A 39-year-old man had typical cutaneous focal mucinosis on the left forearm. The fibroblasts in the myxomatous lesion had many cytoplasmic vesicles, and on electron microscopy, these were compatible with condensing vacuoles or secretory granules. The fibroblasts in this case were considered to be mucoblasts involved in the over-production of the ground substance, that was mainly composed of hyaluronic acid.

PURPOSE: To elucidate the pathogenesis of macular hole retinal detachment (RD) in highly myopic eyes by investigating the ultrastructure of surgically removed epiretinal membranes (ERM).

Superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1) from nitrogen-fixing Azotobacter chroococcum was purified and identified as being similar to the manganese SOD of other procaryotes. The enzyme was relatively thermostable and insensitive to cyanide. A molecular weight of approximately 33 000 was estimated. Superoxide dismutase was found to be cytoplasmic (not bound to cell membranes) in A. chroococcum, but some enzyme was released by sonication of membrane vesicles.

We report the tuft cells in the main excretory duct epithelia of rat salivary glands. These cells exhibit similar fundamental characteristics in the salivary glands and in other organs.
