Dacryocystitis in a Patent Nasolacrimal Drainage System: A Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Acute dacryocystitis is an acute infection and the lacrimal sac secondary to pathogenic microorganism growth within the stagnant fluid in the lacrimal sac secondary to nasolacrimal duct obstruction. METHODS: A literature review was conducted on the PubMed database using the following search terms "dacryocystic retention" and "dacryocystitis" or "dacryolith" or "lacrimal duct" or "pseudo-dacryocystitis". RESULTS: The literature review suggests that dacryocystitis in a patent nasolacrimal drainage system can stem from diverse causes including the mechanical impaction by dacryolit

Epstein-Barr Virus-Associated Acute Dacryocystic Retention.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) associated dacryocystic retention presents with an acute swelling in the lacrimal sac area with epiphora and lymphadenopathy. The patient would usually have a preceding history of infectious mononucleosis with clinical features of fever, pharyngitis, preauricular and cervical lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, subclinical hepatitis, nausea, and palatine petechiae. The present case is of a 3-year-old child who presented with a sudden painless swelling in the lacrimal sac region with epiphora. Investigations and a biopsy helped in establishing the diagnosis of EBV-asso

Outcome of Transcanalicular Endolaser and External Dacryocystorhinostomy in Chronic Dacryocystitis.

Nasolacrimal duct obstruction due to chronic dacryocystitis is the most common cause of epiphora. Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is the treatment of choice for chronic dacryocystitis. This can be carried out by external, endoscopic and endolaser surgical approach. Though external DCR is still a gold standard and most popular method, the latest procedure of less traumatic DCR is transcanalicular approach. The study was done to evaluate the outcome of Transcanalicular Endolaser DCR regarding epiphora and surgery related complications by measuring anatomical success rate (patency assessed by irrigat

External and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy in chronic dacryocystitis: comparison of results.

To compare external and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy outcomes in patients with chronic dacryocystitis, a total of 103 patients with the complaint of epiphora and diagnosed as chronic dacryocystitis were included in the study. We performed external dacryocystorhinostomy on 55 patients under local anesthesia and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy on 48 patients under general anesthesia by means of drill and placed silicon stents to all the patients. The patients were examined endoscopically, at postoperative intervals of 1 week, first month, third month, sixth month and the first year. The pat

Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy in cases of dacryocystitis due to atrophic rhinitis.

Atrophic rhinitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the nose, which is more common in India. Chronic dacryocystitis is its rare complication. The authors found four cases of chronic dacryocystitis from March 2002 to October 2003 due to atrophic rhinitis. It was diagnosed clinically by the regurgitation test and lacrimal syringing. These cases were treated conservatively for a period of six weeks to make the nasal mucosa healthier and were then subjected to endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (end-DCR) under local anaesthesia. The procedure was found to be more difficult due to bleeding and the

[Sarcoidosis of the paranasal sinuses as the etiology of therapy refractory dacryocystitis].

BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is a chronic systemic disease of unknown etiology characterized by non-caseating granulomatous inflammation of various organs. The clinical findings when nasal mucosa is involved include nasal crusting, epistaxis, pain and/or anosmia, nasal polyps, or submucosal nodularity. CASE REPORT: We describe a case of sarcoidosis of the paranasal sinuses. In a 33-year-old man, the first symptom was therapy resistant putrid dacryocystitis. Further there had been symptoms of chronic sinusitis. A CT scan revealed swelling of the mucosa in the anterior ethmoid, frontal recess, and m

Atypical presentation of fungal dacryocystitis. A report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Candida albicans has only rarely been implicated in nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Its association with dacryoliths is well known, but it is unclear whether it is an etiologic factor or is present as a result of the obstruction. FINDINGS: The authors report 2 cases of fungal dacryocystitis that were not associated with dacryolith formation and where Candida species appear to be the primary etiologic agent. CONCLUSION: The possibility of a fungal infection should be considered in the evaluation of "routine" chronic dacryocystitis, particularly in the presence of corneal ulceration

Probe capture-based tNGS for microbial detection of dacryocystitis.

Dacryocystitis is one of the common infectious diseases in ophthalmology. This study evaluates microbial distribution in lacrimal sac secretions using targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) and compares it with traditional culture methods. Conducted at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, 31 patients with confirmed dacryocystitis were enrolled. Lacrimal sac secretions were collected during endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy and analyzed using both tNGS and conventional bacterial cultures. Microbial diversity was assessed, and antibiotic susceptibility was evaluated for cultured isolates. We comp

Case report of Aspergillus niger dacryocystitis in immunocompetent adult.

We present the case of a 28-year-old man with no personal history of interest and an episode of acute right dacryocystitis despite medical treatment. He underwent dacryocystectomy, in which samples were obtained for anatomopathological and microbiological studies with results of Aspergillus niger. Acute Aspergillus dacryocystitis is very rare in immunocompetent adult. After the operation, the condition resolved without recurrence after 1 year without adjuvant treatment.

Acute dacryocystitis retention: a case report and literature review.

Acute dacryocystitis retention (ADR) is an unusual entity that contributes to an incorrect diagnosis and treatment. We describe a case of acute dacryocystitis retention occurring in a 61-year-old diabetic male who presented with severe pain, swelling, and inflammatory signs above the left medial canthal ligament tendon. He had no previous history of epiphora. Computed tomography scan indicated acute dacryocystitis. Clinical treatment resulted in complete resolution of the condition. Syringing one month after the acute episode indicated a patent lacrimal excretory system. The temporary obstruct

A novel case of Raoultella planticola - associated acute dacryocystitis.

This study aims to report an acute dacryocystitis associated with Raoultella planticola infection. The patient's medical records and laboratory were thoroughly assessed. A thorough literature search was performed in PubMed database. An additional search was made in Google Scholar to complete the collected items. This is the first recorded case of acute dacryocystitis attributed to Raoultella planticola infection. A limited number of studies has related this pathogen with conjunctivitis. Acute dacryocystitis on rare occasions can also be caused by atypical organisms. Swabs must be obtained and

Fibrous Dysplasia-like Lacrimal Sac Tumor Associated With Dacryocystitis.

A 72-year-old woman who presented with right-sided epiphora and conjunctivitis underwent a probing and irrigation procedure with normal results. She improved with antibiotic-steroid drops. A swelling in the medial canthal region completely resolved. One year later, she returned with symptoms of dacryocystitis. An external dacryocystorhinostomy was performed. Characteristic dacryoliths were removed from the sac lumen, and biopsy of the sac wall showed spicules of lamellar bone within a fibrous stroma. Diagnosed as fibrous dysplasia of the lacrimal sac, this rare entity represents the second suc
