Urethral catheterization is a common procedure among pediatric patients. Intravesical knotting of a polyethylene feeding tube used as a urethral catheter is rare. This report described such a complication in an infant who had urethral catheterization with 5 Fr feeding tube. Removal of the catheter necessitated cystotomy. This complication is preventable if the feeding tube is inserted only as short as possible to retrieve urine.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Minimally invasive approaches to manage bladder diverticula have become increasingly popular; however, intracorporeal identification of bladder diverticula may be challenging. We report a novel technique for diverticular illumination using flexible cystoscopy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: After management of bladder neck obstruction, two patients with bladder diverticula and persistent lower urinary tract symptoms underwent robot-assisted bladder diverticulectomy. Cystoscopic illumination was used in both cases to aid diverticular identification and dissection.
RESULTS: Our

The surgical repair of vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) over the last two decades has evolved from the transabdominal/transvaginal route to minimally invasive techniques of laparoscopy and robotic surgery. The indications for laparoscopic repair include supratrigonal fistulae, and stenotic/narrow vaginas that make vaginal access to the fistula site difficult. In the current published literature, comparable results have been reported with open surgery. The initial techniques were performed to simulate the open classic technique described by O'Conor, but with better imaging, exposure and magnificatio

Hydatid cyst is a zoonotic infection that is caused by Echinococcus granulosus and alveolaris, and that can result in endemics in rural regions. Infections caused by Echinococcus granulosus are more commonly seen in our country. In this retrospective study, we aimed at discussing the experience we have accumulated on pediatric pulmonary hydatid cyst cases over the last 6 years. Between 1995-2001, in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in Gaziantep University, 38 cases underwent 39 operations due to pulmonary and hepatic hydatid cysts. Of these, 24 were males and 14 were femal

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine devices (IUD) are widely used all over the world. One of the most serious complications is uterine perforation, and it is very rare for the IUD to penetrate the bladder after perforation. Here we report two cases of IUD migration into the bladder, and review the literature to analyze the possible causes and solutions of such complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: Case NO. 1 is a 37-year-old female who presented lower urinary tract symptoms for a year. Cystoscopy showed that a strip of metal penetrated into the bladder, and the surface was covered with stones. The patient u

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Use of synthetic mesh material in urogynecology for anti-incontinence surgery risks complications such as vaginal exposure and erosion. Although intravesical erosion is rare, management is complex with limited existing guidance, specifically following retropubic urethral suspension procedures.
METHODS: This is a 78-year-old female patient referred for management of intravesical mesh and staples. Prior surgical history included a retropubic urethral suspension and laparoscopic Burch urethropexy with Prolene mesh. Following years of persistent urinary symptoms, cyst

The study aimed to assess the biocompatibility and efficacy of a prostatic urethral lift (PUL) for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Human BPH-1 cells were co-cultured with implant anchors and sutures, and cytotoxicity was measured. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe adhesion and growth of cells and to evaluate implant biocompatibility. Fifteen male beagle dogs were randomly assigned to the surgical (n = 9) or sham-operated (n = 6) groups. The surgical group underwent cystotomy, and PUL was used to insert two implants in each lobe of the prostate to compress the enlarged

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: We present technical considerations and tips for repairing a complex branching vesicouterine and vesicovaginal fistula via a robotic approach.
METHODS: A 31-year-old female presented with constant urinary leakage following a vaginal birth after prior cesarean section. Evaluation with cystoscopy and cross-sectional imaging demonstrated a branching vesicouterine and vesicovaginal fistula. Repair with robotic-assisted approach was carried out. An intentional cystotomy was made with a tear-drop incision around the fistula tracts. The vesicouterine and vesicovaginal pl

Urinary bladder calculi comprise 5% of all urinary tract calculi. Giant bladder calculi are defined as a stone more than 100g in weight. However, giant bladder calculus weighted more than 500g is rare in current practice. We present a 60-year-old man who presented with dysuria, difficulty in urination, and suprapubic pain started four years ago. The plain radiology image showed big intravesical caliculi measured about 10x9cm. The calculi was removed via open cystolithotomy without postoperative complication. The caliculi weighed 750g. In conclusion, the main goal of treatment is to remove the

