We evaluated the feasibility and the benefits of total prostatectomy with suprapubic cystostomy drainage instead of a urethral Foley catheter. Of 65 consecutive total retropubic prostatectomies, 42 were carried out with the suprapubic cystostomy, and 23 with the urethral Foley catheter. Patients were asked postoperatively to complete a 5-cm visual analog scale on pain intensity related to the catheter and to urination after catheter removal. No problem related to cystostomy per se was observed. In the cystostomy group, over 85% and 69% of men perceived no urinary symptoms during catherization

PURPOSE: Hepatic hydatid cysts (HHCs) are a parasitic infestation caused by several species of Echinococcus. We examined the clinical features of HHCs and evaluated the results of various surgical procedures.
METHODS: One hundred and sixty-nine patients aged between 17 and 84 years underwent surgery for HHCs within a 12-year period. We recorded the demographic data, location of the cysts, surgical procedures used, morbidity, recurrences, and hospital stay.

Suprapubic cystostomy is recommended to patients with neuropathic bladder to prevent complications of long-term urethral catheter drainage. We present a 50-year-old male patient with tetraplegia who had long-term urethral catheter drainage. Following flexible cystoscopy, he developed a urine leak from the right side of the scrotum. Extraperitoneal incision of the bladder is recommended for difficult gynecologic-oncologic operations. Cystostomy facilitates dissection of the bladder and helps to prevent injury of the distal ureter. Six cases are reported (2 cervical carcinomas, 2 ovarian carcinomas, 1 vaginal carcinoma, 1 sarcoma) to illustrate the indication and technique of cystostomy.

A 4-month-old, male castrated Alpine White goat presented to the University of Guelph, Veterinary Teaching Hospital, with urolithiasis and a ruptured urethra. The authors report a case of idiopathic priapism successfully treated by needle aspiration and continuous perfusion with heparin solution. Two suprapubic cystostomy sets (Cystofix) for punction and drainage of each cavernosal body, were used. The original cystostomy tubes were inserted in the penis and attached to the continuous flow perfusion system. After the operation priapism disappeared and the penis was flaccid during the three days of perfusion. Two months after the operation, the patient had normal erections.

PURPOSE: The results of various immediate treatments of urethral injuries complicating a fractured pelvis were evaluated.

This is a report of a squamous cell carcinoma of the eviscerated bladder in a 52-year-old-Thai man. He had a history of pelvic fracture and failed urethroplasty. The bladder mucosa was eviscerated out from cystostomy tract after the spontaneous dislodging of the cystostomy tube. Squamous cell carcinoma developed at the eviscerated bladder 5 years later.
