Cytotoxicity due to corrosion of ear piercing studs.

It is well known that allergic and/or inflammatory reactions can be elicited from the use of gold-coated studs, particularly the type used for piercing ears, since they are left in contact with body fluids until the puncture heals. Inasmuch as gold is known as a non-toxic element, other elements of the substrate material may be responsible for some allergies. Therefore, characteristics of the coating, such as defects that expose the substrate to the human skin or body fluids, play an important role in the development of skin sensitization. In this study, the cytotoxicity of commercial studs us

Effects of fused-ring antibiotics on metallic corrosion.

The effect on metallic corrosion of antibiotics containing the fused-ring structure of tetracycline (doxycycline and the dihydrate and hydrochloride salts of oxytetracycline) when present in 1% KCl solution was investigated. Corrosion potential and zero resistance ammetry studies were carried out; the effects observed were variable and depended upon the nature of the metal and its surface condition. All three antibiotics appeared to stimulate the corrosion of Vitallium (cobalt-chromium alloy), but corrosion inhibition was found for as-received titanium with all three antibiotics, for abraded t

Carbonyl sulfide: potential agent of atmospheric sulfur corrosion.

Laboratory exposure experiments demonstrate that carbonyl sulfide in wet air corrodes copper at 22 degrees C at a rate that is approximately linear with total exposure (the product of exposure time and carbonyl sulfide concentration). The corrosion rate is similar to that of hydrogen sulfide, a widely recognized corrodant. The much greater average atmospheric abundance of carbonyl sulfide compared with that of hydrogen sulfide or sulfur dioxide suggests that carbonyl sulfide may be a major agent of atmospheric sulfur corrosion.

Integrated assessment of corrosion behaviour in drinking water distribution systems using experimental analysis, machine learning, and a unified corrosion-scaling index.

Corrosion and scaling in drinking water distribution systems negatively affects the pipe lifespan, water quality, and cost of maintenance. Empirical corrosion and scaling indices are derived based on physicochemical water parameters. Each of these indices comes from different chemical assumptions and interpretation ranges. They provide conflicting results for the same sample of water. This study employed a hybrid methodology integrating experimental investigation, statistical analysis, and machine learning modeling toward enhanced evaluation of corrosion. Water samples were collected during an

A shield and a signal: Smart polymeric coatings reinforced with zinc-imidazole carboxylate framework for dual corrosion inhibition and corrosion sensing.

Polymeric coatings are widely employed for the corrosion protection of metallic substrates due to their effective barrier properties; however, they are vulnerable to undetected defects that enable electrolyte ingress and initiate localized corrosion. In this study, we report on the synthesis and development of a multifunctional, smart epoxy-based coating system capable of simultaneously sensing and inhibiting corrosion. The system incorporates a synthesized zinc-imidazole carboxylate framework type MOF (ZIF) carrier, loaded with 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (2MBI) as a corrosion inhibitor and bis-c

In-depth insight into the corrosion inhibition mechanism of Panax notoginseng leaf extract on the corrosion of mild steel in an acidic environment.

An eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor, Panax notoginseng leaf extract (PNLE), was systematically studied via electrochemical experiments, surface analysis, and first-principles calculations. Electrochemical measurements show that PNLE exhibits remarkable inhibition performance toward mild steel in 1 M HCl medium, with a peak inhibition efficiency of 99.1% at 400 mg L-1. Theoretical calculations corroborate the generation of Fe-O, Fe-N, and Fe-C bonds at the PNLE-steel interface, which furnishes unambiguous evidence for chemisorption. Overall, PNLE exhibits outstanding corrosion inhibition perfor

Add oleander to your list of corrosives.

INTRODUCTION: Nerium oleander is a toxic ornamental plant which usually grows in the Mediterranean area. In the past it was used to produce cardiotonic medicine and there are studies on using this plant as an anti-cancer medicine and on its use in alternative medicine for many causes. CASE PRESENTATION: Our case was of a 36 years old male who came to the emergency department with sore throat and burning feel in the throat following his curious bite of the oleander leaf. He had no trouble of breathing. The physical examination of the mouth showed burn-like lesions and edema of the uvula, oroph

Corrosive esophagitis caused by ingestion of picosulfate.

Corrosive esophagitis is characterized by caustic injury due to the ingestion of chemical agents, mainly alkaline substances such as detergents. Esophageal bleeding, perforation, or stricture can be worsened by high-degree corrosive esophagitis. Picosulfate is a commonly used laxative frequently administered for bowel preparation before colonoscopy or colon surgery. Picosulfate powder should be completely dissolved in water before ingestion because the powder itself may cause chemical burning of the esophagus and stomach. Here, we report a case of corrosive esophagitis due to the ingestion of

Liver necrosis following corrosive ingestion.

We describe a rare sequel of corrosive ingestion. In this patient, ingestion of a corrosive led to ischemic necrosis of the entire left lobe of the liver (segments II, III, and IV) in addition to causing full-thickness necrosis of the esophagus/stomach, infarction of the spleen, and injury to the left hemidiaphragm. Solid organ involvement following corrosive ingestion is uncommon. Although involvement of the spleen and pancreas from extension of corrosive burns from the adjacent stomach is occasionally described, involvement of the liver following corrosive ingestion has not been reported in

Is esophagoscopy necessary for corrosive ingestion in adults?

The aim of the study was to determine whether early esophagoscopy is really necessary for the patients who have ingested a corrosive agent. Patients who were followed up with the diagnosis of corrosive ingestion in our clinic between the years 1998 and 2008 were studied retrospectively. The data were collected through the medical records of the patients and from interviews with them. The analyzed parameters included age, gender, the nature and the amount of the ingested agent, whether the event was accidental or suicidal, diagnostic tools, treatment and the results of the treatment, and long-t

[A case of carcinosarcoma in a patient with corrosive esophagitis].

Carcinosarcoma of the esophagus is a rare malignancy accounting for approximately 1-2% of all esophageal neoplasms. It presents as a bulky intraluminal polypoid lesion mainly in the mid to lower esophagus, which harbors both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components histologically. It often presents relatively early because of its rapid intraluminal growth. We report the case of a 69-year-old man who had suffered from dysphagia for 1 month. He was previously admitted to the hospital due to corrosive esophagitis caused by ingestion of acetic acid. Endoscopy and radiological studies revealed a bu

[Acute states in poisoning with corrosive substances].

Caustics are products which produces necrosis on contact place with chemical affinity to organic substance. Destroying intensity depend of types, concentration and quantity of product ingested. Poisons could be accidental and suicidal. Concentrated caustics rapidly produces necrosis, strong pain and severe general reaction on acute trauma, shock. Except the fact that acute burns with caustics products require an immediate diagnostic and therapeutic approach, this problem remains controversial. A retrospective analysis of 97 cases in last five years, including the war, in our ENT clinic done. S
