Congenital corneal opacities as a new feature in an unusual case of White-Sutton syndrome.

A 2-week-old girl presented with bilateral congenital corneal opacities. Additional systemic manifestations included microcephaly, patent foramen ovale, and poor feeding. Patient and parents underwent whole exome sequencing trio analysis that revealed a de novo pathogenic variant in POGZ (p.Val1150GlyfsX8), which is causative of the White-Sutton syndrome. This rare genetic condition is usually associated with intellectual and developmental delay, facial dysmorphism, strabismus, refractive error, and retinal changes. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of White-Sutton syndrome pre

Bilateral ring-shaped intrastromal opacities after corneal cross-linking for keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To report a case of bilateral, ring-shaped, intrastromal corneal opacities after corneal cross-linking (CXL) for progressive keratoconus. METHODS: A 21-year-old man with bilateral, progressive keratoconus underwent CXL with riboflavin 0.1% and ultraviolet A (UVA) light in the right eye and, 6 months later, in the left eye. RESULTS: One day after CXL, the right eye showed a sharply demarcated white ring in the corneal periphery. The ring involved the superficial stroma at 2 mm from the limbus, extended from 1 to 11 o'clock, and was 1.5-mm wide. Corneal topography showed marked centra

A novel congenital ichthyosiform syndrome with associated panhypopituitarism, corneal opacities and mental retardation.

A 15-year-old male presented with ichthyosis since infancy with panhypopituitarism, short stature and knock-knees, delayed puberty, high scrotal retractile testes, mental retardation and corneal opacities. He developed recurrent tinea capitis and tinea corporis. The clinical symptomatology indicates that this case cannot be considered as a subtype of inherited ichthyosis group, but suggests a new syndrome as a separate nosologic entity. Two previously reported cases with possibly the same syndrome also had ichthyosis associated with variable endocrinopathy. Thorough endocrinological evaluation

[Etiology of corneal opacities after plasminogen activator-induced fibrinolysis of the anterior chamber].

BACKGROUND: After treatment of anterior chamber fibrinous reactions by tissue plasminogen activator (TPA), irreversible corneal opacifications (calcium phosphate) have been observed. To understand the mechanism of these opacifications an animal model was developed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In rabbits the lens was removed by phacoemulsification. The surgical procedure was completed by an injection of TPA (25 micrograms) into the anterior chamber. In a second group TPA fibrinolysis (25 micrograms) was induced 10 min after injection of autologous blood. In a third group 25 micrograms of TPA was inj

[Optical rehabilitation and pediatric ophthalmological care following keratoplasty for childhood corneal opacities].

BACKGROUND: The younger the children are at the time of corneal transplantation, the worse the survival prognosis of the graft. PREOPERATIVE CONSIDERATIONS: Preoperative considerations are significant in terms of accurate parental education, ensuring adherence to treatment and choosing the appropriate surgical time frame (amblyopia versus graft failure, compliance of the patient). Parental education must include the reduced visual prognosis in young children, exceptions being later acquired corneal pathologies such as inflammatory corneal scars (herpes) and keratoconus. POSTOPERATIVE CARE: A

[Surgical treatment options for congenital/infantile corneal opacities and anterior segment dysgenesis].

BACKGROUND: Due to the risk of amblyopia congenital and infantile corneal opacities have a narrow therapeutic window, frequently with a complex surgical treatment. OBJECTIVE: The present study gives an overview of the current treatment options for congenital and infantile corneal opacities. METHODS: The results of a literature search are presented and own clinical data and examples are shown. RESULTS: In children ophthalmologic operations are surgically more demanding and the prognosis is generally worse. Surgical options include phototherapeutic keratectomy, crosslinking, corneal sutures,

Corneal opacities in mice exposed to repeated contact procedures during ocular examinations.

BACKGROUND: Cystine/glutamate exchanger (xCT) knockout mice are reported to exhibit an oxidative shift in the plasma cystine/cysteine ratio reminiscent of that seen in human plasma of ageing individuals. This suggests that the xCT knockout mouse is a model of accelerated ageing. The aim of this study was to examine the progression of age-related pathologies in the ocular tissues of wild-type mice and compare this to the xCT knockout mice. METHODS: Wild-type and xCT knockout mice were examined longitudinally or as separate groups of animals at six weeks, three months, six months, nine months,

Bilateral Congenital Corneal Opacities as an Early-Onset Ocular Feature of Kabuki Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Kabuki syndrome (KS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by multiple systemic anomalies and unique facial characteristics. Here, we present the first case, to the best of our knowledge, of bilateral congenital corneal opacities as an early-onset ocular manifestation of KS associated with a KMT2D gene mutation. METHODS: The proband is a girl. At birth, bilateral corneal opacities, short fifth fingers, patent ductus arteriosus, absence of the uvula, and an ectopic kidney on the right side were noted. Ophthalmic examinations revealed vascularized, nonhomogeneous opacities in bot

Automated lamellar therapeutic keratoplasty with fibrin adhesive in the treatment of anterior corneal opacities.

