A fractional-order model for nosocomial infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Northern Cyprus.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a resilient gram-negative bacterium, poses a persistent threat as a leading cause of nosocomial infections, particularly in resource-constrained regions. Despite existing treatment and control measures, the bacterium continues to challenge healthcare systems, especially in developing nations. This paper introduces a fractional-order model to elucidate the dynamic behavior of nosocomial infections caused by P. aeruginosa and to compare the efficacy of carbapenems and aminoglycosides in treatment. The model's existence and uniqueness are established, and both global and l

The Spectrum of Genetic Defects in Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia in the Population of Cyprus: A Retrospective Analysis.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD) is caused by mutations in the CYP21A2 gene. The study refers to CAH patients of Greek-Cypriot ancestry between years 2007 and 2018. One hundred and twenty patients with various degrees of CAH were categorized and genotyped. The patients were categorized in 4 mutation groups based on their clinical and biochemical findings. The majority of patients (85.0%) belonged to the non-classic (NC)-CAH form and the disorder was more often diagnosed in females (71.7%). The most severe classic salt-wasting (SW) form was identifi

Biological and social implications of a medieval burial from Cyprus for understanding leprosy in the past.

An early 15th-century burial from a basilica at Polis Chrysochous provides the first archaeological evidence of leprosy in Cyprus, extending the temporal depth and illuminating the biological and social history of this disease on the island. The skeletal remains of a young adult female (age 20-34 years) display pathognomonic features of lepromatous leprosy including maxillary alveolar resorption with antemortem loss of all but one incisor, remodeling of the margin of the nasal sill and resorption of the anterior nasal spine, with diaphyseal remodeling of hand and foot phalanges and the distal

Case Report of Unusual Mortality of Egyptian Fruit Bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus) in northern Cyprus.

We report an unusual mortality event affecting the isolated Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus) population in northern Cyprus, combining clinical admissions, microbiological findings, and roost surveys to assess magnitude and potential drivers. From January to June 2025, the Cyprus Wildlife Research Institute (CWRI) Wildlife Hospital received an unprecedented surge in admissions with 12 individuals (compared with a total of 16 admissions from 2017 to 2024), with high acute mortality: most bats arrived moribund and died within 12-24 h. Clinical records noted localized purulent lesions an

Assessing perceived and functional health literacy among parents in Cyprus: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Parents often must take decisions regarding their children's health, which requires certain skills and competences. Parental health literacy (HL) is important in establishing positive health-promoting behaviours and better health outcomes to their children. Limited parental HL has been associated with various negative children's health outcomes. The aim of the study was to explore perceived and functional HL among parents in Cyprus. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample of 416 parents of children, aged 6 months to 15 years old, presenting in pedia

High Emergence of ESBL-Producing E. coli Cystitis: Time to Get Smarter in Cyprus.

BACKGROUND: Widespread prevalence of extended-spectrum βeta-lactamase producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-producing E. coli) limits the infection therapeutic options and is a growing global health problem. In this study our aim was to investigate the antimicrobial resistance profile of the E. coli in hospitalized and out-patients in Cyprus. RESULTS: During the period 2010-2014, 389 strains of E. coli were isolated from urine samples of hospitalized and out-patients in Cyprus. ESBL-producing E. coli, was observed in 53% of hospitalized and 44% in out-patients, latest one being in 2014. All ESBL-p

Identification of a novel uncultured Rickettsia species strain (Rickettsia species strain Tselenti) in Cyprus.

In a previous study conducted in Cyprus, various spotted fever group Rickettsia species were detected and identified in ticks by molecular analysis. Among them, a partially characterized Rickettsia species was detected in Hyalomma anatolicum excavatum and Rhipicephalus turanicus ticks. We report characterization of this rickettsial strain by using polymerase chain reaction sequencing analysis of partial citrate synthase A, outer membrane protein A, outer membrane protein B, and 17-kD protein genes. We propose a provisional name Rickettsia sp. strain Tselenti for this strain until it is isolate

Exploring vaccination coverage and attitudes of health care workers towards influenza vaccine in Cyprus.

