Eco-evolutionary agriculture: Host-pathogen dynamics in crop rotations.

Since its origins, thousands of years ago, agriculture has been challenged by the presence of evolving plant pathogens. Temporal rotations of host and non-host crops have helped farmers to control epidemics among other utilities, but further efforts for strategy assessment are needed. Here, we present a methodology for developing crop rotation strategies optimal for control of pathogens informed by numerical simulations of eco-evolutionary dynamics in one field. This approach can integrate agronomic criteria used in crop rotations-soil quality and cash yield-and the analysis of pathogen evolut

Research on the impact of climate change on food production resilience in China.

Climate polarization threatens the food production stabilization and economic development worldwide. As a major agricultural producer, China faces increasing risks to its food security. This study examines the effects of accumulated temperature and precipitation anomaly level on food production resilience, with crop diversity potentially playing a moderating role. To this end, it uses fixed-effects and moderating-effects models based on official statistics from 31 Chinese administrative regions (2010-2022). First, China's overall resilience in food production has shown an upward trend, fluctua

Crops and rising atmospheric CO2: friends or foes?

Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) is a ubiquitous global change with direct and indirect impacts on crops. The increase in atmospheric [CO2] since the industrial revolution has stimulated photosynthesis in crops and reduced stomatal conductance and canopy transpiration. These physiological changes result in a "CO2 fertilization effect" contributing to greater crop yields. However, CO2 is a greenhouse gas and has been the major contributor to increased radiative forcing and warmer global temperatures, resulting in more extreme weather events, with negative consequences for

IoT-based system of prevention and control for crop diseases and insect pests.

Environmentally friendly technologies for the prevention and control of crop diseases and insect pests are important to reduce the use of chemical pesticides, improve the quality of agricultural products, protect the environment, and promote sustainable development of crop production. On the basis of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, we developed a prevention and control system for crop diseases and insect pests with two main components: a plant protection device (the hardware) and an information management system (the software). To be suitable for both facility- and field-based production

Bio-Organic Fertilizers and Microbial Biostimulants in Maize-Cereal Cropping Systems.

Sustaining maize-cereal production under intensive agricultural systems is becoming increasingly challenging because of declining soil quality, low nutrient-use efficiency, and escalating abiotic and biotic stresses. In many regions, long-term rice-wheat cultivation has intensified these constraints, prompting greater interest in diversified production systems such as maize-wheat rotations. Within this context, bio-organic fertilizers (BOF) and microbial biostimulants are increasingly recognized not merely as nutrient inputs but as biologically active regulators of plant-soil interactions. Thi

Drivers and milk yield impacts of forage crop diversification in Napier grass-based smallholder dairy systems: evidence from Kenya.

Smallholder dairy systems in developing countries are constrained by feed scarcity, low feed quality, and low milk productivity. In Kenya, production mainly relies on Napier grass monocultures, which intensify these challenges. Forage crop diversification offers a pathway to improve feed availability and animal nutrition; however, empirical evidence on its drivers and productivity effects remains limited. The study addresses this gap by examining the drivers of forage crop diversification and its relationship with milk yield using data collected in 2024 from three regions in Kenya: Uasin Gishu

Tobacco intercropping with Allium crops reshapes soil microbiome-metabolome interactions and improves plant health and tobacco leaf quality.

BACKGROUND: Intercropping systems play important roles in improving soil conditions, enhancing crop performance and suppressing soil-borne diseases. However, the mechanisms by which tobacco-Allium intercropping regulates soil microecology, tobacco growth and leaf quality remain insufficiently understood. In this study, tobacco monoculture and tobacco intercropping systems with onion, garlic or Chinese chive were established to evaluate tobacco agronomic traits, disease occurrence, cured leaf chemical composition and defence-related enzyme activities. Soil physicochemical properties, microbial

Improving maize yield in newly reclaimed soils: effects of irrigation, mulching, and foliar treatments.

Improving maize yield in newly reclaimed soils presents major challenges. This study analyzed the impact of various irrigation methods (drip, sprinkler, and surface), foliar applications (potassium bicarbonate (PoB), methanol, and water control), and mulching techniques (with and without rice paddy straw) on the growth, physiology, productivity, and water use efficiency (WUE) of maize in newly reclaimed soil over the two seasons of 2022 and 2023. The study employed a split-split plot design arranged in randomized complete blocks with three replications. The integration of drip irrigation, PoB

Improving Albino Tea Quality by Foliar Application of Glycinebetaine as a Green Regulator under Lower Temperature Conditions.

