Examinations on global changes in the total and spatial extent of tropical cyclone precipitation relating to rapid intensification.

Moderate tropical cyclone precipitation (TCP) is of great significance to regional water resource supply, while extreme TCP could bring significant adverse impacts to ecosystems and society, especially when tropical cyclones intensify rapidly, leaving no time to take prevention actions. Whether rapid intensification (RI) of tropical cyclones (TCs) affect TCP in both land and ocean remains unknown. Here we classified TCs which have undergone increases in the maximum sustained wind speed (MSW) by at least 30 knots within 24-h into RI category. We analyzed TCP totals provided by daily precipitati

Critical decisions in hurricane evacuation bridge and roadway closures.

The closure of bridges and roadways during hurricanes can represent an abrupt end to evacuations for the resi-dents of coastal barrier island. Despite the gravity of bridge and roadway closures during hurricane evacuations, their governing policies and practices in the United States are often opaque, poorly defined, or mired in confusion. The lack of clarity among bridge and roadway closure policy rationales and terminology, as well as their wide dissensus, may disrupt public compliance and participation in hurricane evacuations. This article argues for the application of critical decision met

Resilience of environment, infrastructure, communities, and governance in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria and the need for community empowerment to develop decentralized, nature-based solutions to sustainability.

Collapse of electric and water infrastructure throughout Puerto Rico with Hurricane Maria is well documented but assessment of interactions among environment, infrastructure, and society is lacking. A classification system is developed to assess the resilience of each component based on principles of ecosystem responses to long-term and unexpected environmental change. All infrastructure sectors have experienced long-term decline because of a patch and stabilize approach that excludes strengthen and innovate. Maria was the tipping point for system collapse. The weakest sector, however, is gove

Can hurricanes drive green innovations?

We propose that natural disasters (specifically hurricanes) encourage the development of green innovations in small island developing states (SIDS). Using a novel and unique dataset of hurricane instances and green innovation activities in SIDS, we find that hurricanes follow a U-shaped relationship with green innovations. This suggests that while initially hurricanes negatively impact green innovations, as firms experience more hurricanes, this will trigger the development of green innovations. Our results also reveal that present and future government regulations act as antecedents to green

Monitoring extreme meteo-marine events in the Mediterranean area using the microseism (Medicane Apollo case study).

Microseism is the continuous background seismic signal caused by the interaction between the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and the solid Earth. Several studies have dealt with the relationship between microseisms and the tropical cyclones, but none focused on the small-scale tropical cyclones that occur in the Mediterranean Sea, called Medicanes. In this work, we analysed the Medicane Apollo which impacted the eastern part of Sicily during the period 25 October-5 November 2021 causing heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts and violent sea waves. We investigated the microseism accompanying this extrem

Coordinating non-established disaster relief groups: a case study of Hurricane Irma in Florida, United States.

This study examines the role of non-established relief groups (NERGs) and their involvement in the response to Hurricane Irma after it struck the state of Florida, United States, in September 2017. Its principal goal is to discover more about the engagement of NERGs in disaster response, as well as their motivations and their coordination with other emergency management agencies. The findings of a review of after-action reports and the outcomes of interviews with NERGs and other established organisations suggest that these groups often work with previously established networks. Many of the eme

Forecasting intensifying disturbance effects on coral reefs.

Anticipating future changes of an ecosystem's dynamics requires knowledge of how its key communities respond to current environmental regimes. The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is under threat, with rapid changes of its reef-building hard coral (HC) community structure already evident across broad spatial scales. While several underlying relationships between HC and multiple disturbances have been documented, responses of other benthic communities to disturbances are not well understood. Here we used statistical modelling to explore the effects of broad-scale climate-related disturbances on benthic

Caring for vulnerable medical populations: Lessons learned from Hurricane Harvey (and every other hurricane before it).

Mass care on an epic scale - we thought we had seen it all during Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Ike and then Sandy. However, catastrophic scales reached a new level during Hurricane Harvey. How did the response and recovery to Harvey differ from previous hurricane events and what lessons were (and were not) learned? This paper examines the impact on the delivery of medical care to the vulnerable populations in Harvey's path.

Mitigating Cholera in the Aftermath of Cyclone Idai.

Catastrophic damage and floods followed the deadliest cyclone on record for the Southern Hemisphere. In the aftermath of Cyclone Idai, a cholera outbreak was detected. The global stockpile of oral cholera vaccine was rapidly deployed to counter this fast-growing epidemic. We urge the international community to continue to highlight the importance of water, sanitation, and hygiene as the long-term goal for controlling cholera and meeting the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Decreased likelihood of schooling as a consequence of tropical cyclones: Evidence from 13 low- and middle-income countries.

