Irritant dermatitis from tri-butyl tin oxide and contact allergy from chlorocresol.

A shipwright developed a delayed bullous irritant dermatitis from contact with a bis-tri-butyl tin oxide (TBTO) containing antifouling paint. He subsequently developed sensitization to 4-chloro-m-cresol, a constituent of a steroid cream. No cross sensitivity to 4-chloro-3,5 xylenol was seen. Low concentrations of 4-chloro-m-cresol in pet. may elicit a true positive reaction. TBTO is a strong irritant which will produce delayed bullous reactions in industrial use and on patch testing at 0.1% aqueous.

Investigation of a targeted panel of gut microbiome-derived toxins in children with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: The gut-kidney axis is implicated in chronic kidney disease (CKD) morbidity. We describe how a panel of gut microbiome-derived toxins relates to kidney function and neurocognitive outcomes in children with CKD, consisting of indoleacetate, 3-indoxylsulfate, p-cresol glucuronide, p-cresol sulfate, and phenylacetylglutamine. METHODS: The Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKiD) cohort is a North American multicenter prospective cohort that enrolled children aged 6 months to 16 years with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) 30-89 ml/min/1.73 m2. Data from the 2-year study vi

Evidence for impaired assimilation of protein in chronic renal failure.

BACKGROUND: Protein malnutrition is a common finding in chronic renal failure (CRF) and is associated with poor outcome. We hypothesized that besides inadequate dietary protein intake and alterations in metabolism, deficient protein assimilation (digestion and absorption) might contribute to the pathogenesis of protein malnutrition in uremia. METHODS: Protein assimilation was evaluated in 64 healthy volunteers and 119 CRF patients by means of a 13C protein breath test and/or quantification of p-cresol in a 24-hour urine collection. Both approaches provide reliable information on the efficienc

Molecular Mechanism of Antimicrobial Excipient-Induced Aggregation in Parenteral Formulations of Peptide Therapeutics.

Antimicrobial preservatives are used as functional excipients in multidose formulations of biological therapeutics to destroy or inhibit the growth of microbial contaminants, which may be introduced by repeatedly administering doses. Antimicrobial agents can also induce the biophysical instability of proteins and peptides, which presents a challenge in optimizing the drug product formulation. Elucidating the structural basis for aggregation aids in understanding the underlying mechanism and can offer valuable knowledge and rationale for designing drug substances and drug products; however, thi

Potential Biomarkers for Early Detection of 3-MCPD Dipalmitate Exposure in Sprague-Dawley Rats.

3-Chloro-1,2-propandiol (3-MCPD) dipalmitate is one of the major 3-MCPD esters formed during food processing. In this single-dose study, the metabonomic profile changes in the 48 h after orally administrated 3-MCPD dipalmitate at 1600 mg/kg BW to Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were determined with liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) system. The chemical structures of 12 potential biomarkers for 3-MCPD dipalmitate exposures early detection were detected and tentatively identified from the plasma of SD rats, including indoxyl sulfate, phenol sulfate, p-cresol sulfate, 2-phen

Effect of slurry treatment approaches on the reduction of major odorant emissions at a hog barn facility in South Korea.

The characteristics of malodor released from piggery excreta samples were investigated by measuring their emission concentrations both before and after such treatments as composting or aeration from field sites. These samples were then collected from field sites and brought into the lab for analysis with the aid of the dynamic flux chamber method. The dominating compounds in the emissions were reduced sulfur compounds, phenol, and indole. The results were examined in terms of two key odor indices: odor intensity (OI) and odor activity values (OAVs), after being grouped by some criteria. When t

Value of urinary simple phenol and indican determinations in the diagnosis of the stagnant loop syndrome.

