Leveraging crowdsourcing methods to collect qualitative data in addiction science: Narratives of non-medical prescription opioid, heroin, and fentanyl use.

BACKGROUND: Online crowdsourcing methods have proved useful for studies of diverse designs in the behavioral and addiction sciences. The remote and online setting of crowdsourcing research may provide easier access to unique participant populations and improved comfort for these participants in sharing sensitive health or behavioral information. To date, few studies have evaluated the use of qualitative research methods on crowdsourcing platforms and even fewer have evaluated the quality of data gathered. The purpose of the present analysis was to document the feasibility and validity of using

Determining Environmental Factors That Influence the Occurrence of Sarcoptic Mange in Bare-Nosed Wombats (Vombatus ursinus) Using Citizen Science Data.

Sarcoptic mange is a significant welfare and conservation issue in a diverse range of mammalian species, wombats being some of the most impacted. Cases have been observed in bare-nosed (Vombatus ursinus) and southern hairy-nosed (Lasiorhinus latifrons) wombats but not the northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii). Here, we map the prevalence and model habitat suitability for sarcoptic mange that infests wombats across Australia. Presence-only data was isolated from wombat observation records entered into the citizen science project Wombat Survey and Analysis Tool (WomSAT). Environment

Assessing tick attachments to humans with citizen science data: spatio-temporal mapping in Switzerland from 2015 to 2021 using spatialMaxent.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are the primary vectors of numerous zoonotic pathogens, transmitting more pathogens than any other blood-feeding arthropod. In the northern hemisphere, tick-borne disease cases in humans, such as Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis, have risen in recent years, and are a significant burden on public healthcare systems. The spread of these diseases is further reinforced by climate change, which leads to expanding tick habitats. Switzerland is among the countries in which tick-borne diseases are a major public health concern, with increasing incidence rates reported in

Predicting West Nile virus transmission in North American bird communities using phylogenetic mixed effects models and eBird citizen science data.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-transmitted disease of birds that has caused bird population declines and can spill over into human populations. Previous research has identified bird species that infect a large fraction of the total pool of infected mosquitoes and correlate with human infection risk; however, these analyses cover small spatial regions and cannot be used to predict transmission in bird communities in which these species are rare or absent. Here we present a mechanistic model for WNV transmission that predicts WNV spread (R0) in any bird community in North Americ

Citizen science through a recreational underwater diving project supports the collection of large-scale marine litter data: The Oceania case study.

In recent years, a growing body of literature on seafloor macro-litter has been produced worldwide. However, the spatial coverage of these studies is still limited and highly unbalanced, resulting in considerable knowledge gaps in some regions. To address this lack of information in Oceania, we extracted data from the Citizen Science project Dive Against Debris® to characterize marine debris collected by volunteer scuba divers on the coastal seafloor. Overall, the average litter density was 58.22 items/100m2, with plastics accounting for approximately 50 % of the total abundance and Single Use

A data science approach to drug safety: Semantic and visual mining of adverse drug events from clinical trials of pain treatments.

Clinical trials are the basis of Evidence-Based Medicine. Trial results are reviewed by experts and consensus panels for producing meta-analyses and clinical practice guidelines. However, reviewing these results is a long and tedious task, hence the meta-analyses and guidelines are not updated each time a new trial is published. Moreover, the independence of experts may be difficult to appraise. On the contrary, in many other domains, including medical risk analysis, the advent of data science, big data and visual analytics allowed moving from expert-based to fact-based knowledge. Since 12 yea

Evaluating spatial and temporal patterns of tick exposure in the United States using community science data submitted through a smartphone application.

Research initiatives that engage the public (i.e., community science or citizen science) increasingly provide insights into tick exposures in the United States. However, these data have important caveats, particularly with respect to reported travel history and tick identification. Here, we assessed whether a smartphone application, The Tick App, provides reliable and novel insights into tick exposures across three domains - travel history, broad spatial and temporal patterns of species-specific encounters, and tick identification. During 2019-2021, we received 11,424 tick encounter submission

Early identification of patients with chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology (CKDu) in Anuradhapura district of Sri Lanka using data science algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Over the past two decades, there has been a noticeable emergence of chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology (CKDu) as a substantial contributor to the burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in rural Sri Lanka where early CKDu patients have less symptoms. This study was conducted to develop data science models to identify whether a selected individual is healthy or suffering from CKD and to determine the severity of patients with CKDu. METHODS: Seventeen attributes were considered for 276 individuals and Logistic Regression, Feed-Forward Neural Network (FFNN), Probabilistic Neu

Scrutinizing science to save lives: uncovering flaws in the data linking L-type calcium channels blockers to CRAC channels and heart failure.

