A conceptual analysis of SBIRT implementation alongside the continuum of PrEP awareness: domains of fit and feasibility.

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is a supplementary intervention that can be incorporated into the Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Care Continuum, complementing initiatives and endeavors focused on Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention in clinical care and community-based work. Referencing the Transtheoretical Model of Change and the PrEP Awareness Continuum, this conceptual analysis highlights how SBIRT amplifies ongoing HIV prevention initiatives and presents a distinct chance to address identified gaps. SBIRT's mechanisms show promise of fit and feasi

Three-year trajectories of alcohol use among at-risk and among low-risk drinkers in a general population sample of adults: A latent class growth analysis of a brief intervention trial.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed trajectories of alcohol use in the general population, and even fewer studies have assessed the impact of brief intervention on the trajectories. Especially for low-risk drinkers, it is unclear what trajectories occur, whether they benefit from intervention, and if so, when and how long. The aims were first, to identify alcohol use trajectories among at-risk and among low-risk drinkers, second, to explore potential effects of brief alcohol intervention and, third, to identify predictors of trajectories. METHODS: Adults aged 18-64 years were screened for a

The Relationship Between Drinking Behavior and Conversational Processes During a Brief Alcohol Reduction Intervention for People with HIV.

People with HIV (PWH) frequently engage in unhealthy alcohol use, which can adversely affect antiretroviral adherence and HIV disease progression. Brief interventions based on Motivational Interviewing (MI), including the Brief Negotiated Interview (BNI), can help to reduce drinking. This study examines MI processes observed during a single 15-20 min BNI session delivered by social workers to PWH with unhealthy alcohol use (N = 59) in the context of a stepped care intervention to reduce alcohol consumption. BNI sessions were coded for technical and relational processes encouraged in MI, such a

Changes in secondary outcomes associated with brief interventions for problem gambling in methadone patients.

BACKGROUND: Patients in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) with problem gambling (PG) experience worse psychosocial outcomes than their non-PG counterparts. Interventions targeting PG in MMT may enhance psychosocial functioning beyond gambling reduction and abstinence. The present study was a secondary data analysis that examined the trajectories of non-gambling outcomes of three brief PG interventions (i.e., brief psychoeducation, brief advice, motivational enhancement therapy plus cognitive-behavioral therapy [MET + CBT]) among MMT patients. METHODS: Participants (N = 109) were engaged i

Adapting and Implementing Open Dialogue in the Scandinavian Countries: A Scoping Review.

Open Dialogue is a resource-oriented mental health approach, which mobilises a crisis-struck person's psychosocial network resources. This scoping review 1) identifies the range and nature of literature on the adoption of Open Dialogue in Scandinavia in places other than the original sites in Finland, and 2) summarises this literature. We included 33 publications. Most studies in this scoping review were published as "grey" literature and most grappled with how to implement Open Dialogue faithfully. In the Scandinavian research context, Open Dialogue was mainly described as a promising and fav

De-escalation techniques for psychosis-induced aggression or agitation.

BACKGROUND: Aggression is a disposition, a willingness to inflict harm, regardless of whether this is behaviourally or verbally expressed and regardless of whether physical harm is sustained.De-escalation is a psychosocial intervention for managing people with disturbed or aggressive behaviour. Secondary management strategies such as rapid tranquillisation, physical intervention and seclusion should only be considered once de-escalation and other strategies have failed to calm the service user. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of de-escalation techniques in the short-term management of

Building the Behavioral Health Crisis Response Workforce.

In the past 5 years, significant federal, state, and local efforts have focused on building behavioral health crisis response services and on shifting this responsibility away from law enforcement. However, these efforts have been hampered by limitations of the behavioral health workforce. Strategies are needed to expand the workforce and to ensure that crisis responders have the competencies and skills necessary to meet the needs of the individuals they serve. Existing federal, state, and local mechanisms can be leveraged to support the development of this workforce. This effort includes inve

Evaluating the efficiency of one stop crisis centres in managing domestic violence cases.

INTRODUCTION: As domestic violence (DV) poses a critical threat to public health worldwide, this prompts the need for efficient and effective intervention. In Malaysia, although One Stop Crisis Centres (OSCCs) have been offering multisectoral services to DV victims for many decades, an evaluation of the efficiency of these centres has yet to be conducted. This study aimed to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of three Malaysian OSCCs using a two-stage Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 153 adult DV victims were recruited from OSCCs in Sarawak Gene

Mental Health Apps and Crisis Support: Exploring the Impact of 988.

OBJECTIVE: Mental health apps continue to grow in popularity. However, although these apps offer many benefits, they are not equipped to manage mental health crises alone, and they often refer users to external resources. In 2022, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline was officially recognized as the U.S. national standard suicide hotline. This naturalistic experimental study aimed to assess the crisis resources offered within these apps as well as their responsiveness to implementation of national guidelines. METHODS: The authors conducted a thorough search of the mental health app marketplace

Predictors of Effects in Brief Psychiatric Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder.

