Corynebacterium Bacteremia in a High-risk Host: A Diagnostic Dilemma of Contamination Versus True Infective Endocarditis.

Corynebacterium species are often regarded as skin contaminants when isolated from clinical cultures. However, in select high-risk patients, these organisms can lead to significant infections, including infective endocarditis. We present the case of a 76-year-old woman with multiple comorbidities, including end stage renal disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis and an exposed tunneled central catheter, who developed Corynebacterium-associated native mitral valve endocarditis requiring surgical intervention. Despite prompt antimicrobial therapy and bioprosthetic valve replacement, her hospital course w

Case Report: Bloodstream Infection with Toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Gram-Negative Sepsis in a Child with Burns.

Corynebacterium (C.) diphtheriae is the agent for a contagious infection, diphtheria. It may manifest as pharyngitis with pseudomembrane formation and cervical lymphadenopathy, cutaneous infection, or as an asymptomatic carrier. Corynebacterium (C.) diphtheriae is not an invasive organism and it remains in the superficial layers of skin lesions and respiratory mucosa. Systemic complications, such as bacteremia, are rare. We report a case of toxigenic C. diphtheriae detected from blood culture of a 1-year-old male patient with burns, who succumbed to the infection after 8 days of stay in the ho

Corynebacterium macginleyi in the era of MALDI-TOF MS: epidemiology, susceptibility patterns and prevalence of co-infection.

Corynebacterium macginleyi has long been associated with ocular infections and has more recently been rarely implicated in systemic infections. There is a paucity of literature regarding the rate of C. macginleyi co-infection with other bacterial and viral pathogens and regarding the incidence of C. macginleyi infection in the paediatric population. In this study, we report 30 isolates of C. macginleyi of ocular origin from 26 patients, identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The rates of co-isolation with bacterial and vira

Characterization of Corynebacterium diphtheriae, C. confusum and C. amycolatum isolated from sows with genitourinary infection.

Porcine Corynebacterium infection is still poorly studied, even though the pig has been described as an asymptomatic carrier of Corynebacterium species, including the zoonotic species C. ulcerans, C. confusum and C. amycolatum. Here we present the identification, molecular and antimicrobial susceptibility characterization of coryneform bacteria isolated from sows with urinary tract infection. C. diphtheriae, C. confusum and C. amycolatum were isolated from sows with urinary infection and metritis. Corynebacterium species were identified by MALDI-TOF MS and confirmed by 16S rRNA and rpoB sequen

Two Cases of Granulomatous Mastitis Caused by Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii Infection in Nulliparous Young Women with Hyperprolactinemia.

Recently, an association between granulomatous mastitis and local infection with Corynebacterium (C.) kroppenstedtii has been suggested. We herein report two cases of granulomatous mastitis resulting from C. kroppenstedtii infection in nulliparous young women with hyperprolactinemia. Both cases involved nulliparous patients with drug-induced hyperprolactinemia, and both individuals received incision and drainage, after which the pus was sent to our laboratory. Corynebacterium spp. grew on blood agar, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing identified the pathogen as C. kroppenstedtii. In conclusion, lact

Effect of Corynebacterium parvum on the course of a Listeria monocytogenes infection in normal and congenitally athymic (nude) mice.

Spleen counts of Listeria monocytogenes in normal mice challenged with various numbers of organisms were generally lower in mice injected 3 days previously with killed Corynebacterium parvum. This increased resistance was unexpected since C. parvum generally inhibits T cell-mediated immunity, the functional immunity against Listeria being T cell-dependent. The inhibitory effect on T cells seemed to be compensated by the stimulatory effect of C. parvum on macrophages. Therefore, the experiments were repeated in congenitally athymic (nude) mice (B10LP) lacking functional T cells. C. parvum pretr

A Case of Corynebacterium diphtheriae Native Mitral and Tricuspid Valve Infective Endocarditis Complicated by Shower Emboli.

Infective endocarditis is a rare phenomenon that may have devastating consequences. While uncommon, the spectrum of causative organisms can include Corynebacterium species. Corynebacterium diphtheriae endocarditis bears a high potential for systemic complications and overall mortality. We present a case of mitral and tricuspid native valve endocarditis caused by C. diphtheriae in an immunocompetent patient and highlight the severe manifestations of this condition.

TRIM21 interacts with IκBα and negatively regulates NF-κB activation in Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis-infected macrophages.

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, a zoonotic intracellular bacteria, is responsible for abscesses and pyogranuloma formation of the infected host, which is essentially a chronic inflammatory response. Tripartite motif-containing protein 21 (TRIM21) negatively regulates pro-inflammatory cytokines production during C. pseudotuberculosis infection, the mechanism of which remains unclear. This study found that C. pseudotuberculosis infection in macrophages induced phosphorylation of IκB and p65. TRIM21 interacted with IκBα by PRY/SPRY domain, stabilizes IκBα and negatively regulates IκBα phospho

Case report: Secondary neck mass infection in a patient with multiple osteomyelitis caused by Corynebacterium striatum.

