Risk factors for development of myelopathy in patients with cervical spondylotic cord compression.

PURPOSE: To clarify risk factors for the development of myelopathy in patients with cervical spondylotic cord compression. METHOD: The authors reviewed articles in which risk factors for the development of myelopathy in patients with cervical spondylotic cord compression were discussed. Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) was also reviewed as a disease which causes cervical cord compression to clarify pathomechanism of the development of myelopathy. RESULTS: Cervical motion segment disorders are considered to be multifactorial, and developmental size of the canal and f

Analysis of the risk factors for tracheostomy in traumatic cervical spinal cord injury.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective, consecutive case series. OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk factors that have a statistically significant association with the need of tracheostomy in patients with cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) at the acute stage. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Respiratory complications remain a major cause of further morbidity and mortality in patients with CSCI. Although several risk factors for tracheostomy have been postulated in these patients, no definitive factors have yet been established according to a multivariate analysis. The use of vital capacity was considered as

Factors that limit access to dental care for adults with spinal cord injury.

This study investigated dental care service utilization among adults with spinal cord injury (SCI) and identified barriers and other factors affecting utilization among this population. There were 192 subjects with SCI who participated in the oral health survey assessing dental care service utilization and they were compared with subjects from the 2004 Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System (BRFSS). There was no significant difference in the proportion of subjects with SCI who visited the dentist for any reason in the past year compared to the general population (65.5% vs. 68.8%, p= .350)

Risk factors for chest illness in chronic spinal cord injury: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Chest illnesses commonly cause morbidity in persons with chronic spinal cord injury. Risk factors remain poorly characterized because previous studies have not accounted for factors other than spinal cord injury. DESIGN: Between 1994 and 2005, 403 participants completed a respiratory questionnaire and underwent spirometry. Participants were contacted at a median of 1.7 yrs [interquartile range: 1.3-2.5 yrs] apart over a mean (SD) of 5.1 +/- 3.0 yrs and asked to report chest illnesses that had resulted in time off work, spent indoors, or in bed since prior contact. RESULTS: In 97 p

Factors associated with outcomes of unrelated cord blood transplant: guidelines for donor choice.

OBJECTIVE: Optimizing cord blood donor selection based mainly on cell dose and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) disparities may further improve results of unrelated cord blood transplants (UCBT). MATERIALS AND RESULTS: We analyzed 550 UCBTs for hematologic malignancies reported to the Eurocord Registry. Main outcomes and prognostic factors were analyzed in univariable and multivariable analyses incorporating center and period effects and using death and relapse as competitive risks for nonfatal endpoints. Nucleated cell (NC) dose before freezing and number of HLA disparities had a significant in

A second traumatic spinal cord injury: associated risk factors. Case report and review.

Despite advances in acute care and long term management, traumatic spinal cord injury remains a devastating and disabling event. This report describes the case of a second traumatic spinal cord injury in a previously rehabilitated and functionally independent paraplegic. Factors potentially associated with the second spinal cord injury in this patient include wheelchair use, previous spinal fusion, alcohol use and sensation-seeking behavior. These factors, which are common to many spinal cord injured patients, could potentially be risk factors for a second traumatic spinal injury.

Risk Factors for Spinal Cord Compression on MRI in Oncology: Enhancing Diagnostic Yield.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Epidural spinal cord compression (ESCC) is an important cause of disability among patients with cancer. Early detection is crucial for optimizing clinical outcomes. MRI is the preferred imaging technique for ruling out ESCC and is frequently requested in radiology departments, particularly in the emergent setting. However, data on the efficacy and diagnostic yield of total spine MRI for the diagnosis of ESCC in oncology patients remain limited. This study evaluates the frequency of positive findings and associated risk factors in a tertiary cancer center. MATERIALS AND

Incidence and risk factors of intubation-related vocal cord paralysis after unilateral thyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Vocal cord paralysis (VCP) is a recognized complication of endotracheal intubation, but its true incidence may be underestimated because many asymptomatic cases remain undetected. Previous studies have focused primarily on VCP affecting the surgical side after unilateral thyroidectomy, whereas the non-surgical side has received less attention. The present study determines the incidence and risk factors of intubation-induced VCP on the non-surgical side in patients undergoing hemithyroidectomy. RESULTS: This retrospective cohort included 339 patients who underwent hemithyroidectomy

Postnatal cord care practices and associated factors in Arba Minch town, southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Cord care is one component of essential newborn care that reduces newborn morbidity and mortality. Poor cord care practice leads to a large amount of neonatal death due to infection. In Ethiopia, many women give birth at home, where neonates are exposed to unclean cord care practices or application of different traditional substances. Despite the severity of the problem, studies related to postnatal cord care practice are scarce. Hence, this study is aimed to assess umbilical cord care practices and associated factors in the postnatal period in Arba Minch town. OBJECTIVE: To asses

Genomic profiling and prognostic factors of H3 K27M-mutant spinal cord diffuse glioma.

H3 K27-altered diffuse midline glioma is a highly lethal pediatric-type tumor without efficacious treatments. Recent findings have highlighted the heterogeneity among diffuse midline gliomas with different locations and ages. Compared to tumors located in the brain stem and thalamus, the molecular and clinicopathological features of H3 K27-altered spinal cord glioma are still largely elusive, thus hindering the accurate management of patients. Here we aimed to characterize the clinicopathological and molecular features of H3 K27M-mutant spinal cord glioma in 77 consecutive cases. We found that
