Monitoring arts and psychomotor therapies: Further development and validation of the Self-expression and Emotion-Regulation in Arts and Psychomotor Therapies Scale (SERAPTS).

BACKGROUND: The present study is an extension of previous research, which resulted in the development of a valid, reliable and user-friendly tool for monitoring art therapy. The purpose of this study was to examine the extended reliability and sensitivity to change of the adapted version of the above scale, now called the Self-expression and Emotion Regulation in Arts and Psychomotor Therapies Scale (SERAPTS) for art, dance, drama, music and psychomotor therapy. METHODS: A pre-post design study was conducted on adult patients diagnosed with emotion regulation problems or personality disorder(

Opsoclonus myoclonus.

Opsoclonus myoclonus is a rare autoimmune condition characterized by cerebellar degeneration. It occurs most often as a paraneoplastic syndrome when a cancer remote to the brain induces cerebellar dysfunction that is unrelated to metastases. Half of all cases occur in children with a neuroblastoma. Most adults with opsoclonus myoclonus have neoplastic, infectious, metabolic, or idiopathic etiologies. Signs of cerebellar dysfunction noted at presentation include opsoclonus, myoclonus and ataxia, hence the name "dancing eyes, dancing feet syndrome." Opsoclonus is characterized by rapid, involunt

Dancing Eye Syndrome associated with spontaneous recovery and normal neurodevelopment.

Five patients with spontaneously recovering Dancing Eye Syndrome/Opsoclonus Myoclonus Syndrome are described. Age at presentation ranged from 4 to 19 months. Four had symptoms of fever and a coryzal illness within days to a few weeks prior to the onset. One of the 4 also had varicella zoster 4 weeks before presentation. All had opsoclonus, myoclonus/ataxia and irritability. Associated infective agents identified were Coxsackie virus and rotavirus. Spontaneous improvement of symptoms started within 9 days of presentation and total duration of illness ranged from 10 to 24 days. Developmental pro

A Review of the Clinical Evidence for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of published guidelines related to the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for Huntington's disease (HD). We conducted a review of the literature to summarize the available evidence for various mind-body practices and nutraceuticals. METHODS: PubMed and Cochrane Library electronic databases were searched independently from inception to February 2019 by two independent raters. Studies were classified for the level of evidence (Class I, II, III, or IV) according to the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) classification scale. RESULTS: Randomized cont

Effects of traditional Thai folk dance combined with cognitive stimulation program on behavior and cognition among older adults with cognitive decline: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with mild behavioral impairment (MBI) are at the higher risk of developing dementia compared to those without MBI, leading to decreased quality of life (QoL). Addressing MBI in older adults provides valuable opportunities to prevent dementia. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the effects of traditional Thai folk dance combined with a cognitive stimulation program on MBI, QoL, subjective cognitive decline (SCD), and cognitive functioning in older Thai adults. DESIGN: Single-blinded, two-armed, randomized controlled trial, with a three-month follow-up period.

Sleep Characteristics in Dance Students Related to Psychological Inflexibility.

Introduction: Dance, as a performance activity, is associated with various problems. Among these challenges, sleep disturbances are notably prevalent. Aims: This study aimed to explore the potential relationship between sleep characteristics-specifically chronotype and subjective sleep quality- and psychological inflexibility in dance students. Methods: This research adopted a cross-sectional design using non-probabilistic sampling. The data were collected in paper format by visiting public conservatories and private academies, and online. One hundred fourteen dance students, with a mean age o

Overcoming the Social Stigma on Mood Disorders with Dancing.

In our society, the social stigma against people who suffer from mood disorders is a very powerful factor that negatively affects the healing of patient. He is often isolated from the others for the fear of being judged "fool, crazy or dangerous" or discriminated and emarginated for his mental health problem. For this reason, a cornerstone of mood disorder rehabilitation is the bringing out of the patient from his isolation, the reintegration of the user in the social context with the increase and the improvement in the quality of interpersonal relationships in the family and in the external c

Minimum toe clearance variability in older adults with mild cognitive impairment: Differences to healthy controls and effects of a dance intervention.

BACKGROUND: Falls in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are a major health issue. For healthy individuals, higher variability in minimum toe clearance (MTC) during gait is associated with the risk of tripping-related falls and dance intervention reduces MTC variability. Such empirical evidence is lacking for individuals with MCI. RESEARCH QUESTION: We aimed to assess differences in MTC variability between healthy older adults and older adults with MCI. Furthermore, we analysed the effects of a six-month dance intervention on MTC variability in older adults with MCI. METHODS: W

[Childhood dancing eye syndrome in occult neuroblastoma].

The case of a two year-old boy is described with dancing eyes syndrome (DES) together with ganglioneuroblastoma. Surgical removal of the tumour and ACTH therapy resulted in rapid improvement, and an almost symptome-free condition. The literature is reviewed. Need of vigorous search for an occult neuroblastoma in DES is pointed out, since the early diagnosis and tumour's surgery can significantly improve the outcome.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Although mindfulness-based mind-body therapy (MBMBT) is an effective non-surgical treatment for patients with non-specific low back pain (NLBP), the best MBMBT mode of treatment for NLBP patients has not been identified. Therefore, a network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted to compare the effects of different MBMBTs in the treatment of NLBP patients. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) applying MBMBT for the treatment of NLBP patients, with all of the

Aerobic dance during chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer with cognitive impairment (ADANC): protocol for an assessor-blinded randomised clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic exercise has been used to improve cancer-related dysfunction. Recent studies suggest that exercise after chemotherapy can improve cancer-related cognitive impairment. However, the effect of exercise during chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer remains unclear. Aerobic dance is a comprehensive form of aerobic exercise which may be more easily accepted by female patients. The Aerobic Dance Against NeuroCognitive decline (ADANC) trial is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of aerobic dance during chemotherapy on breast cancer-related cognitive impairment. It aim

[Neurorehabilitation in Parkinson's disease : focus on physical therapy].

Parkinson's disease affects around 6 million people worldwide. It causes both motor and non-motor symptoms. Since there is no cure, medical treatment aims to improve patients' quality of life. Combined with drug treatment, neurorehabilitation plays a major role in this field, thanks to its multidisciplinary approach. Practices such as physical therapy, Tai Chi, dance, and music therapy have shown positive results throughout the course of the disease. In addition, innovations such as augmented reality or specific treadmill training have interesting potential. However, further research is needed