Hypertension is estimated to affect almost 1 billion people globally and significantly increases risk of myocardial infarction, heart failure, stroke, retinopathy and kidney disease. One major front line therapy that has been used for over 50 years involves L-type Ca 2+ channel blockers (LCCBs). One class of LCCBs is the dihydropyridine family, with amlodipine being widely prescribed regardless of gender, race, ethnicity or age. In 2020, Johnson et al. 7 reported that all LCCBs significantly increased the risk of heart failure, and attributed this effect to non-canonical activation of store-op

Identification of recurrent genetic patterns from targeted sequencing panels with advanced data science: a case-study on sporadic and genetic neurodegenerative diseases.

BACKGROUND: Targeted Next Generation Sequencing is a common and powerful approach used in both clinical and research settings. However, at present, a large fraction of the acquired genetic information is not used since pathogenicity cannot be assessed for most variants. Further complicating this scenario is the increasingly frequent description of a poli/oligogenic pattern of inheritance showing the contribution of multiple variants in increasing disease risk. We present an approach in which the entire genetic information provided by target sequencing is transformed into binary data on which w

Use of ceramic synthetic allografts in spine surgery: a narrative review with early basic science and clinic data of novel nanosynthetic bone graft.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: As the global population ages, degenerative spinal disorders are on the rise, leading to an increased focus on optimizing spinal fusion therapies. Despite the high success rate of iliac crest bone autografts, their usage is hampered by donor site morbidity and limited supply. The objective of this review is to assess the viability of ceramic-based synthetic materials as alternatives in spinal fusion surgeries. METHODS: A review of national databases was performed using key terms "allograft", "nanosynthetic", "spine", and "surgery" for literature from 1900 to 2024. St

A data science-led strategy to assess the subnational burden of sepsis using official records: a longitudinal description and cross-sectional demonstration in Chile.

Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by an aberrant host response to an infecting pathogen. Several international efforts have been launched to address its staggering burden and escalating costs. A disconnection occurs when translating current global, regional, and national estimates into local and subnational quantifications of their burden. Given the level of completeness of civil registration and vital statistics in Chile, an opportunity arose to calculate, rather than estimate, the burden of sepsis by subnational administrative division. Thus, for the first time, a data sc

Tuberculosis in households with infectious cases in Kampala city: Harnessing health data science for new insights on an ancient disease with persistent, unresolved problems.

Tuberculosis (TB) is prevalent in Uganda and overlaps with a high rate of HIV/TB coinfection. While nearly all hospital-based TB cases in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, show clear TB symptoms, 30% or more of undiagnosed TB cases found through active screening are asymptomatic. Additionally, the host risk factors for TB in Kampala cannot be distinguished from environmental risk factors. These TB-specific challenges are just part of the complexity, especially in areas with high HIV/AIDS burden. Data science techniques, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms

A Data Science Approach to Estimating the Frequency of Driving Cessation Associated Suicide in the US: Evidence From the National Violent Death Reporting System.

Driving cessation is a common transition experienced by aging adults that confers both a symbolic and literal loss of independence due to the central role of automobiles for mobility in the US. Prior research has shown that driving cessation has negative implications for mental health, social participation, and access to healthcare. Given these sequelae of driving cessation and prior work showing that late-life transitions related to independence (e.g., transitioning into residential care) are associated with suicide, we sought to estimate the frequency of driving cessation associated suicide.

A Systems Science Approach to Understanding Polytrauma and Blast-Related Injury: Bayesian Network Model of Data From a Survey of the Florida National Guard.

We sought to further define the epidemiology of the complex, multiple injuries collectively known as polytrauma/blast-related injury (PT/BRI). Using a systems science approach, we performed Bayesian network modeling to find the most accurate representation of the complex system of PT/BRI and identify key variables for understanding the subsequent effects of blast exposure in a sample of Florida National Guard members (1,443 deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom and 1,655 not deployed) who completed an online survey during the period from 2009 to 2010. We found that pos

The role of real-world data and real-world evidence in advancing regulatory science and targeted therapeutics: a narrative review from the United States perspective.

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) encounter feasibility gaps when addressing rare genetic disorders and molecularly defined patient subgroups. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has increasingly integrated real-world evidence (RWE) into the regulatory lifecycle. The objective of this article is to analyze the regulatory evolution following the 21st Century Cures Act and evaluate landmark drug approvals and expansions where real-world data (RWD) provided the primary or supplementary evidentiary foundation. A structured search of electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, and Web of Sc

Assessing the Impact and Cost-Effectiveness of Exposome Interventions on Alzheimer's Disease: A Review of Agent-Based Modeling and Other Data Science Methods for Causal Inference.

Background: The exposome (e.g., totality of environmental exposures) and its role in Alzheimer's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (AD/ADRD) are increasingly critical areas of study. However, little is known about how interventions on the exposome, including personal behavioral modification or policy-level interventions, may impact AD/ADRD disease burden at the population level in real-world settings and the cost-effectiveness of interventions. Methods: We performed a critical review to discuss the challenges in modeling exposome interventions on population-level AD/ADRD bu
