Taxonomic inflation or hidden diversity: unveiling the fact surrounds Lytocestus indicus (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea).

The tapeworms belonging to the order Caryophyllidea (Platyhelminthes, Eucestoda) represent a widespread group of intestinal parasites found in cypriniform and siluriform fishes. This group comprises four families (Balanotaeniidae, Capingentidae, Caryophyllaeidae, Lytocestidae), 42 genera and approximately 130 described species. Additionally, over a hundred new taxa have been reported from India. While many of these taxa are endemic and have unique evolutionary importance, a considerable number of putative new taxa were also invalidated because the quality and reliability of the published data

Different sex determination systems in two closely related Eurasian minnow (Phoxinus) species.

Sex determination systems in teleost fishes are highly diverse, and even closely related species often evolve different mechanisms. Although hybridisation among Eurasian minnows (Phoxinus: Cypriniformes, Leuciscidae) is well documented, their sex determination systems remain unexplored. Here, we investigated the genetic basis of sex determination in Phoxinus phoxinus and Phoxinus csikii using whole-genome sequencing, with a combination of coverage, SNP-, and k-mer-based approaches to identify sex-associated genomic regions. Whole-genome coverage analyses revealed no chromosomes with significan

Spermatological characters of monozoic tapeworms (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), including first data on a species from the Indomalayan catfish.

The ultrastructure of spermiogenesis and mature spermatozoon in Lytocestus indicus (Cestoda: Lytocestidae) is described; this is the first representative of this group of monozoic, presumably most basal, tapeworms (Eucestoda) from the Indomalayan region to be documented in this manner. Similarly, as in other caryophyllideans, its spermiogenesis involves the formation of a conical differentiation zone with 2 centrioles associated with striated roots and an intercentriolar body. In the course of the process, 1 of the centrioles develops a free flagellum, which fuses with a cytoplasmic protrusion

Comparison of artificial spawning effectiveness of hCG, CPH and GnRHa in combination with dopamine inhibitors in a wild strain of ide Leuciscus idus (L.) in hatchery conditions.

Optimization of artificial reproduction, by increasing the survival rate of embryos and hatching rate, is of major importance for reducing genetic diversity, especially in fish captured from their natural habitat that subsequently spawn in hatcheries. The artificial reproduction of ide, Leuciscus idus (L.) was conducted in controlled conditions. The spawning agents included: different doses of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) that was compared with common carp pituitary homogenate (CPH), Ovopel - a commercial agent for induction of spawning that contains mammalian gonadotropin releasing horm

Two human cases of gnathostomiasis and discovery of a second intermediate host of Gnathostoma nipponicum in Japan.

Two human cases of gnathostomiasis from ingestion of raw native Japanese loaches, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, are reported. Seven early third-stage larval Gnathostoma nipponicum were recovered from 3,098 loaches in the same district in which 2 human patients had obtained and eaten raw loaches. Encapsulated G. nipponicum larvae were also recovered from loaches infected under laboratory conditions. All 6 weasels captured in the same district in which the naturally infected loaches were found and where the humans had become infected were infected with adult worms of the same species. This is the

Niwaella tigrina, a new species of spined loach from the Poyang Lake system of Jiangxi Province, East China.

A new species of the spiny loach genus Niwaella is described herein from the Xiu-Shui river, an affluent of Lake Poyang in Jiangxi Province, China. This species is distinguished from all other congeneric species in China due to having a unique body coloration, comprising 20-25 transverse black bars on the dorsum and upper part of the flank. Other characteristics, though not exclusive to this species, include an indistinct blackish mid-dorsal stripe from the nape to the caudal-fin base, a lower jaw fully covered by the lower lip; 17-20 black vertical bars on the lower part of flank, a short sub

Experimental infection in a monkey with Gnathostoma hispidum larvae obtained from loaches.

Since the 1908s gnathostomiasis has occurred sporadically in Japanese who have eaten loaches, fresh-water fish imported from southeast Asia. Symptoms include creeping skin eruptions and eosinophilia. The symptoms disappeared in most patients within three months after the onset and the patients then remained symptom-free. To elucidate the causative factors, we fed one monkey with 80 gnathostome larvae collected from loaches and autopsied the animal 466 days later. Fifty-one viable larvae (64%) were recovered from muscle; these were in the advanced third stage and were encapsulated.

Redescription of two Allocreadium species and molecular dating of the family Allocreadiidae (Trematoda: Gorgoderoidea).

The family Allocreadiidae comprises diverse parasites of freshwater fishes, but their evolutionary timescale remains poorly understood. We provide a molecular dating analysis based on an expanded 28S rRNA dataset and redescriptions of two East Asian species, Allocreadium hasu and A. pseudaspii, with new morphological and genetic data. Allocreadium hasu from Lake Biwa (Japan) is genetically close to Far Eastern A. khankaiense and A. anastasii (0.09-0.97% divergence in 28S) but has not been recorded in the Russian Far East. Allocreadium pseudaspii, first recorded in the Bolshaya Ussurka River, p

Crossing barriers of zoogeographical regions: Molecular evidence of vicariance of the only cestode parasite of loaches (Cobitidae) in the Indomalayan region, Paracaryophyllaeus lepidocephali (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), and its redescription.

Tapeworms of the genus Paracaryophyllaeus Kulakovskaya, 1961 (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea) are specific parasites of loaches (Cypriniformes: Cobitoidea) and occur almost exclusively in the Palaearctic region. The only exception and example of vicariance over the borders of two zoogeographical regions is Paracaryophyllaeus lepidocephali (Kundu, 1985), an insufficiently known species described from the Indomalayan region, with uncertain generic allocation. In the present paper, the species is redescribed based on new material collected from the type host, Lepidocephalichthys guntea, in West Bengal,

Complete Mitochondrial Genomes of Araiocypris batodes and Tanichthys huidongensis Provide Phylogenetic Evidence for the Reassignment of Araiocypris to Tanichthyidae.

