Immune parameters in mares resistant and susceptible to persistent post-breeding endometritis: effects of immunomodulation.

Our objective was to characterize immune parameters in susceptible (SM) and resistant (RM) mares, with and without artificial insemination (AI) and immunomodulation. Eight RM and eight SM were selected based on their reproductive history and functional tests. Both groups of mares were evaluated during three consecutive cycles: Cycle 1, untreated cycle (control); Cycle 2, AI with dead semen; Cycle 3, AI with dead semen and immunomodulation. Endometrial biopsies were taken during the three cycles as follows: Cycle 1--at estrus, when follicles > or =35mm and at diestrus (7+/-1 days after ovulatio

Mouse submandibular gland morphogenesis: a paradigm for embryonic signal processing.

Signal processing is the sine qua non of embryogenesis. At its core, any single signal transduction pathway may be understood as classic Information Theory, adapted as an open system such that, because of networking, the "receiver" is presented with more information than was initially signaled by the "source". Over 40 years ago, Waddington presented his "Epigenetic Landscape" as a metaphor for the hierarchical nature of embryogenesis. Mathematically, Waddington's landscape may be modeled as a neural net. The "black box" of the neural net is an interacting network of signal transduction pathway

Multimodal Machine Learning Workflows for Prediction of Psychosis in Patients With Clinical High-Risk Syndromes and Recent-Onset Depression.

IMPORTANCE: Diverse models have been developed to predict psychosis in patients with clinical high-risk (CHR) states. Whether prediction can be improved by efficiently combining clinical and biological models and by broadening the risk spectrum to young patients with depressive syndromes remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether psychosis transition can be predicted in patients with CHR or recent-onset depression (ROD) using multimodal machine learning that optimally integrates clinical and neurocognitive data, structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI), and polygenic risk scores (PR

Advancing Hair Regrowth Assessment: Development and Standardization of Methods for Evaluating New Hair Growth, Hair Keratin Levels, and Scalp Health in Androgenetic Alopecia Patients.

Introduction Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a prevalent and progressive hair disorder affecting both men and women. It is characterized by the miniaturization of hair follicles, reduced hair density, and alterations in scalp conditions. Accurate assessment of hair growth parameters is crucial for understanding the progression of AGA and evaluating the efficacy of treatment interventions. This study aimed to develop and validate robust methodologies for assessing critical endpoints related to hair growth and scalp health. These standardized methods provide a reliable framework for future effica

[An integrated theory of natural control of animal populations].

Since the twenties of our century, at least 15 theories worth discussing have been developped which intend to explain the causes of natural control of animal populations (for details see SCHWERDTFEGER, 1968). An attempt is made to integrate the different-partly contrary-ideas and new results into a general theory. The basis to start from is the cybernetic principle of feed-back mechanism introduced into population dynamics by WILBERT (1962): an actual value (e.g. the inside temperature of a refrigerator) is permanently changed by perturbances (the always higher outside temperature); through a

Active inference with reusable state-dependent value profiles.

Optimal behavior in volatile environments requires agents to deploy different value-control regimes across hidden latent structures. However, representing independent preferences, biases, and action confidence for every situation is computationally and statistically intractable. We introduce value profiles: a compact set of reusable parameter bundles-comprising outcome preferences, policy priors, and action precision-assigned to hidden states in a generative model. As posterior beliefs evolve trial-by-trial, effective control parameters emerge through belief-weighted mixing. This enables state

Elements of olfactory intelligence in Drosophila.

The ability to make the world of odorants intelligible is a key capability of the Drosophila olfactory system that we shall call olfactory intelligence. Characterizing the functional logic of the Drosophila early olfactory system that makes the natural world of odorants intelligible is a major challenge in neuroscience. Starting by modeling the space of odorants using constructs of both semantic and syntactic information, we establish that the Antenna Lobe and Mushroom Body Calyx first decompose the confounding representation of the Antenna into a concentration independent odorant semantics in

Feasible cognition requires latent state.

Intelligent behavior across motor control, speech production, learning, and social cognition operates under uncertainty: sensory feedback is noisy and delayed, actions are imprecise, and observable outcomes often have ambiguous causes. When multiple latent states generate identical or sufficiently similar observations, regulation, learning, and evaluation based on behavior alone become underdetermined. We argue that inference over latent state is therefore a feasibility condition for cognition under partial observability, rather than merely a modeling convenience. Observable signals-movements,

Detection of spiking motifs of arbitrary length in neural activity using bounded synaptic delays.

In the context of spiking neural networks, the temporal coding hypothesis is increasingly preferred over the rate coding hypothesis due to its advantages in processing speed and energy efficiency. In temporal coding, synaptic delays are crucial for processing signals with precise spike timings, known as spiking motifs. Synaptic delays are however bounded in the brain and can thus be shorter than the duration of a motif. This prevents the use of motif recognition methods that consist of setting heterogeneous delays to synchronize the input spikes on a single output neuron acting as a coincidenc

Modeling synaptic interactions between mammalian breathing and swallowing central pattern generators.