PURPOSE: To assess the visual outcome of using fibrin adhesive in automated lamellar therapeutic keratoplasty with a microkeratome in the treatment of anterior corneal opacities. METHODS: In this prospective noncomparative clinical trial, surgery was done on 10 eyes belonging to 9 patients with anterior stromal opacity (macular dystrophy, spheroidal degeneration, scarring because of advanced recurrent pterygium, refractive surgery, or trauma). Depending on the depth of the opacity, a 130- or 250-μm flap was removed from the recipient cornea using a microkeratome. Then, a thin layer of fibrin

Fish eye disease: a new familial condition with massive corneal opacities and dyslipoproteinaemia.

Fish eye disease (FED) is characterized by severe corneal opacities, causing impaired vision, and dyslipoproteinaemia: hypertriglyceridaemia, raised levels of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL), triglyceride enrichment of low density lipoproteins (LDL) and reduction of high density lipoproteins (HDL). The disease is described in two unrelated families. In both there was a high proportion of low HDL in relatives without eye disease. VLDL, LDL and HDL had normal electrophoretic mobilities. The concentrations of VLDL cholesterol and triglycerides were increased fivefold. LDL cholesterol levels

Fish-eye disease. A new familial condition with massive corneal opacities and dyslipoproteinaemia.

A man and his three daughters had massive corneal opacities called in their home village "fish-eye disease" because of the resemblance of the eyes to those of boiled fish. The two living daughters had the same dyslipoproteinaemia, characterised by normal serum cholesterol but raised serum triglycerides, raised very-low-density lipoproteins, strikingly high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) triglycerides. LDL contained normal sized as well as abnormally large particles and a 90% reduction in the level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCA

Corneal blindness in Plato's cave: the acting forces to prevent and revert corneal opacity. Part I: epidemiology and new physiopathological concepts.

The burden of corneal blindness and visual deficiency can be felt worldwide. Its association with several endemic diseases such as childhood blindness, trauma, infectious keratitis (including variants caused by herpes, hanseniasis, and fungi), vitamin A deficiency, diabetes mellitus, and other dry eye syndromes reflects its poorly understood underlying mechanisms and suggests that the actual frequency of the disease is underestimated. The low effectiveness of preventive and therapeutic strategies against corneal scarring or deformity predicts a high frequency of patients with corneal blindness

Dropped Lens Fragments Retrieval Using Endoscopy-Assisted Pars Plana Vitrectomy in Patients With Corneal Opacity.

PURPOSE: To characterize the surgical outcomes of endoscopy-assisted pars plana vitrectomy (E-PPV) in dropped lens fragments retrieval in patients with corneal opacity. BACKGROUND: Corneal opacity may delay dropped lens fragment retrieval because of limited fundus view. E-PPV permits posterior segment visualization through corneal opacity. There are limited data on E-PPV use for dropped lens fragments retrieval in the literature. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of dropped lens fragments retrieval procedures done between 2013 and 2023 a

Two-step keratoplasty for deep vascularized corneal opacity with severe peripheral thinning following Acanthamoeba keratitis.

PURPOSE: In cases of corneal opacity with vascularization and peripheral thinning, traditional keratoplasty techniques have several risks and drawbacks. We report the results of a two-step surgical strategy consisting in performing a large diameter tectonic lamellar keratoplasty (TLK) to restore appropriate corneal thickness and an avascular recipient bed, followed by central optical PK within the lamellar graft at a later date. METHODS: This single-institution study analyzes the results of 7 eyes of 7 patients who received PK after large diameter TLK. All patients were affected by deep post-

Impact of keratocyte differentiation on corneal opacity resolution and visual function recovery in male rats.

Intrastromal cell therapy utilizing quiescent corneal stromal keratocytes (qCSKs) from human donor corneas emerges as a promising treatment for corneal opacities, aiming to overcome limitations of traditional surgeries by reducing procedural complexity and donor dependency. This investigation demonstrates the therapeutic efficacy of qCSKs in a male rat model of corneal stromal opacity, underscoring the significance of cell-delivery quality and keratocyte differentiation in mediating corneal opacity resolution and visual function recovery. Quiescent CSKs-treated rats display improvements in esc

Reports of Corneal Opacity in Wild Andean Night Monkeys (Aotus lemurinus) in the Colombian Andes.

Morphological abnormalities are rarely reported in night monkeys; in particular, eye problems in wild individuals are relatively rare in the literature. We present for the first time a record of corneal opacity in two wild individuals of the species Aotus lemurinus in the Andean region of Colombia. In this study, we found cases of corneal opacity probably associated with infectious and contagious processes, injuries resulting from attacks, the age of the individuals, and the health status of the groups in wildlife. We encourage researchers to report their observations of wild primates with ocu