Background/Objectives: The monotypic genus Araiocypris is currently classified in Xenocyprididae, yet its familial placement has long been controversial and lacks sufficient molecular phylogenetic support. Mitogenomic resources for the family Tanichthyidae remain limited, and the phylogenetic relationship between Araiocypris and tanichthyid species remains unexplored. This study was conducted to re-evaluate the taxonomic status of Araiocypris and characterize the mitogenomic evolution of Tanichthyidae. Methods: The complete mitochondrial genomes of Tanichthys huidongensis and Araiocypris batod

Molecular evidence of cryptic diversity in Paracaryophyllaeus (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), parasites of loaches (Cobitidae) in Eurasia, including description of P. vladkae n. sp.

Molecular phylogenetic analysis of an extensive collection of monozoic tapeworms of the genus Paracaryophyllaeus Kulakovskaya, 1961 (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), parasites of loaches (Cypriniformes: Cobitidae) in Eurasia, has revealed cryptic species diversity within this long-time monotypic genus, especially in the Paracaryophyllaeus gotoi (Motomura, 1927) species complex [syn. Paracaryophyllaeus dubininorum (Kulakovskaya, 1961); type species]. Three independent, well-supported clades were discovered on the basis of molecular data: (i) specimens from Misgurnus anguillicaudatus and Cobitis luther

Proteocephalid tapeworms (Cestoda: Onchoproteocephalidea) of loaches (Cobitoidea): Evidence for monophyly and high endemism of parasites in the Far East.

The parasite fauna of loaches (Cypriniformes: Cobitoidea), a group of small bottom-dwelling freshwater fishes with a mostly Eurasian distribution, remains a largely unknown quantity. Here we revise the taxonomy of tapeworms of the genus Proteocephalus Weinland, 1858 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) that had been found in loaches from the Palaearctic Region (Central Europe, Japan and Russia [Primorsky Region]). Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on two nuclear (ssr- and lsrDNA) and two mitochondrial genes (cox1 and rrnL) revealed a monophyletic group consisting of four valid species nesting withi

The association of metal ion exposure with alpha-synuclein-like immunoreactivity in the central nervous system of fish, Catostomus commersoni.

Alpha-synuclein protein aggregates are a major component of Lewy bodies, the intracytoplasmic inclusions found in dopaminergic neurons that are a defining characteristic of Parkinson's disease. Other "synucleopathies" include dementia with Lewy bodies and multisystem atrophy. In vitro, the formation of these deposits can be induced by a number of substances, including metal ions. Fish provide a useful model to study the long-term biological effects of metal ion exposure, but to date no studies have been reported concerning such exposures with respect to alpha-synuclein aggregation. THE HIDDEN DIVERSITY OF THE ENIGMATIC ARCHIGETES (CESTODA: CARYOPHYLLIDEA) IN NORTH AMERICA: TWO NEW COMBINATIONS AND DESCRIPTION OF A NEW SPECIES FROM GOLDEN SHINER.

Tapeworms of the order Caryophyllidea (Cestoda) are widespread parasites of cypriniform and siluriform fishes. Most species occur in suckers (Catostomidae) in the Nearctic, including 4 species of the enigmatic genus Archigetes Leuckart, 1878. Species of this genus can mature in oligochaetes, i.e., may have a monoxenous (direct) life cycle. In this article, Archigetes notemigoni n. sp. is described from the golden shiner Notemigonus crysoleucas (Mitchill, 1814) (Leuciscidae) in Wisconsin. The new species differs from other Archigetes species in having a small (≤2 mm long), spindle-shaped body w

Chromosomal rDNA Distribution Patterns in Clonal Cobitis Triploid Hybrids (Teleostei, Cobitidae): Insights into Parental Genomic Contributions.

Background: Interspecific hybridization between relative species Cobitis taenia (with a diploid genome designated as TT), Cobitis elongatoides (EE) and Cobitis tanaitica (NN) and the successive polyploidization with transitions from sexuality to asexuality experienced by triploid Cobitis hybrids likely influence their chromosomal rearrangements, including rearrangements of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) distribution patterns. Previously, we documented distinct karyotypic differences: C. elongatoides exhibited bi-armed chromosomes while C. taenia showed uni-armed chromosomes with rDNA-positive hybridizat

Multiple Bioactivities of Peptides from Hydrolyzed Misgurnus anguillicaudatus.

Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (loach) is a widely distributed benthic fish in Asia. In this study, the alkaline protease was used to hydrolyze loach, and the hydrolysate products of different molecular weights were obtained by membrane separation. In vitro antioxidant assays showed that the <3 kDa fraction (SLH-1) exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity (DPPH, hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical scavenging ability, and reducing power), while SLH-1 was purified by gel filtration chromatography, and peptide sequences were identified by LC-MS/MS. A total of six peptides with antioxidant act

Human gnathostomiasis.

Two patients became infested with Gnathostoma nipponicum after eating raw loach-fish they had caught in a rice field in central Japan. A fragment of Gnathostoma was found in a biopsy from one of them. The sera of both patients reacted with Gnathostoma antigen using indirect immunofluorescence. Scanning electron microscopy was performed on blocks of the paraffin-embedded parasite sample and the viscera of a fish from the same rice field. The risk of eating raw freshwater fish is discussed.
