Acoustic preference functions and song variability in the Hawaiian cricket Laupala cerasina.

Female preference functions for different sexual traits can differ significantly, from 'unimodal' to 'open ended'. Through the study of acoustic communication in anurans, several studies have reported an association between static (stereotyped) traits versus dynamic (variable) traits and preference function shape (unimodal versus open ended, respectively). Observing a similar pattern in a phylogenetically independent group would suggest that deterministic forces have caused a relationship between signal variability and preference function shape in acoustic signalling systems. We examined this

Cis-regulatory fragments from the dissatisfaction gene identify novel mating behavior neurons in female Drosophila.

During Drosophila courtship, males chase and sing to females, while females perform abdominal behaviors to indicate their willingness to mate. The nerve cord circuits in females that produce their abdominal behaviors are poorly characterized. We recently identified an anatomically diverse population of abdominal interneurons called the dissatisfaction (dsf)- and doublesex-expressing abdominal ganglion (DDAG) neurons that influence several female mating behaviors. Here, we searched the dsf locus for cis-regulatory enhancer fragments that regulate its spatial expression in the adult and larval c

Optimizing irradiation dose for Drosophila melanogaster males to enhance heterospecific Sterile Insect Technique (h-SIT) against Drosophila suzukii.

The spotted-wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii), a highly invasive agricultural pest, poses significant challenges to fruit production worldwide. Traditional chemical control methods are costly and raise concerns about resistance and environmental sustainability. The Heterospecific Sterile Insect Technique (h-SIT) has emerged as a promising alternative. Sterile heterospecific males (Drosophila melanogaster) can be used to suppress D. suzukii populations through reproductive interference, primarily mediated by post-zygotic isolation mechanisms. Although this approach ensures the absence of via

The effects of different PMSG doses on estrus behavior and pregnancy rate in Angora goats.

Artificial insemination protocols depend on efficient behavioral estrus detection and insemination time in Angora goat. Therefore, we aim to determine the accuracy of an estrus scoring system in Angora goats with different PMSG doses during the breeding season. Does (n: 260) were randomly divided into three groups: group-1 (n: 93), group-2 (n: 85) and group-3 (n: 82). All animals received an intravaginal sponge on day 0 for 11 days, and on the day of sponge insertion 150 μg prostaglandin F2Α was administered. Pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin was injected 300, 400 and 500 IU intramuscularly 2

Sexual dysfunction precedes motor defects, dopaminergic neuronal degeneration, and impaired dopamine metabolism: Insights from Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease.

Sexual dysfunction (SD) is one of the most common non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) and remains the most neglected, under-reported, and under-recognized aspect of PD. Studies have shown that Dopamine (DA) in the hypothalamus plays a role in regulating sexual behavior. But the detailed mechanism of SD in PD is not known. Drosophila melanogaster shares several genes and signaling pathways with humans which makes it an ideal model for the study of a neurodegenerative disorder such as PD. Courtship behavior of Drosophila is one such behavior that is closely related to human sexual beh

Lady in Red: Hormonal Predictors of Women's Clothing Choices.

Recent evidence supports the idea that women use red clothing as a courtship tactic, and results from one study further suggested that women were more likely to wear red on days of high fertility in their menstrual cycles. Subsequent studies provided mixed support for the cycle-phase effect, although all such studies relied on counting methods of cycle-phase estimation and used between-subjects designs. By comparison, in the study reported here, we employed frequent hormone sampling to more accurately assess ovulatory timing and used a within-subjects design. We found that women were more like

Organ-specific splice variants of aquaporin water channel AgAQP1 in the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae.

BACKGROUND: Aquaporin (AQP) water channels are important for water homeostasis in all organisms. Malaria transmission is dependent on Anopheles mosquitoes. Water balance is a major factor influencing mosquito survival, which may indirectly affect pathogen transmission. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We obtained full-length mRNA sequences for Anopheles gambiae aquaporin 1 (AgAQP1) and identified two splice variants for the gene. In vitro expression analysis showed that both variants transported water and were inhibited by Hg(2+). One splice variant (AgAQP1A) was exclusively expressed in adult

Criterion-related validity of a phallometric test for paraphilic rape and sadism.