White leaf No.1 (WL-1) is a low temperature-induced albino tea cultivar, which sticks out from tea plants with rich amino acids. Because harmonization of chloroplast ultrastructure integrity and lower chlorophyll contents during the albinism processes is much crucial for WL-1 production under extreme weather conditions, we carried out a field experiment to investigate the regulating effects of exogenous glycinebetaine (GB) on the chloroplast ultrastructure and quality constituents in young leaves of WL-1 at different albinism stages. The internal structure of chloroplasts degenerated at the al

Foliar water and solute absorption: an update.

The absorption of water and solutes by plant leaves has been recognised since more than two centuries. Given the polar nature of water and solutes, the mechanisms of foliar uptake have been proposed to be similar for water and electrolytes, including nutrient solutions. Research efforts since the 19th century focussed on characterising the properties of cuticles and applying foliar sprays to crop plants as a tool for improving crop nutrition. This was accompanied by the development of hundreds of studies aimed at characterising the chemical and structural nature of plant cuticles from differen

Optimum Olsen Phosphorus/ZincDTPA ratio for the initial growth of maize in agricultural soils of the Mediterranean region.

BACKGROUND: Zinc (Zn) deficiency in crops is commonly aggravated by high levels of phosphorus (P) in soil. In this work, the initial performance of pot-growing maize in response to the available P and Zn in soils with low available Zn and to the application of P and Zn fertilizers was investigated. RESULTS: The soils (six non-calcareous and 14 calcareous) ranged widely in available P (Olsen P: 5.5-37.9 mg kg-1 ), were poor in available Zn [diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid-extractable Zn (ZnDTPA ): 0.20-0.84 mg kg-1 ] and had an Olsen P/ZnDTPA ratio of 13 to 111 mg mg-1 . Soil P application

Effect of shading and grafting on yield and quality of tomato.

BACKGROUND: The need to increase marketable tomato yields and decrease losses due to sunburn and disease during the summer motivates farmers to adopt additional cultural practices such as shading and grafting. To investigate complex interactions among grafting, shading, and tomato cultivar, grafted and ungrafted tomatoes (cv. 'Optima' F1 and cv. 'Big Beef' F1 ) were grown in the soil under net-house cover, using pearl and red nets, and in unshaded conditions (open fields). Tomato fruit at the red stage of maturity were used for the analysis of quality traits, and total and marketable yields we

Using Synchrotron-Based Approaches To Examine the Foliar Application of ZnSO4 and ZnO Nanoparticles for Field-Grown Winter Wheat.

The effects of foliar-applied ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and ZnSO4 on the winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) grain yield and grain quality were studied under field conditions, with the distribution and speciation of Zn within the grain examined using synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Although neither of the two Zn compounds improved the grain yield or quality, both increased the grain Zn concentration (average increments were 5 and 10 mg/kg for ZnSO4 and ZnO NP treatments, respectively). Across all treatments, this Zn was mainly located withi

Natural products for pest control: an analysis of their role, value and future.

Natural products (NPs) have long been used as pesticides and have broadly served as a source of inspiration for a great many commercial synthetic organic fungicides, herbicides and insecticides that are in the market today. In light of the continuing need for new tools to address an ever-changing array of fungal, weed and insect pests, NPs continue to be a source of models and templates for the development of new pest control agents. Interestingly, an examination of the literature suggests that NP models exist for many of the pest control agents that were discovered by other means, suggesting

Opuntia spp. as Alternative Fodder for Sustainable Livestock Production.

During the past decades, livestock production has increased significantly, which has led to the degradation of rangelands due to overgrazing. The lack of water in several arid areas has led to a decline in crop and animal husbandry. As a consequence, the demand for drought-resistant crops has increased significantly so as to keep crop and animal husbandry systems viable and sustainable. Cactaceae have adaptive characteristics that ensure their development progress under drought conditions. The present review provides information on the nutritive value of Opuntia in animal fodder production, it

Friends and Foes: Bacteria of the Hydroponic Plant Microbiome.

Hydroponic greenhouses and vertical farms provide an alternative crop production strategy in regions that experience low temperatures, suboptimal sunlight, or inadequate soil quality. However, hydroponic systems are soilless and, therefore, have vastly different bacterial microbiota than plants grown in soil. This review highlights some of the most prevalent plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and destructive phytopathogenic bacteria that dominate hydroponic systems. A complete understanding of which bacteria increase hydroponic crop yields and ways to mitigate crop loss from disease are cr

Effect of soil mulching on agricultural greenhouse gas emissions in China: A meta-analysis.

Human demand for food has been increasing as population grows around the world. Meanwhile, global temperature has been rising with the increase of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Although soil mulching (SM) is an effective method to increase crop yield because it could conserve soil moisture and temperature, it is also an important factor affecting GHG productions and emissions. At present, research results in terms of the impact of SM on agricultural GHG emissions are still inconsistent. Therefore, a meta-analysis was used to quantitatively analyze the impact of SM on crop yield and GHG emiss
