Appendicoliths are commonly found obstructing the lumen of the appendix at the time of appendectomy. To identify factors that might contribute to their formation we investigated the composition of appendicoliths using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy, gas chromatography, polarized light microscopy, X-ray crystallography and protein mass spectroscopy. Water-soluble ruthenium complexes [(η6-arene)Ru(κ2-L)]n+ (n = 0,1) ([Ru]-1-[Ru]-9) ligated with pyridine-based ligands are synthesized, and the molecular structure of the representative complex [Ru]-2 is confirmed by X-ray crystallography. A photoinduced solid-state SO₂ isomerism drives a larger mechanical change (benzene-ring rotation) in a neighbouring ion (i.e., the system acts as a solar-powered molecular transducer). The ring rotation and SO₂ photoisomerisation are observed using in situ X-ray crystallography and are controllable, reproducible, and metastable at low temperatures. This discovery presents a new range of materials for solar-energy-based molecular transduction.

Three new chalcogen-bridged mercury-iron clusters with 7, 14, and 39 mercury centers were obtained from the reaction of tBuSSiMe3 with [Fe(CO)4 (HgX)2 ] (X= Cl, Br). The compounds were isolated in the form of orange crystals that were characterized by X-ray crystallography. Twelve ENT-abietane and ENT-kaurane type diterpenoids, 1- 12, including five new compounds 1- 5, were isolated from the roots of Suregada glomerulata. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR and other spectroscopic studies, and the structures of 1 and 2 were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. A practical and efficient synthesis of spirobarbiturates of type III is reported when NH acidity of the imide function of the hydrophilic linker element allowed the introduction of different substituents. Structural characterization, which was based on both X-ray crystallography and spectroscopic investigations, indicated type II beta-turn formation. Introduction of the molecular scaffold into solid phase peptide synthesis gave rise to spirocyclic neuropeptide analogs.

The stereoselective total synthesis of structure 1 assigned to the macrolide natural product neaumycin B is reported in a 2.3% overall yield on 90 mg scale. The synthesis features a gram-scale nickel-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling/spiroketalization tactic to construct the spiroketal core of neaumycin B. The stereostructures of the C3-C6, C8-C14, and C20-C41 segments of synthetic neaumycin B were unambiguously verified by X-ray crystallography.