A 20 year-old woman was admitted to our clinic complaining of dyspnea, cough, chest pain and pleural effusion. The diagnosis of pulmonary hydatid cyst was made on the basis of parasitology laboratory findings, computed tomographic results and chest radiographic findings. A giant pulmonary hydatid cyst (33x14x12 cm) was located in the left lower lobe, which involved more than 90% of the lobe. The patient was treated surgically using cystotomy and capitonnage. This is a case of a giant pulmonary hydatid cyst published in the literature, which was surgically treated without a lobectomy, by preser

Feeding tubes (FTs) are commonly used as urinary catheters in neonates and children. Though generally safe, serious complications can result if the catheter spontaneously knots inside the bladder. We report a case of a spontaneous knotting of an intravesical Fr 6 FT in a late preterm female baby following urethral catheterization to collect a urine sample. The knotted catheter was removed via suprapubic cystotomy. The infant had good postoperative recovery.

Calcium phosphate urolithiasis and bilateral renal dysplasia was diagnosed in an 8-week-old Border Terrier with a history of urine dribbling, which had been observed from the time of birth. Most reported cases of calcium phosphate urolithiasis are secondary to hypercalcemic disorders, but this was not detected. In addition, despite renal dysplasia, there was no evidence of renal failure. After cystotomy and calculus removal, the dog has remained clinically normal.

INTRODUCTION: With safe obstetric practices now globally available, most vesico-vaginal fistulas (VVF) presenting in recent times are secondary to various gynecologic surgeries. Most of them are supra-trigonal in location. Laparoscopic repair of VVF is gaining ground as an alternative to open repair of VVF. In this study, we describe our initial experience with a novel technique of laparoscopic VVF repair involving a limited transverse cystotomy for access and a single-layered barbed suture closure of bladder.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty cases of supra-trigonal VVFs following gynecologic su

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate lower urinary tract injuries in women with ≥2 prior cesarean deliveries (CD) undergoing benign hysterectomies.
METHODS: This is a planned secondary analysis of all hysterectomies performed from 2000 to 2009 at Grady Memorial Hospital. Demographic, operative and postoperative data were reviewed. Women undergoing benign hysterectomies with ≥2 CD were compared with women with no prior CD. Categorical variables were analyzed using Chi-squared or Fisher's exact test, while Student's t test was used for continuous variables. Logistic regression was used for

The intravesical and extravesical techniques for ureteral reimplantation, traditionally described, cannot be applied to a very small, contracted bladder, especially in the morbidly obese patient. An alternative approach using a pull-through technique of ureterocystostomy is described in 6 patients with excellent 2-year follow-up.

A novel technique for simultaneous measurements of pressure and cross-sectional area (CA) in the female urethra, denoted Urethral Pressure Reflectometry (UPR), was devised. A very thin and highly flexible polyurethane-bag was placed in the urethra. A pump applied increasing and decreasing pressures to the polyurethane-bag and thereby opened and closed the urethra. Sound waves were continually sent into the polyurethane-bag and the cross-sectional area (CA) of the bag (urethra) could be measured from the reflections with Acoustic Reflectometry. The CA of the bag was measured for each mm of the

Multiple large bladder stones resulting in complete procidentia present unique operative challenges. A 71-year-old postmenopausal multipara was admitted to the intensive care unit for urosepsis. A firm irreducible 15 x 10 x 10 cm procidentia was noted on exam with surface erythema, erosions, and edema. A computed tomography scan of the pelvis reported a staghorn calculus in the right renal pelvis and a large calcified fibroid uterus which had prolapsed completely out of the pelvis. After resolution of her urosepsis, the patient was taken to the operating room for a vaginal hysterectomy and sur
