The aim of the study is to appraise the prevalence of the mild defects of the spine or paramorphysm in a normal paediatric population, without orthopaedic pathology, and to verify the possible association with the dysfunctions of the dental apparatus. The recovery of a real association among these pathologies could furnish a sprout for a correct therapeutic approach. In the study 428 subjects (211 females and 217 males), aged 9 to 14 years, have been analyzed. The data have been recorded on special schedules, orthopaedic and orthodontic, containing the number of progressive order and the initi

There has been a recent recrudescence of cranio-mandibular disorders (CMD), predominantly affecting women. Even children can be affected by CMD, often under diagnoses by their families and by medical professionals. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach is important when evaluating the variety of diagnostic and etiological problems. The search for postural etiology, whether lingual or dental, is always necessary to better act on the etiology of these disorders. The involvement of orthodontics, in the prevention of CMD, has three impacts: functional, aesthetic and psychological, allowing for a

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this systematic review is to assess the evidence of association of cervical spine signs and symptoms with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). This will help to lend credence to mechanisms supporting the association in order to improve care strategies for this condition.
INTRODUCTION: The association of cervical spine impairments (in relation to neck posture, cervical spine mobility, muscle tenderness, muscle activity, and neck disability) with TMD has been widely discussed in the literature. Clarification of this relationship is important for health professionals to

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder refers to a cluster of conditions characterized by pain in the TMJ or its surrounding tissues, functional limitations of the mandible, or clicking in the TMJ during motion. The TMJ is a bilateral synovial joint on both sides of the craniomandibular complex, involved in chewing, swallowing, speech, and other automatic movements such as yawning, grinding, or clenching. A total of 10 patients with TMJ dysfunction were included in this case series, and all were diagnosed and referred by a dentist. Physical examination was carried out by the therapist to check

BACKGROUND: For patients whose centric relation (CR) has not been considered at the start and during treatment, the task of achieving an occlusal scheme that works together with the temporomandibular joint, the muscles, and the structures of the stomatognathic apparatus becomes a major concern.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe a reproducible, predictable and to date unreported procedure of selective grinding guided by an occlusal splint and to analyze condylar position (CP) based on the skeletal pattern.
METHODS: A total of 72 symptomatic patients (38 females and 34 males) were classif

Nearly 5% of the the world's population has temporomandibular disorder (TMD) severe enough to make them seek treatment. A third of the total population has at least one TMD symptom. There are different types of splints to treat TMD. In our study, we compared the success of two different appliances [stabilization splint (ss), nociceptive trigeminal inhibition splint (NTI)] by using Fonseca's questionnaire, the OHQoL-UK and visual analog scale (VAS). A total of 40 patients suffering from TMD were included in this study and answered questionnaires twice, at the beginning of the treatment and 3 mo

A study was undertaken to examine the relationship between the clinical signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and computed tomographic (CT) evidence of destruction of these joints in children afflicted with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). A thorough clinical examination including determination of the craniomandibular index (CMI) was performed on each of 37 consecutive JRA patients (6-17 years old), who had also received comprehensive evaluations of TMJ morphology by axial CT (see Part I, Pediatr Dent, 17:46-53, 1995). Measures of facial asymmetry (photographic) and

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of nocturnal bruxism, the characteristics of bruxofacets, and the reduction of symptoms in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients. The study involved the observation of bruxofacets on a stabilization splint. Twenty-six patients (22 women and 4 men, 16-54 years of age) with signs and symptoms of TMD were given an initial examination before using a splint, and then at intervals of one, three, six and ten weeks after a stabilization splint was first used. In 88% of the patients (n = 23) active shiny facets or scratches caused by noctu

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a type of orofacial pain that can originate from a number of craniofacial mandibular structures. These include the TM joints, the muscles of mastication, related nerves, tendons, ligaments, bones and teeth. Symptoms include impaired jaw function, TM joint noises and pain, limited opening, often with jaw deviations or deflections to the affected side. Temporal tendinitis is a disorder of the fibrous insertion of the temporalis muscle tendons on the coronoid process of the mandible that is characterized by both inflammation and degeneration. Sometimes, tempora

The prevalence of oromandibular dysfunction was studied in 735 subjects from a random sample population of 1,000 subjects aged 25 to 64 years. A diagnosis of oromandibular dysfunction was based on criteria established by the International Headache Society, as a subgroup to tension-type headache. Tenderness in pericranial or jaw muscles was not included. The most common symptoms were clenching (22%) and grinding of teeth (15%). The most common sign was irregular jaw movements on opening and closing (29%). The ratio of men to women for most symptoms and signs ranged from 2:3 to 1:3. This study s

Introduction: The revised Ghent nosology presents the classical features of Marfan syndrome. However, behind its familiar face, Marfan syndrome hides less well-known features.Areas covered: The German Marfan Organization listed unusual symptoms and clinical experts reviewed the literature on clinical features of Marfan syndrome not listed in the Ghent nosology. Thereby we identified the following features: (1) bicuspid aortic valve, mitral valve prolapse, pulmonary valve prolapse, tricuspid valve prolapse, (2) heart failure and cardiomyopathy, (3) supraventricular arrhythmia, ventricular arrhy