Increasing educational attainment is one of the most important and effective strategies for health and economic improvements. The extent to which extreme climate events disrupt education, resulting in reduced educational attainment, remains understudied. Children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) may be uniquely vulnerable to losing schooling after disasters due to the poor physical condition of schools and the lack of resources to mitigate unexpected household shocks. Our analysis assesses this overlooked social cost of tropical cyclones on schooling attainment. We study the educati

An assessment of mangrove vegetation changes in reference to cyclone impacted climatic alterations at land-ocean interface of Indian Sundarbans with application of remote sensing-based analytical tools.

Mangrove ecoregions of the Indian Sundarbans (IS) are highly productive ecosystems in the Bengal delta of the Indian subcontinent. These mangroves are crucial in reducing the negative consequences of extreme environmental events like excessive wave movements and periodic storm surges, in addition to serving as an important habitat for a variety of distinct flora and animals. The Bay of Bengal has been increasingly affected by climatic changes like increase in sea surface temperature (SST), salinization, and sediment loads, a decrease in freshwater intake, and sea level rise. In the last two de

Future North Atlantic tropical cyclone intensities in modified historical environments.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) have ranked as the deadliest and most financially crippling natural disasters in the United States. It is imperative to assess potential shifts in TC intensity within the paradigm of an evolving climate. In this study we apply a fixed-constraint storyline approach that holds storm tracks and initial conditions constant to probe future TC intensity in the North Atlantic Basin. First, we simulate 618 historical TC events using the Risk Analysis Framework for Tropical Cyclones (RAFT)'s deep-learning intensity model. Next, we apply warming signals derived from eight CMIP6 c

Climate hazards and mental health hospitalizations in China: socioeconomic disparities, demographic drivers, and adaptation - a nationwide population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Mental and behavioural disorders account for a large and growing share of the global disease burden, yet evidence on hazard-specific mental health risks and adaptation remains limited. We aimed to systematically evaluate disease-specific hospitalization risks and attributable burdens following multiple climate hazards in China, and examined whether socioeconomic conditions, demographic change, and historical hazard experience modified these risks. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study in 955 counties in China (2016-2023) using 392,924 daily disease-specific hos

The role of tropical waves in the genesis of Tropical Cyclone Seroja in the Maritime Continent.

Tropical cyclone Seroja was one of the first tropical cyclones to significantly impact Indonesian land, and the strongest one in such close proximity to Timor Island. In April 2021 Seroja brought historic flooding to near-equatorial regions of Indonesia and East Timor, as well as impacting Western Australia. Here we show that the unusual near-equatorial cyclogenesis in close proximity to a land mass was due to "perfect storm" conditions associated with multiple wave interactions. Specifically, this was associated with enhanced equatorial convection on the leading edge of a Madden-Julian Oscill

Rebel responses to disasters in conflict zones: a case study of Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar.

Populations in conflict-affected contexts face overlapping drivers of disaster risk. This article explores the intersection of disasters and armed conflict through an analysis of the role of non-state armed groups, focusing on the Arakan Army (AA)'s response to Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar's Rakhine State in 2023. Using the process tracing method and drawing on interviews and secondary sources, the study finds that the AA's fragmented territorial control and parallel governance structures nonetheless enabled extensive humanitarian operations through collaboration with civil society and volunteer n

Does climate risk influence firms' voluntary environmental information disclosures? Evidence from typhoon events in China.

Environmental information disclosure has become a key strategy for firms to respond to climate shocks. Using data from major typhoons in China (2008-2022), this study distinguishes between firms in disaster-affected regions and those in disaster-neighboring regions to examine how actual climate shocks and perceived climate risk influence voluntary environmental information disclosures (VEID). Results show that disaster-affected firms raise VEID in response to direct impacts, while firms in disaster-neighboring regions do so mainly due to heightened risk perception, with a larger overall increa

Anthropogenic Air Pollutants Alter Environmental Conditions for Tropical Cyclone Genesis.

Anthropogenic aerosols can modify the environmental conditions underpinning tropical cyclone (TC) formation, yet their integrated and species-specific impacts remain poorly constrained. Using state-of-the-art WRF-Chem simulations with updated anthropogenic emission inventories, we quantify how major aerosol species influence the Tropical Cyclone Genesis Potential Index (GPI) over the Northwest Pacific. Total aerosol loading reduces regional GPI by approximately 24% relative to a clean-air baseline, primarily through decreases in potential intensity, midtropospheric humidity, and vorticity, acc

Tropical cyclones and climate change: An overview for the public health community.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) strain the public health system, particularly as coastal communities and infrastructure grow. Increases in sea level and ocean temperatures motivate research into how anthropogenic climate change is affecting TC behavior. We provide a comprehensive overview of TCs and available tools to study them, then introduce key TC-climate change relationships of greatest relevance for public health. We discuss observed trends and future projections in global TCs using observations, theoretical basis for observed trends, and results from a wide array of models. There is high confid