The urinary excretion of phenol, p-cresol, and indican was determined in 7 patients with the stagnant loop syndrome, 26 patients with coeliac disease, chronic pancreatitis, and partial gastrectomy, and 18 control patients. The mean excretion of the compounds in the patients with the stagnant loop syndrome and in the control patients, respectively, was 77 and 2.3 mg/24 h of phenol (p less than 0.05), 164 and 39.5 mg/24 h of p-cresol (n.s.), and 369 and 41.5 mg/24 h of indican (p less than 0.01). When applied as diagnostic tests for the stagnant loop syndrome, the phenol excretion showed 2 false

The integration of cyanide hydratase and tyrosinase catalysts enables effective degradation of cyanide and phenol in coking wastewaters.

The aim of this study was to design an effective method for the bioremediation of coking wastewaters, specifically for the concurrent elimination of their highly toxic components - cyanide and phenols. Almost full degradation of free cyanide (0.32-20 mM; 8.3-520 mg L(-1)) in the model and the real coking wastewaters was achieved by using a recombinant cyanide hydratase in the first step. The removal of cyanide, a strong inhibitor of tyrosinase, enabled an effective degradation of phenols by this enzyme in the second step. Phenol (16.5 mM, 1,552 mg L(-1)) was completely removed from a real coki

Metabolic Communication by SGLT2 Inhibition.

BACKGROUND: SGLT2 (sodium-glucose cotransporter 2) inhibitors (SGLT2i) can protect the kidneys and heart, but the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. METHODS: To gain insights on primary effects of SGLT2i that are not confounded by pathophysiologic processes or are secondary to improvement by SGLT2i, we performed an in-depth proteomics, phosphoproteomics, and metabolomics analysis by integrating signatures from multiple metabolic organs and body fluids after 1 week of SGLT2i treatment of nondiabetic as well as diabetic mice with early and uncomplicated hyperglycemia. RESULTS: Kid

Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome through the lens of gut‑derived uremic toxins.

Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) syndrome represents a complex, interconnected cluster of cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and metabolic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. These conditions share overlapping metabolic, inflammatory, and vascular pathways, with the gut microbiome increasingly recognised as a key contributor and common underlying risk factor. Uremic toxins, traditionally considered waste products of host and microbial metabolism, are now recognised as active mediators of tissue damage across the CKM spectrum, particularly in the context of impaired

The enhancement of the biodegradability of phenolic solution using preozonation based on high ozone utilization.

In this research, the effects of preozonation on the biodegradability of 4-cresol, 4-nitrophenol and 2-chlorophenol solutions were investigated using a new gas-inducing reactor with high ozone utilization rate. The extent of preozonation may be monitored by determining the characteristic ozonation behaviors of preozonized phenolic solutions, such as residual phenolic concentration, ADMI value and ozone gas outlet concentration. Experimental results showed that as the initial phenolic compounds decomposed completely, the ozone gas outlet concentration rapidly increases. In addition, at pH 7, a

Digestion-resistant proteins support the healthy metabolite profiles associated with plant-based diets.

Plant-based diets are associated with both positive health outcomes and a diverse gut microbiome. Such diets alter the microbiome's metabolic outputs, including increasing phenylalanine-derived phenols associated with beneficial health outcomes (hippuric acid and 3-phenylpropionate), while decreasing tyrosine-derived phenols considered uremic toxins (phenol sulfate and p-cresol sulfate). The mechanisms linking plant eating to these phenol metabolites are not known. Plant-based foods are fiber and phytochemical rich. They also contain proteins that are resistant to host digestion and thus reach

Anaerobic degradation of phenol by pure cultures of newly isolated denitrifying pseudomonads.

From various oxic or anoxic habitats several strains of bacteria were isolated which in the absence of molecular oxygen oxidized phenol to CO2 with nitrate as the terminal electron acceptor. All strains grew in defined mineral salts medium; two of them were further characterized. The bacteria were facultatively anaerobic Gram-negative rods; metabolism was strictly oxidative with molecular oxygen, nitrate, or nitrite as electron acceptor. The isolates were tentatively identified as pseudomonads. Besides phenol many other benzene derivatives like cresols or aromatic acids were anaerobically oxid

Effects of antimicrobial preservatives on protein folding stability and subvisible particle formation in monoclonal antibody trastuzumab.

