Screening for Asymptomatic Bacteriuria Before Cystoscopy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

CONTEXT: Controversy exists regarding whether routine screening of asymptomatic bacteriuria before cystoscopy reduces infectious complications. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether screening for asymptomatic bacteriuria and treating patients with positive results before cystoscopy reduces infectious complications compared with no screening. EVIDENCE ACQUI: We conducted a preregistered systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO CRD420251073042) searching MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, BASE, and the Cochrane Library up to July 16, 2025. Studies were eligible if they compared preprocedural urine cultur

Artificial intelligence advances in cystoscopy and imaging for bladder cancer: a narrative review.

Bladder cancer (BCa) diagnosis relies heavily on cystoscopy and imaging. Both have limited sensitivity and accuracy, particularly for muscle-invasive disease. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising tool for improving detection, grading, and staging by extracting imaging features that exceed human perception. We conducted a narrative review of peer-reviewed, English-language studies published between 2015 and 2025. We identified 75 articles and synthesized data from 35 key studies retrieved via PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Embase. Data were synthesized narratively, empha

Utility of preoperative urine cultures and cystoscopies before ureteral reimplantation in pediatrics.

BACKGROUND: Ureteral reimplantation remains the primary surgical method used for patients with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). Cystoscopy is commonly performed first to visualize anatomy and rule out possible abnormalities. Urine cultures may also be obtained. The objective of this study is to evaluate the prudency of preoperative urine cultures and cystoscopies in pediatric patients undergoing ureteral reimplantation. METHODS: Pediatric urologists were surveyed regarding collecting urine cultures in asymptomatic patients and cystoscopies before reimplantation. A retrospective review was also co

Injection bronchoplasty with carboxymethlycellulose with cystoscopy needle for neonatal persistent bronchopleural fistulae.

OBJECTIVE: We describe the novel use of injectable carboxymethylcellulose to close a persistent bronchopleural fistula (BPF) in a neonate who underwent an ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) after aborted fetoscopy. METHODS: In this case, a patient with laryngeal atresia underwent fetoscopy that was halted after concern for instruments within the mediastinum, and thus ultimately required an EXIT to establish an airway. Bilateral pneumothoraces and eventually multiple BPF were identified that continued to persist despite multiple attempts at removal of chest tubes over a four-week period. We

American Urogynecologic Society Consensus Statement: Cystoscopy at the Time of Prolapse Repair.

Injury to the urinary tract is a known risk of surgical repair of anterior and apical pelvic organ prolapse. Cystoscopy at the time of surgical prolapse repair is a low-risk procedure that can identify genitourinary tract injury by inspecting the bladder and urethra as well as by visualizing the ureters and ureteral efflux. There are several techniques to assist with visualization of ureteral efflux. Identifying injury intraoperatively may allow for mitigation of the morbidity of the injury. Universal cystoscopy should be performed at the time of all pelvic reconstructive surgeries, with the e

Options to Evaluate Ureter Patency at Cystoscopy in a World Without Indigo Carmine.

Intraoperative cystoscopy has been studied as a means to identify ureteral injuries at the time of gynecologic surgery. The majority of published studies investigating intraoperative cystoscopy have used indigo carmine to dye the urine to allow visualization of ureteral jets; unfortunately, however, this dye is currently not available in North America. The unavailability of indigo carmine may be a permanent reality that forces gynecologists to examine alternatives for the evaluation of ureteral integrity. Various alternative methods have been suggested, ranging from cystoscopy without dye to o

Analgetic Efficacy of Flurbiprofen Axcetil in Rigid Cystoscopy for Men: a Prospective Study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the analgesic effect of preprocedural flurbiprofen axetil on rigid cystoscopy-associated pain for men. METHODS: Fifty-two men scheduled for cystoscopy were recruited in this study. The effects of oxybuprocaine jelly alone or in combination with preprocedural flurbiprofen axetil, were compared. The pain intensity was assessed using visual analogue scale (VAS) scores during injecting oxybuprocaine jelly into the urethra, during inserting rigid cystoscope into the urethra, during viewing inside the urinary bladder, at the first urination after cystoscopy and at the first u

Role of cystoscopy and hydrodistention in the diagnosis of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome.