RATIONALE: The opportunistic pathogen Corynebacterium striatum has been generating more clinical infections in recent years, but secondary infections at different parts caused by it have been reported more rarely. PATIENT CONCERNS: This case details a 52-year-old male patient who got an infection that advanced to multiple osteomyelitis and soft tissue abscess after block therapy for external humeral epicondylitis of the right arm. Unexpectedly, the chronic ulcerated region of the patient's neck was infested with Corynebacterium striatum due to inadequate treatment of the main infection, resul

Polymicrobial Wound Infection Caused by Lelliottia amnigena, Staphylococcus aureus, and Corynebacterium Following a Lawnmower Accident.

Lelliottia amnigena, a Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacterium commonly isolated from aqueous and soil environments, is typically an opportunistic pathogen, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. Despite its low prevalence as a human pathogen, documented cases include urinary tract infections, acute cholecystitis, and sepsis. In contrast, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a coagulase and catalase-positive Gram-positive organism, is frequently associated with a spectrum of infections, ranging from skin infections to severe conditions such as pneumonia and endocardit

Keratitis Caused by Candida parapsilosis and Subsequent Corynebacterium macginleyi Infection: Case Report and Short Review.

Keratitis due to Candida parapsilosis or Corynebacterium macginleyi is uncommon. We present a patient with several risk factors who suffered two subsequent corneal infections caused by these pathogens and healed with topical conservative therapy. The important factor was the early detection of infection. Fluconazole solution administered topically as eye drops combined with regular debridement proved in this case a successful alternative to systemic antifungal treatment. With a perceived recurrence of the keratitis, one must take into account the involvement of other pathogens present. The pre

Postoperative deep wound dehiscence of thoracotomy with isolation of Corynebacterium tuberculostearicum: surgical site infection or colonization?

OBJECTIVE: Infections with Corynebacterium tuberculostearicum are very rare as in most of the cases its isolation is associated with tissue colonization rather than infection. CASE REPORT: An 80-year old female patient was sent to the consultation hour of thoracic surgery for evaluation of a symptomatic persistent unilateral pleural effusion of her right lung. The differential diagnosis included either the presence of a chronic pleural empyema or the presence of malignancy. After excluding a malignancy, a decortication of the middle and lower lobe was performed, as the two lobes could not sig

Reproductive Pathological Changes Associated with Experimental Subchronic Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis Infection in Nonpregnant Boer Does.

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis causes caseous lymphadenitis (CLA), which is a contagious and chronic disease in sheep and goats. In order to assess the histopathological changes observed in the reproductive organs of nonpregnant does infected with the bacteria, 20 apparently healthy adult Boer does were divided into four inoculation groups, intradermal, intranasal, oral, and control, consisting of five goats each. Excluding the control group, which was unexposed, other does were inoculated with 10(7) CFU/1 mL of live C. pseudotuberculosis through the various routes stated above. Thirty day

Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum as etiologic agent of human infections worldwide: a review of case reports within the last 40 years (1983-2023).

Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum has been increasingly reported as an etiologic agent of both community-acquired and nosocomial infections, despite its common presence as a harmless member of the human upper respiratory tract and skin microbiota. However, infections caused by C. pseudodiphtheriticum and other corynebacterial species are still frequently misclassified as contamination and overlooked during clinical and laboratory diagnoses in several countries. In this study, an extensive review of human infections and nosocomial outbreaks caused by C. pseudodiphtheriticum was conducted thr

A novel approach for an immunogen against Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection: An Escherichia coli bacterin expressing phospholipase D.

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is the causative agent of caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) in small ruminants. There is still needed an immunoprophylaxis model, which induces a protective and sustained immune response against the bacteria. In this study, we evaluated a recombinant Escherichia coli bacterin expressing the recombinant phospholipase D (rPLD) protein, the most relevant virulence factor of C. pseudotuberculosis, as a potential vaccine formulation. E. coli BL21 (DE3) Star strain was used for rPLD protein expression and was then inactivated by formaldehyde. Four groups with 10 Balb/c m

From contamination to infective endocarditis-a population-based retrospective study of Corynebacterium isolated from blood cultures.

Corynebacterium is a genus that can contaminate blood cultures and also cause severe infections like infective endocarditis (IE). Our purpose was to investigate microbiological and clinical features associated with contamination and true infection. A retrospective population-based study of Corynebacterium bacteremia 2012-2017 in southern Sweden was performed. Corynebacterium isolates were species determined using a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Patient were, from the medical records, classified as having true infection or contamina

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of chondroblastic osteosarcoma of the vertebral column complicated by Corynebacterium infection: a case report.

We describe a case of chondroblastic osteosarcoma of the vertebral column in a 67-yr-old male in whom the preoperative diagnosis was made by fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). This diagnosis was subsequently confirmed in the T8 corpectomy specimen. Although the smears of the aspirate revealed only occasional markedly atypical spindle-shaped nuclei, the cell block was diagnostic of malignancy. It showed a well-preserved fragment of neoplastic cartilage populated by markedly atypical hyperchromatic cells and a crushed fragment of anaplastic spindle-shaped cells surrounded by opaque collagenou