To prevent microbial contamination, antimicrobial preservatives need to be added in multi-dose biopharmaceuticals; however, it often introduces risks to protein stability, potentially compromising therapeutic efficacy. In this study, we investigated the effects of different preservatives (benzyl alcohol, m-cresol, phenoxyethanol, and benzalkonium chloride) on the biophysical stability of trastuzumab, a monoclonal antibody widely used for treatment of HER2 receptor-positive cancers. Among the preservatives tested, benzyl alcohol (1.0 % v/v) and m-cresol (0.3 % w/v) significantly reduced the mon

Inhibition of Acetylcholinesterase by Wood Creosote and Simple Phenolic Compounds.

Anisakiasis is common in countries where raw or incompletely cooked marine fish are consumed. Currently, effective therapeutic methods to treat anisakiasis are unavailable. A recent study found that wood creosote inactivates the movement of Anisakis species. Essential oil of Origanum compactum containing carvacrol and thymol, which are similar to the constituents of wood creosote, was reported to inactivate Anisakis by inhibiting its acetylcholinesterase. We examined whether wood creosote can also inhibit acetylcholinesterase. We examined the effect of components of wood creosote using the sam

Crystal structures and spectroscopic properties of polycyano-polycadmate host clathrates including a CT complex guest of methylviologen dication and aromatic donor.

A series of polycyano-polycadmate (PCPC) host clathrates including a CT complex of methylviologen dication (MV2+) and an aromatic donor as a guest were synthesized, and their crystal structures and spectroscopic properties were investigated. The PCPC host has a framework structure built with Cd2+ ions as coordination centres and cyanides as bridging ligands. This framework host has negative charge and includes a cationic guest together with an ordinary neutral guest. MV2+, which is a strong acceptor, was included as a cationic guest and an aromatic compound, which works as a donor, was include

Ultrasonic and IR study of intermolecular association through hydrogen bonding in ternary liquid mixtures.

Complex formation in ternary liquid mixtures of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) with phenol and o-cresol in carbontetrachloride has been studied by measuring ultrasonic velocity at 2 MHz, in the concentration range of 0.019-0.162 (in mole fraction of DMSO) at varying temperatures of 20, 30 and 40 degrees C. Using measured values of ultrasonic velocity, other parameters such as adiabatic compressibility, intermolecular free length, molar sound velocity, molar compressibility, specific acoustic impedance and molar volume have been evaluated. These parameters have been utilized to study the solute-solut

Reaction Steps in Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Oxidation of Toluene in Gas Phase-A Review.

A review of the current literature shows there is no clear consensus regarding the reaction mechanisms of air-borne aromatic compounds such as toluene by photocatalytic oxidation. Potential oxidation reactions over TiO2 or TiO2-based catalysts under ultraviolet and visible (UV/VIS) illumination are most commonly considered for removal of these pollutants. Along the pathways from a model pollutant, toluene, to final mineralization products (CO2 and H2O), the formation of several intermediates via specific reactions include parallel oxidation reactions and formation of less-reactive intermediate

Biodegradation of trichloroethylene and involvement of an aromatic biodegradative pathway.

Biodegradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) by bacterial strain G4 resulted in complete dechlorination of the compound, as indicated by the production of inorganic chloride. A component of the water from which strain G4 was isolated that was required for TCE degradation was identified as phenol. Strain G4 degraded TCE in the presence of chloramphenicol only when preinduced with phenol. Toluene, o-cresol. and m-cresol could replace the phenol requirement. Two of the inducers of TCE metabolism, phenol and toluene, apparently induced the same aromatic degradative pathway that cleaved the aromatic r