There are controversies about whether cystoscopy with or without hydrodistention (HD) plays a role in the diagnosis and treatment of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). We reviewed the recommendations of various societies and associations of greater impact in this complex disease, analyzing the indications, technique, findings and complications of this procedure.

Utility of chest radiography and cystoscopy in the evaluation of patients with localized prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Candidates for radical prostatectomy have been frequently evaluated with chest radiography and occasionally with cystoscopy. The utility of these studies was assessed. METHODS: A retrospective review of 236 cases of radical prostatectomy performed over 5 years was conducted. Chest x-ray results were correlated with certain comorbidities believed to be risk factors for radiographic abnormalities, including hypertension, cardiac disease, pulmonary problems, and tobacco use. Cystoscopic findings were analyzed with regard to urologic history and urinalysis results. RESULTS: Chest rad

Ureteral stents: exchange under fluoroscopic control as an effective alternative to cystoscopy.

From September 1991 to February 1993, in 83 patients (74 women and nine men, aged 24-86 years), 166 double-J ureteral stents (initially placed to treat fistulas or stenoses located within the inferior third of the ureter) were exchanged during 127 procedures. Stents were extracted from the bladder through the urethra under fluoroscopic monitoring by using a lasso made of a 0.018-inch guide wire and a 7-F catheter. Then a new stent was placed over a 0.035-inch guide wire that had been previously coiled in the renal pelvis. Exchange was successful in 161 (97%) of 165 stents.

Contemporary Role for Blue Light Cystoscopy Across the Bladder Cancer Disease Spectrum.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to synthesize recent evidence and accounts evaluating the utility of blue light cystoscopy (BLC) across the disease spectrum of bladder cancer, including its diagnostic, surveillance, and post-treatment uses, as well as its outpatient applications, economic impact, patient perspectives, and future directions. RECENT FINDINGS: While initial studies on BLC suggested an advantage over traditional cystoscopy in terms of diagnostic power and recurrence rates for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, recent studies are more equivocal on its benefits and suggest that

Cystoscopy-assisted urolith retrieval via a perineal urethrostomy stoma in male cats.

ObjectivesWe sought to characterize cystoscopy-assisted urolith retrieval via a perineal urethrostomy stoma (CUPU) initially in a cadaveric model and then in clinical cases. We hypothesized that a CUPU would provide a reasonable alternative to the traditional approach of performing a cystotomy after perineal urethrostomy in male cats with complex or recurrent urolithiasis-associated urethral obstruction (UO).MethodsA perineal urethrostomy (PU) was performed in 20 male cat cadavers. A randomly assigned number of synthetic calculi (SynC) was placed retrograde into the urinary bladder, and an end

Does cystoscopy method affect the investigation of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis?

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Cystoscopic investigation to identify associated histological findings of increased mast cells in the detrusor muscle has been recommended by the European Society for the Study of Bladder Pain Syndrome (ESSIC) in the investigation of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC). The aim of this study was to identify if the cystoscopy approach impacts the biopsy results when investigating women presenting with symptoms of BPS/IC. METHODS: We performed a single-centre retrospective analysis of 300 bladder biopsy reports from 2015 to 2018 from women undergoin

Report of case: Partial ureteral obstruction masked by diuretics during intraoperative cystoscopy.

Injury to the lower urinary tract is a potential complication in all major vaginal and urogynecologic surgical procedures. Several authors have recommended the routine use of intraoperative cystoscopy during urogynecologic procedures. To evaluate possible injury to the lower urinary tract during intraoperative cystoscopy, the concomitant use of diuretics with indigo carmine dye has been advocated; efflux of dye is hypothesized to indicate functional patency of the urinary tract. This report describes a case in which a partial ureteral obstruction was present at the time of intraoperative cysto

Does instillation of lidocaine gel following flexible cystoscopy decrease the severity of post procedure symptoms? A randomised controlled trial assessing the efficacy of lidocaine gel post flexible cystoscopy.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether instillation of lidocaine gel both before and after flexible cystoscopy is more effective at reducing post procedural symptoms than instillation of lidocaine gel pre flexible cystoscopy alone. We hypothesise that inadequate urethral dwell time and dilution of lidocaine gel by the irrigation fluid during flexible cystoscopy limits its anaesthetic efficacy. Only one other study has attempted to reduce bothersome urinary symptoms through an intervention after flexible cystoscopy. METHODS: This was a randomised controlled trial in which patients were randomised 1:1 to
