Utilizing a language model to improve online dynamic data collection in P300 spellers.

P300 spellers provide a means of communication for individuals with severe physical limitations, especially those with locked-in syndrome, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, P300 speller use is still limited by relatively low communication rates due to the multiple data measurements that are required to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of event-related potentials for increased accuracy. Therefore, the amount of data collection has competing effects on accuracy and spelling speed. Adaptively varying the amount of data collection prior to character selection has been shown to impro

Development of a Data Collection Instrument for Violent Patient Encounters against Healthcare Workers.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare and social workers have the highest incidence of workplace violence of any industry. Assaults toward healthcare workers account for nearly half of all nonfatal injuries from occupational violence. Our goal was to develop and evaluate an instrument for prospective collection of data relevant to emergency department (ED) violence against healthcare workers. METHODS: Participants at a high-volume tertiary care center were shown 11 vignettes portraying verbal and physical assaults and responded to a survey developed by the research team and piloted by ED personnel address

The North of England Multiple Pregnancy Register: five-year results of data collection.

From 1998 the population-based North of England Multiple Pregnancy Register (MPR) has collected data on all multiple pregnancies in the region from the earliest point of ascertainment in the pregnancy. This article describes the development of the MPR and the findings of the first 5 years of data collection. Mothers now give explicit consent for their inclusion with named data, in accordance with section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2001. During 1998 to 2002, 2310 twin pregnancies were registered, with an increasing twinning rate of 13.6 to 16.6 per 1000 maternities. Chorionicity ascer

National Pharmaceutical Stockpile drill analysis using XML data collection on wireless Java phones.

This study describes an informatics effort to track subjects through a National Pharmaceutical Stockpile (NPS) distribution drill. The drill took place in Seattle on 1/24/2002. Washington and the State Department of Health are among the first in the nation to stage a NPS drill testing the distribution of medications to mock patients, thereby testing the treatment capacity of the plan given a post-anthrax exposure scenario. The goal of the Public Health Informatics Group at the University of Washington (www.phig.washington.edu) was to use informatics approaches to monitor subject numbers and el

[The Wittmaack temporal bone collection and possibilities for cataloguing with electronic data processing].

Karl Wittmaack, head of the otology department at Greifswald (1904-1908) and professor of otorhinolaryngology at the universities of Jena (1908-1925) und Hamburg (1926-1946) created a unique histological collection of human and animal temporal bones that is thought to be the largest of its kind in the world. The serial sections of more than 1700 human temporal bones still represent current otological problems--many of which are now rare but are still encountered--such as tuberculosis, lues or diphtheria of the ear. Complications following acute otitis--which were much more frequent and dangero

Frailty indices based on routinely collected data: a scoping review.

A frailty index (FI) is a frailty assessment tool calculated as the proportion of the number of health-related deficits an individual has to the total number of variables in the index. Routinely collected clinical and administrative data can be used as sources of deficits to automatically calculate FIs. This scoping review aimed to evaluate the current research landscape on routine data-based FIs. We searched seven databases to find literature published in 2013-2023. Main inclusion criteria were original research articles on FIs constructed from routine data, with deficits in at least two of t

Collecting accurate secondary foodscape data. A reflection on the trials and tribulations.

In a special issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (2009, 36(4S)), themed around the measurement of food and physical activity environments, Brownson, Hoehner, Day, Forsyth, and Sallis (2009, 118) made a plea for increased attention to be paid to the difficulties and complexities associated with the gathering of secondary data, and its subsequent refinement for use. Some of the peculiarities involved with the gathering and refining of secondary data, in particular data on the locations of food outlets in North East England are discussed in this paper. 'Foodscape' data is often i

Laboratory and On-field Data Collected by a Head Impact Monitoring Mouthguard.

Although concussion continues to be a major source of acute and chronic injury in automotive, athletic and military arenas, concussion injury mechanisms and risk functions are ill-defined. This lack of definition has hindered efforts to develop standardized concussion monitoring, safety testing and protective countermeasures. Recent research has provided evidence of the role of repetitive head impact exposure as a predisposing factor for the onset of concussion using developed instrumented helmets and mouthguards. To overcome this knowledge gap, we have developed, tested and deployed a head imp

Reliability of routinely collected hospital data for child maltreatment surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Internationally, research on child maltreatment-related injuries has been hampered by a lack of available routinely collected health data to identify cases, examine causes, identify risk factors and explore health outcomes. Routinely collected hospital separation data coded using the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) system provide an internationally standardised data source for classifying and aggregating diseases, injuries, causes of injuries and related health conditions for statistical purposes. However, there has been limited research t

Collecting household water usage data: telephone questionnaire or diary?

BACKGROUND: Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA), a modelling approach, is used to assess health risks. Inputs into the QMRA process include data that characterise the intensity, frequency and duration of exposure to risk(s). Data gaps for water exposure assessment include the duration and frequency of urban non-potable (non-drinking) water use. The primary objective of this study was to compare household water usage results obtained using two data collection tools, a computer assisted telephone interview (CATI) and a 7-day water activity diary, in order to assess the effect of differ

Primary care risk stratification in COPD using routinely collected data: a secondary data analysis.

Most clinical contacts with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients take place in primary care, presenting opportunity for proactive clinical management. Electronic health records could be used to risk stratify diagnosed patients in this setting, but may be limited by poor data quality or completeness. We developed a risk stratification database algorithm using the DOSE index (Dyspnoea, Obstruction, Smoking and Exacerbation) with routinely collected primary care data, aiming to calculate up to three repeated risk scores per patient over five years, each separated by at least one

The Austrian MS database and the Austrian MS cohort : A national effort towards data harmonization and prospective data collection.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is treated with various disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) with differing efficacy and risks, yet the disease course varies markedly within and between individuals. Defining optimal treatment strategies through randomized trials is impractical because of the required sample sizes, costs and long follow-up. Large multicenter registries and prospective observational cohorts are therefore essential but demand harmonized, standardized, user-friendly data capture with rigorous quality control and data protection. OBJECTIVE: This project aims to establish standar

Strengthening data collection for neglected tropical diseases: What data are needed for models to better inform tailored intervention programmes?

Locally tailored interventions for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are becoming increasingly important for ensuring that the World Health Organization (WHO) goals for control and elimination are reached. Mathematical models, such as those developed by the NTD Modelling Consortium, are able to offer recommendations on interventions but remain constrained by the data currently available. Data collection for NTDs needs to be strengthened as better data are required to indirectly inform transmission in an area. Addressing specific data needs will improve our modelling recommendations, enabling

Parent-reported phenotype data on chromosome 6 aberrations collected via an online questionnaire: data consistency and data availability.

BACKGROUND: Even with the introduction of new genetic techniques that enable accurate genomic characterization, knowledge about the phenotypic spectrum of rare chromosomal disorders is still limited, both in literature and existing databases. Yet this clinical information is of utmost importance for health professionals and the parents of children with rare diseases. Since existing databases are often hampered by the limited time and willingness of health professionals to input new data, we collected phenotype data directly from parents of children with a chromosome 6 disorder. These parents w
