyltin (TPT) is widely distributed on coastlines, which makes coral reef fish a potential target of TPT pollution. However, the negative effects of TPT on coral reef fish remain poorly understood. Therefore, in the present study, the larval coral reef fish Amphiprion ocellaris was used to investigate the developmental toxicities of TPT at environmentally relevant concentrations (0, 1, 10 and 100 ng/L). After TPT exposure for 14 d, the cumulative mortality increased, and growth was suppressed. In addition, TPT exposure inhibited the development of melanophores and xanthophores and delayed

Acute noise is harmful on the anti-predator behaviour of commercially important juvenile coral reef fishes.

Fish stock enhancement has been utilised in Taiwan for more than 30 years, yet the impacts of anthropogenic noise on the enhancement programs remain unknown. Anthropogenic noise can induce physiological and behavioural changes in many marine fishes. Therefore, we investigated the effects of acute boat noise (from stock enhancement release sites) and chronic noise (from aquaculture processes) on the anti-predator behaviour in three juvenile reef fishes: Epinephelus coioides, Amphiprion ocellaris and Neoglyphidodon melas. We exposed fish to aquaculture noise, boat noise and a combination of both

Size-weight relationships for estimating harvestable biomass of Acropora corals on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Although hard corals (order Scleractinia) are listed in Appendix II of the Convention for the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), there is significant ongoing wild harvest and international trade, mostly for the aquarium industry. Acropora corals account for the majority of aquarium corals harvested and traded, but are also extremely vulnerable to fisheries-independent threats, especially climate-induced coral bleaching. Reconciling effects of coral harvesting is complicated as harvest limits are based on weight, while there is limited data on standing biomass of Acropora from d

Distribution and predicted climatic refugia for a reef-building cold-water coral on the southeast US margin.

Climate change is reorganizing the planet's biodiversity, necessitating proactive management of species and habitats based on spatiotemporal predictions of distributions across climate scenarios. In marine settings, climatic changes will predominantly manifest via warming, ocean acidification, deoxygenation, and changes in hydrodynamics. Lophelia pertusa, the main reef-forming coral present throughout the deep Atlantic Ocean (>200 m), is particularly sensitive to such stressors with stark reductions in suitable habitat predicted to accrue by 2100 in a business-as-usual scenario. However, with

Dimethylsulphoniopropionate as a water quality indicator of coral bleaching: Implications for monitoring studies on the Great Barrier Reef.

Short term stress experiments with dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and tripolyphosphate (TPP) have been carried out on the staghorn coral Acropora intermedia, collected from Heron Island in the southern Great Barrier Reef, at low and elevated seawater temperatures. Zooxanthellae, chlorophyll a, intracellular and tissue dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), and extracellular DMSP production were measured to assess the level of stress on A. intermedia at different winter and summer seasons from 2001 to 2003. Whilst no significant changes were measured in these stress indicators in 2001 and 200

[Disease in scleractinian corals: a new problem in the reef at Cayo Sombrero, Morrocoy National Park, Venezuela?].

At the beginning of 1996 coral reefs in Morrocoy National Park, Venezuela, suffered an unprecedented mass mortality event. As a consequence, live coral cover dropped to 2-10%. One of the few reefs that kept live coral cover over 35% was Cayo Sombrero; nonetheless, the presence of some coral diseases has been detected within the past 2 years, representing a new source of coral mortality. Due to this situation, this study started a monitoring program on the incidence of coral diseases and syndromes in the reef of Cayo Sombrero. The CARICOMP protocol was used in order to evaluate reef health. Ten

Leaning left: how turn bias and habitat complexity shape spatial cognition in a coral-reef fish.

In coral reef ecosystems, anthropogenic change is rapidly altering habitat structure, but the consequences for fish cognition remain poorly understood. We tested whether structural habitat complexity influences spatial learning and strategy use in the humbug damselfish (Dascyllus aruanus). Juveniles were reared in aquaria containing either high- or low-complexity coral structures and trained in a T-maze task, requiring the use of egocentric (turn-based) and/or allocentric (landmark-based) strategies to locate a reward. Performance was assessed using the number of trials to reach a learning cri

The influence of cross-generational warming on the juvenile development of a coral reef fish under ocean warming and acidification.

Marine ecosystems are facing escalating chronic and acute environmental stressors, yet our understanding of how multiple stressors influence individuals is limited. Here, we investigated how projected ocean warming (+1.5 °C) during grandparental (F1) and parental (F2) generations of the spiny chromis damselfish (Acanthochromis polyacanthus), influences the sensitivity of F3 juveniles to ocean warming (present-day vs +1.5 °C) and/or elevated CO2 (490 μatm vs 825 μatm). After 16 weeks of exposure, aerobic physiology (resting oxygen consumption, maximum oxygen consumption, and absolute aerobic sc

Selective enrichment of bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in microplastic biofilms and their potential hazards in coral reef ecosystems.

Microplastics become hotspots for bacteria to trigger a series of ecological effects, but few studies have focused on the potential impacts of microplastic biofilms in coral reef ecosystems. Here, we measured the bacterial communities and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the seawater and microplastic biofilms. Results showed that microbial biofilms were formed on the surface of microplastics. The alpha diversity of the bacterial community in the microplastic biofilms was lower than that in the seawater, and the bacterial communities were distinct between the two. Further analysis revealed

Distinguishing the molecular diversity, nutrient content, and energetic potential of exometabolomes produced by macroalgae and reef-building corals.

Metabolites exuded by primary producers comprise a significant fraction of marine dissolved organic matter, a poorly characterized, heterogenous mixture that dictates microbial metabolism and biogeochemical cycling. We present a foundational untargeted molecular analysis of exudates released by coral reef primary producers using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to examine compounds produced by two coral species and three types of algae (macroalgae, turfing microalgae, and crustose coralline algae [CCA]) from Mo'orea, French Polynesia. Long-term exposure to artificial light at night in the wild decreases survival and growth of a coral reef fish.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is an increasing anthropogenic pollutant, closely associated with human population density, and now well recognized in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. However, we have a relatively poor understanding of the effects of ALAN in the marine realm. Here, we carried out a field experiment in the coral reef lagoon of Moorea, French Polynesia, to investigate the effects of long-term exposure (18-23 months) to chronic light pollution at night on the survival and growth of wild juvenile orange-fin anemonefish, Amphiprion chrysopterus.