Eight men admitting to sadistic fantasies or urges (fantasizers), 7 sadistic rapists (sadists), 14 nonsadistic rapists, 31 courtship-disordered men (men displaying exhibitionism, voyeurism, frotteurism, or a combination of these paraphilias), and 20 community controls were compared on their relative phallometric responses to stimuli depicting rape, violent rape, and nonsexual violence. This study extended previous research by including a group of men who admitted to having sadistic fantasies or urges, in contrast to rapists who are likely to deny any such interests because of possible legal or

Analyses of head and thorax in Eupomphini (Meloidae) suggest that complex behaviors are not associated to changes in general shape.

Our results reject an association between general shape of head and thorax with defensive and courtship behaviors in the studied Eupomphini blister beetles. Instead we found that shape of thorax and head radiated in all directions of the morphospace. We also identified a radical separation between two lineages that could represent future evolutionary constraints for thorax evolution.

Acute alcohol exposure induces reproductive behavior defects, subfertility, brain transcriptomic changes of parental zebrafish and malformation in their offspring.

Alcohol is a prevalent addictive substance and the consequences of alcohol abuse pose a significant public health concern. Despite its prevalence and pervasiveness in the modern world, the underlying mechanisms mediating alcohol's deleterious effects on vertebrate reproductive behaviors remain poorly understood due to its complex pharmacology. Using adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model, we investigated the effects of 40-minute acute alcohol exposure (0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75% vol/vol) on reproductive behaviors, fecundity, offspring development, and brain transcriptomes. Results show that acute a

Evolutionary differentiation of androgen receptor is responsible for sexual characteristic development in a teleost fish.

Teleost fishes exhibit complex sexual characteristics in response to androgens, such as fin enlargement and courtship display. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying their evolutionary acquisition remain largely unknown. To address this question, we analyse medaka (Oryzias latipes) mutants deficient in teleost-specific androgen receptor ohnologs (ara and arb). We discovered that neither ar ohnolog was required for spermatogenesis, whilst they appear to be functionally redundant for the courtship display in males. However, both were required for reproductive success: ara for tooth enlarge

Incomplete premating and postmating reproductive barriers between two parapatric populations of a social spider mite.

Closely related species with overlapping distributions often show premating reproductive barriers to avoid hybridization. Stigmaeopsis miscanthi (Saito) is a social spider mite infesting Chinese silver grass, and the species consists of two parapatric groups with frequent contacts within the contact zone. They differ in male-male aggressiveness, male morphology, female diapause traits, and life history parameters. There is incomplete but strong post-mating reproductive isolation between the two groups, and their DNA sequences are slightly different, suggesting that they diverged recently. In t

Cutaneous application of an accessory-gland secretion after sperm exchange in a terrestrial slug (Mollusca: Pulmonata).

Competition for fertilisation in hermaphroditic animals seems to have led to many odd behaviours and complex morphologies involved in the transfer of accessory-gland products to the partner. Terrestrial slugs of the genus Deroceras show remarkably elaborate and interspecifically diverse penis morphologies and mating behaviours. Most species have an appending penial gland, which in Deroceras panormitanum consists of a few long fingers that are everted after sperm exchange and laid onto the partner's back. To investigate whether this gland transfers a secretion onto the partner's skin, we killed

Sex chromosomes and chromosomal rearrangements contribute to behavioral sexual isolation in Jaera albifrons marine isopods.