UNLABELLED: Seasonal influenza is a major public health problem. Nosocomial influenza is particularly concerning as it may affect patients at high risk for complications. Unvaccinated health care workers (HCWs) are an important source of nosocomial influenza and therefore a priority target group for vaccination. Despite the fact that some European countries have high coverage rates such as UK (76.8% in season 2020/21), others continue to have low coverage rates for influenza vaccines. This study aims to estimate vaccination coverage in HCWs in Cyprus, an island country located in the Eastern M

Identification of wild-caught phlebotomine sand flies from Crete and Cyprus using DNA barcoding.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) are vectors of Leishmania spp., protozoan parasites responsible for a group of neglected diseases called leishmaniases. Two sand fly genera, Phlebotomus and Sergentomyia, contain species that are present in the Mediterranean islands of Crete and Cyprus where the visceral (VL), cutaneous (CL) and canine (CanLei) leishmaniases are a public health concern. The risk of transmission of different Leishmania species can be studied in an area by monitoring their vectors. Sand fly species are traditionally identified using morphological charact

Is nasal MRSA carriage a concern among African people and local communities in North Cyprus?

INTRODUCTION: The long-standing epidemic of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has proven to be a challenging problem to solve and is becoming even more complex in a globalized world where there is little evidence of AMR patterns among multinational communities. This study aimed to determine the frequency of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carriage among African and local students in Northern Cyprus. METHODOLOGY: Nasal swabs were collected from African and local students between October 2023 and December 2023. The clinical samples were screened for the presence of MRSA. AMR bac

Ambient climatic factors and term birthweight: A study of critical windows of exposure in the Republic of Cyprus.

BACKGROUND: Reduced birthweight is associated with adverse perinatal and long-term outcomes. A few studies examined the association between climatic factors and birthweight with inconsistent results probably due to differences in exposure assessment, statistical models, climatic parameters, and study populations. METHODS: We obtained data from the Republic of Cyprus birth registry from 2007 to 2020, and matched climatic exposures (i.e., temperature, relative humidity, temperature variability, humidity variability) by the hospital district at birth. We used distributed lag models to examine th

[An Endemic Plant of Cyprus, Origanum majorana: Is It A New Alternative Natural Product for Malaria Treatment?].

Malaria still remains to be a public health threat and one of the most important infectious diseases to get attention from World Health Organization. No domestic malaria cases have been reported on the island of Cyprus since 1948, as a result of successful elimination process. All of the malaria cases detected in recent years are imported cases. As known, hundreds of medicines are obtained from plants and traditional medicine are used in endemic places of malaria. The cause of malaria - Plasmodium parasites, are developing resistance to antimalarial drugs. Hence, research on plant extracts and

Coupling external with internal exposure metrics of trihalomethanes in young females from Kuwait and Cyprus.

The Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle Eastern regions are both understudied in terms of possible environmental health risks for their populations. Water scarcity and desalination treatment provide the general population of countries from these regions (e.g., Kuwait and Cyprus) with unique tap water characteristics. This study investigated the association between external (tap water and 24 h personal air samples) and internal (urine) THM exposure metrics that reflected information about THM-related habits and activities collected using questionnaires and time activity diaries. The study popu

A Cost-benefit Analysis of a Proposed Immigrant Latent Tuberculosis Infection Screening Program for Cyprus.

INTRODUCTION: The study explored the potential economic benefit of an expanded screening program of immigrants before entrance to Cyprus as a policy to reduce the overall cost of tuberculosis (TB). Thus, the aim of this study is to study whether screening all immigrants coming from countries (including European Union countries) with high incidence of tuberculosis would be in the economic interest of the Republic of Cyprus or not. METHODS: In order to assess whether it could be economically beneficial for Cyprus to expand the screening checks for TB to all immigrants coming from high prevalenc

Contribution of BRCA1 and BRCA2 germline mutations to the incidence of early-onset breast cancer in Cyprus.

In Cyprus, the prevalence of breast cancer associated with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in young women is unknown. In this study, we present the results of mutational analysis of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes in 26 Cypriot women diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 40. The entire coding regions, including splice sites, of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes were sequenced using cycle sequencing. We identified four pathogenic mutations: two in BRCA1 [c.1840A>T (K614X), c.5310delG (5429delG)] and two in BRCA2 [c.3531-3534delCAGC (3758del4), c.8755delG (8984delG)] in six of 26 unrelated patients.