Breathing and swallowing are tightly coupled motor behaviors whose execution depends on the coordinated activity of two brainstem central pattern generators (R-CPG, Sw-CPG). We present a mechanistic neural network model that captures this coordination. The model was built by incrementally expanding the synaptic connectivity of R-CPG and Sw-CPG modules, each composed of neuronal population nodes whose dynamics incorporate firing rate adaptation. The rhythmogenic cores of both CPGs are implemented as half-center oscillators operating independently. In agreement with accompanying experimental rec

Optimal control for stochastic neural oscillators.

This study develops an event-based, energy-efficient control strategy for desynchronizing coupled neuronal networks using optimal control theory. Inspired by phase resetting techniques in Parkinson's disease treatment, we incorporate stochasticity of the system's dynamics into deterministic models to address neural system intrinsic noise. We use an advanced computational solver for nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations to solve the stochastic Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation via level set methods for a single neuron model; this allows us to find control inputs which drive the dyn

Effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation on Spike train correlation in two-compartment model neurons.

Correlated spiking has been widely found in large population of neurons and been linked to neural coding. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a promising non-invasive brain stimulation technique that can modulate the spiking activity of neurons. Despite its growing application, the tACS effects on the temporal correlation between spike trains are still not fully understood. In this study, we use a pair of unconnected two-compartment model neurons of the integrate-and-fire (IF) type to simulate the correlated spike trains driven by shared fluctuating dendritic inputs and expo

Decreased spinal inhibition leads to undiversified locomotor patterns.

During walking and running, animals display rich and coordinated motor patterns that are generated and controlled within the central nervous system. Previous computational and experimental results suggest that the balance between excitation and inhibition in neural circuits may be critical for generating such structured motor patterns. In this paper, we explore the influence of this balance on the ability of a reservoir computing artificial neural network to learn human locomotor patterns, using mean-field theory and simulations. We created networks with varying neuron numbers, connection perc

The role of the prefrontal cortex in cocaine-induced noradrenaline release in the nucleus accumbens: a computational study.

Research has extensively explored the role of the dopaminergic system in the reward circuit, while the contribution of the noradrenergic system remains less understood. This study aims to fill this gap by employing computational modeling to examine how the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) influences cocaine-induced norepinephrine (NE) release in the nucleus accumbens shell (NAcc), with mediation by the nucleus of the tractus solitarius (NTS) and the locus coeruleus (LC). The model replicates previously reported data on NE release in the mPFC following cocaine administration. Additionally, it pr

Bayesian Dynamical Modeling of Fixational Eye Movements.

Humans constantly move their eyes, even during visual fixations, where miniature (or fixational) eye movements occur involuntarily. Fixational eye movements comprise slow components (physiological drift and tremor) and fast components (microsaccades). The complex dynamics of physiological drift can be modeled qualitatively as a statistically self-avoiding random walk (SAW model, Engbert et al., 2011). In this study, we implement a data assimilation approach for the SAW model to explain statistics of fixational eye movements and microsaccades in experimental data obtained from high-resolution e

Theoretical considerations on models of vestibular self-motion perception as inherent in computational frameworks of motion sickness.

This study examines self-motion perception incorporated into motion sickness models. Research on modeling self-motion perception and motion sickness has advanced independently, though both are thought to share neural mechanisms, making the construction of a unified model opportune. Models based on the Subjective Vertical Conflict (SVC) theory, a refinement of the neural mismatch theory, have primarily focused on motion sickness, with limited validation for self-motion perception. Emerging studies have begun evaluating the perceptual validity of these models, suggesting that some models can rep

Computational model to reproduce fingertip trajectories and arm postures during human three-joint arm movements: minimum muscle-stress-change model.

Previous studies on the computational principle for solving the movement selection problem for the human arm have primarily focused on hand trajectories associated with the two-joint movements of the shoulder and elbow joints. Further, only a few computational models, that consider the musculoskeletal system, have been investigated. From this perspective, a minimum muscle-stress-change model was evaluated for the fingertip trajectories and arm postures during three-joint movements in the horizontal plane, including wrist joint rotation. A musculoskeletal model of a three-joint arm with eight m

A dynamic computational model of the parallel circuit on the basal ganglia-cortex associated with Parkinson's disease dementia.

The cognitive impairment will gradually appear over time in Parkinson's patients, which is closely related to the basal ganglia-cortex network. This network contains two parallel circuits mediated by putamen and caudate nucleus, respectively. Based on the biophysical mean-field model, we construct a dynamic computational model of the parallel circuit in the basal ganglia-cortex network associated with Parkinson's disease dementia. The simulated results show that the decrease of power ratio in the prefrontal cortex is mainly caused by dopamine depletion in the caudate nucleus and is less relate

Controlling flat-foot limit cycle walkers with compliant joints based on local stability variation.

This study investigates local stability of a four-link limit cycle walking biped with flat feet and compliant ankle joints. Local stability represents the behavior along the solution trajectory between Poincare sections, which can provide detailed information about the evolution of disturbances. The effects of ankle stiffness and foot structure on local stability are studied. In addition, we apply a control strategy based on local stability analysis to the limit cycle walker. Control is applied only in the phases with poor local stability. Simulation results show that the energy consumption is