We focus on the evolution of behavioral sexual isolation through the empirical study of two marine isopod species. The males of Jaera albifrons and Jaera praehirsuta engage females in tactile courtship by brushing the female's back, but they do so with divergent sets of specialized setae, and female choice results in strong reproductive isolation. Using RADseq-derived genotypes of individuals from natural populations and controlled crosses, we found that secondary contacts between J. albifrons and J. praehirsuta resulted in different levels of heterospecific gene flow. Comparison of the genomi

Effects of midbrain lesions on lordosis and ultrasound production.

Previous studies suggest the control of lordosis by competing neural systems. A lordosis-inhibiting system is thought to originate in the lateral septum (LS) or preoptic area (POA) and project to midbrain sites, including the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and ventral half of the periaqueductal gray (vPAG). A lordosis-facilitating system is thought to originate in the ventromedial hypothalamus and project to the dorsal half of the PAG (dPAG). To test the generality of this model, we subjected female hamsters to control operations or lesions of the dPAG, vPAG or VTA. Subjects in hormone-induced e

The Role of Cuticular Hydrocarbons in the Intraspecific Sexual Recognition Of Cyclocephala barrerai (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae).

A mixture of hydrocarbons of different molecular weights covers the Coleoptera cuticle, protecting the insects from desiccation and, in some cases, providing information about their physiological state. Courtship and mating in Cyclocephala barrerai Martínez begin when the male's antennae touch the female's thorax and elytra. The male antennae of C. barrerai have sensilla that detect hydrocarbons; however, the role of these compounds in the mating behavior of this beetle species remains unknown. Here, we analyzed the behavioral responses of both sexes of C. barrerai to conspecific cuticular hyd

Same-Sex Sexual Behavior in Invertebrates: A Systematic Synthesis of Prevalence, Study Type, and Interpretation.

Same-sex sexual behavior in invertebrates includes interactions such as courtship, mounting, copulation, tandem running, and pair formation between individuals of the same sex. We conducted a systematic synthesis of 222 primary studies and 12 reviews and found published evidence of SSB in approximately 207 species spanning arthropods, mollusks, annelids, echinoderms, nematodes, and flatworms. Although most reports involved insects (approximately 89%), standardized reporting rates suggest this bias reflects research effort rather than true biological prevalence. Observations came from field stu

Acute heat exposure induces lifetime shifts in non-fertilising sperm allocation in a sperm-heteromorphic insect.

Ectotherm reproduction is vulnerable to acute heat stress, yet the longitudinal impacts of transient thermal events on male reproduction remain poorly understood. Using the stored-product pest Plodia interpunctella, a sperm-heteromorphic moth, we investigated how acute thermal stress (4 h at 40°C) impacts males' lifetime reproductive resource allocation and offspring fitness. Heat-exposed adult males and controls (26°C) were paired daily with non-stressed females. We found that transient heat stress did not significantly impact pre-courtship duration, courtship duration, copulation latency, lo

Comparison of the effects of atypical antipsychotics on decreased libido in zebrafish and their mechanisms.

Antipsychotic-induced decreased libido is a common clinical concern, yet drug-specific differences and their underlying neurobiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. We chronically exposed adult male zebrafish to risperidone (RIS), olanzapine (OLZ), quetiapine (QTP), or aripiprazole (ARP) to evaluate their effects on courtship behavior. Brain and testicular transcripts related to the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, kisspeptin, and monoamine receptors, along with systemic 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) concentrations, were subsequently analyzed. Neurotoxic protein expression reveals connections between the circadian clock and mating behavior in Drosophila.

To investigate the functions of circadian neurons, we added two strategies to the standard Drosophila behavioral genetics repertoire. The first was to express a polyglutamine-expanded neurotoxic protein (MJDtr78Q; MJD, Machado-Joseph disease) in the major timeless (tim)-expressing cells of the adult brain. These Tim-MJD flies were viable, in contrast to the use of cell-death gene expression for tim neuron inactivation. Moreover, they were more arrhythmic than flies expressing other neurotoxins and had low but detectable tim mRNA levels. The second extended standard microarray technology from f