If evidence points to the equal efficacy of all bona fide treatments for borderline personality disorder (BPD) in general, it may not necessarily be true for a specific individual, nor do such general conclusions help in the triage of clients in clinical services. We investigated potential therapy outcome predictors for participants with a BPD diagnosis (N = 99). They were assessed on scales including the Outcome Questionnaire-45.2 (OQ-45), the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-64, and the Borderline Symptom List. Our analyses revealed that individuals with low levels of symptom distress at

Feasibility and acceptability of a brief intervention to improve mild traumatic brain injury recovery: Problem-solving training-concussion.

OBJECTIVE: Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) are common among Veterans. Although the majority of neurobehavioral symptoms resolve following mTBI, studies with Veteran samples demonstrate a high frequency and chronicity of neurobehavioral complaints (e.g., difficulties with attention, frustration tolerance) often attributed to mTBI. Recent opinions suggest the primacy of mental health treatment, and existing mTBI practice guidelines promote patient-centered intervention beginning in primary care (PC). However, trial evidence regarding effective clinical management in PC is lacking. This stu

Testing a Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) interdisciplinary training program model for higher education systems.

INTRODUCTION: An estimated 21 million Americans meet the criteria for a substance use disorder (SUD), whereas 24% of the population engages in risky alcohol use leading to tremendous health and economic impacts (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2017). Opioid misuse is a national public health emergency, with an estimated 46,802 opioid-related deaths occurring in 2018 (National Center for Health Statistics, 2020). Despite the high prevalence of risky substance use and SUDs, preservice education related to screening for and treating SUDs in health and behavioral health

Young people's experiences of brief inpatient treatment for anorexia nervosa.

AIM: To understand the experiences of young people with anorexia admitted to hospital for brief stays and to inform the design of contemporary inpatient treatment to better suit their needs in the context of a significant shift in practice from longer hospital admissions to shorter stays. METHODS: A qualitative study was undertaken with young people within a few months of discharge from a specialist inpatient eating disorder service, Auckland, New Zealand. Audiotaped, semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants within a few months of their discharge from hospital and transcrib

Crisis Phones - Suicide Prevention Versus Suggestion/Contagion Effects.

BACKGROUND: There has been no systematic work on the short- or long-term impact of the installation of crisis phones on suicides from bridges. The present study addresses this issue. METHOD: Data refer to 219 suicides from 1954 through 2013 on the Skyway Bridge in St. Petersburg, Florida. Six crisis phones with signs were installed in July 1999. RESULTS: In the first decade after installation, the phones were used by 27 suicidal persons and credited with preventing 26 or 2.6 suicides a year. However, the net suicide count increased from 48 in the 13 years before installation of phones to 106

[The role of caregivers in crisis day treatment programs for adolescents: Limits in the service of care].

Program 10-15 is a crisis day hospital for adolescents. Its operations are inspired by institutional psychiatry and the systemic approach. This article describes the use of institutional, educational, and relational boundaries in their role as a source of containment and for therapeutic purposes. Through the presentation of a clinical case study, it illustrates the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork in using boundaries as a therapeutic tool. Opportunities for reflection and sharing within the team are described as necessary to prevent the blurring of professional identities and burnout.

Co-responding to mental health issues within the policing, health and social care services in the 21st century: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The Community Access Support Team is an initiative aimed at improving crisis response for people facing mental health challenges or trauma. It brings together policing, health and social care in a co-response team that offers compassionate, timely support, reducing the need for risk and emergency department visits. Co-responding has three core elements namely specialised call handling, a joint police mental health team, and a community support hub for follow-up care. This scoping review, which follows the JBI Methodological Framework, aims to explore and map the extent, range and n

Improving Nurses' Attitudes Toward Substance Use Disorder: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment.

Patients with substance use disorder (SUD) encounter many barriers to healthcare, including negative attitudes of healthcare personnel. Compared with other healthcare professions, nurses have been reported as having less tolerant attitudes toward patients with SUD. Knowledge acquisition combined with role support has been shown to improve therapeutic attitudes of nurses toward patients with SUD. Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based educational intervention aimed to improve the outcomes of patients at risk and with SUD. SBIRT education has been s

Investigating for Whom Brief Substance Use Interventions Are Most Effective: An Individual Participant Data Meta-analysis.

Prior research suggests that brief interventions (BIs) for alcohol and other drug use may vary in effectiveness across patient sociodemographic factors. The objective of this individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis was to explore for whom BIs delivered in general healthcare settings are more or less effective. We examined variability in BI effects by patient age, sex, employment, education, relationship status, and baseline severity of substance use using a two-stage IPD meta-analysis approach. All trials included in a parent aggregate data meta-analysis (k = 116) were invited to contr

Brief alcohol interventions for young adults: Strengthening effects, disentangling mechanisms, and scaling up for impact.

OBJECTIVE: Young adulthood is a developmentally risky period for hazardous or high-intensity alcohol consumption that can progress to an alcohol use disorder (AUD). Brief interventions offer one promising approach for reducing alcohol consumption and related harms among young adults. However, there are numerous methodological and theoretical challenges associated with optimizing intervention design, identifying mechanisms of action, understanding individual and contextual moderators of effects, and scaling up these interventions for widespread implementation and utilization. The current articl
