Meso-macroporous hydrogel for direct litre-scale isolation of extracellular vesicles.

Extracellular vesicles are cell-originated lipid bilayer membrane vesicles that play vital roles in cell-to-cell communications. While extracellular vesicles hold substantial biomedical potential, conventional methodologies for isolating extracellular vesicles require elaborate preprocessing and, therefore, remain labour intensive and limited by throughput. To overcome these challenges, we present a facile fabrication route for generating a meso-macroporous hydrogel matrix with pores of ~400 nm for customizable extracellular vesicle isolation. By combining surface charge-selective capture of e

The Molecular Mechanism of Natural Products Activating Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling Pathway for Improving Hair Loss.

Hair loss, or alopecia, is a dermatological disorder that causes psychological stress and poor quality of life. Drug-based therapeutics such as finasteride and minoxidil have been clinically used to treat hair loss, but they have limitations due to their several side effects in patients. To solve this problem, there has been meaningful progress in elucidating the molecular mechanisms of hair growth and finding novel targets to develop therapeutics to treat it. Among various signaling pathways, Wnt/β-catenin plays an essential role in hair follicle development, the hair cycle, and regeneration.

The photoprotective activity of nutraceuticals.

Nutrition plays an important role in the treatment of many diseases, and the right choice of nutrients can help to prevent disorders and improve the quality of life. Epidemiologic studies suggest that there is a close relationship between ultraviolet exposure (high level of reactive oxygen species) and the intake of specific dietary factors (eg antioxidants), and the diminished risk of developing cancer, coronary heart disease, or cataracts. Free radicals and reactive oxygen species are synthesized endogenously (eg, in energy metabolism and the antimicrobial defense system of the body) or prod

Cosmeticorexia: What It Is, Where It Comes from, and Why It Matters.

Cosmeticorexia (also called dermorexia) refers to a culturally reinforced preoccupation or obsession with achieving "flawless" skin that can lead to excessive, age-inappropriate, or compulsive use of cosmetic products and procedures. The phenomenon is intensified by the medicalization of beauty, the growth of "cosmeceutical" markets, and social media platforms that reward routine-based content and appearance-focused self-presentation. Emerging signals indicate that exposure and uptake are happening at increasingly younger ages, raising concerns about irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, s

Beyond traditional cosmetics: exploring endophytic fungal-derived tyrosinase inhibitors.

Tyrosinase is a copper-containing monooxygenase that catalyzes the O-hydroxylation of tyrosine to 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine and subsequently to dopaquinone. The enzyme is essential for the formation of melanin in eukaryotes, and its over-activation is linked to hyperpigmentation, which is metabolically associated with severe clinical conditions. The most efficient way to regulate the overproduction of melanin and its harmful effects is to suppress tyrosinase. Endophytic fungi are of immense importance in producing the pharmacologically active and structurally diverse range of secondary metabo

Natural options for management of melasma, a review.

A blemish free, even-toned skin is universally associated with healthy skin. This reasoning makes people desire to have a flawless skin. Melanin is a naturally occurring pigment in humans. This pigment is responsible for skin, hair, and eye color, therefore determines our race and phenotypic appearance. On darker skin types, it is common that melanin production processes malfunctions. These malfunctions often lead to overproduction and secretion of melanin. As a result, unwanted pigmentary problems such melasma occur. Due to unknown etiology and its recurrence in nature, melasma is challenging
