Visual analytics of surveillance data on foodborne vibriosis, United States, 1973-2010.

Foodborne illnesses caused by microbial and chemical contaminants in food are a substantial health burden worldwide. In 2007, human vibriosis (non-cholera Vibrio infections) became a notifiable disease in the United States. In addition, Vibrio species are among the 31 major known pathogens transmitted through food in the United States. Diverse surveillance systems for foodborne pathogens also track outbreaks, illnesses, hospitalization and deaths due to non-cholera vibrios. Considering the recognition of vibriosis as a notifiable disease in the United States and the availability of diverse sur

Using a Chord Diagram to Visualize Dynamics in Contraceptive Use: Bringing Data into Practice.

We applied a novel approach to visualizing contraceptive histories from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) contraceptive calendar to elucidate patterns of contraceptive switching and discontinuation (e.g., "churn" in contraceptive use across 2 points in time). Taking the contraceptive calendar from the 2014 Kenya DHS, we used R, an open source statistical programming platform, and the chorddiag package to create interactive chord diagrams to visualize contraceptive use trajectories, including switching and discontinuation, for all contraceptive types queried in the DHS. We present screen

How useful is population data for informing visual field progression rate estimation?

PURPOSE: Bayesian estimators allow the frequency of visual field progression rates in the population (the prior distribution) to constrain rate estimates for individuals. We examined the benefits of a prior distribution accounting for one of progression's major risk factors--whether intraocular pressure is treated--to gauge the maximum benefit expected from developing priors for other glaucoma risk factors. METHODS: Our prior distribution was derived from published data from either treated (matched-prior condition) or untreated (unmatched-prior condition) glaucoma patients. We simulated MD va

Development, validation, and visualization of a novel depression screening tool for hypertensive patients based on NHANES data: A cross-sectional study.

Hypertension and depression have a well-recognized bidirectional association, with comorbidity reducing antihypertensive medication adherence and elevating adverse health outcomes; depression affects 30% to 40% of hypertensive patients, far higher than the general population. However, validated, hypertension-specific depression screening tools based on machine learning (ML) are currently lacking. This study aimed to develop, validate, and visualize an ML-based depression screening tool for adult hypertensive patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted using 2005-2020 National Health and Nu

Quantitative mapping of geological samples by electron microprobe using mean atomic number (MAN) background corrections: method application, data processing and visualization.

Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and wavelength dispersive spectroscopy (WDS) are ubiquitous tools for chemical analysis of geological samples. Analysis type is often confined to quantitative but spatially-limited (∼0.5-2+ µm diameter) spot analysis, or qualitative but spatially-resolved mapping. This contribution outlines a method that combines the quantitative aspect of spot analyses with the spatial resolution of EPMA mapping and associated data processing and visualization workflows. The acquisition and processing of spatially-resolved, quantitative chemical maps of geological samples a

Effects of data-driven respiratory gating on visualization and quantification of breast and upper abdominal cancers in FDG PET/CT examinations.

OBJECTIVE: Data-driven respiratory gating (DDG) has recently been introduced to improve image quality in the PET portion of PET/CT examinations. The latest DDG system does not require any external equipment or extended examination time. In this study, we investigated the effects of the new DDG system on the visualization and quantification of breast and upper abdominal cancers, comparing the results with those obtained using the standard free-breathing (STD) PET protocol. METHODS: A total of 223 cancer lesions (138 breast and 85 upper abdominal) evaluated with FDG PET/CT were included in this

eXCube2: Explainable Brain-Inspired Spiking Neural Network Framework for Emotion Recognition from Audio, Visual and Multimodal Audio-Visual Data.

This paper introduces a biomimetic framework and novel brain-inspired AI (BIAI) models based on spiking neural networks (SNNs) for emotional state recognition from audio (speech), visual (face), and integrated multimodal audio-visual data. The developed framework, named eXCube2, uses a three-dimensional SNN architecture NeuCube that is spatially structured according to a human brain template. The BIAI models developed in eXCube2 are trainable on spatio- and spectro-temporal data using brain-inspired learning rules. Such models are explainable in terms of revealing patterns in data and are adap

Visual body size estimation in adolescent anorexia nervosa: Behavioural and neurophysiological data suggest intact visual perception and biased emotional attention.

Body image disturbance is a key symptom of anorexia nervosa (AN). AN patients report body dissatisfaction and overestimate their own body size in several tasks. This study aimed to clarify whether this overestimation arises from deficits in visual perception. To this end, 36 adolescent restrictive-type AN patients and 42 matched healthy controls performed metric and depictive body size estimation (BSE) tasks. Magneto- and electroencephalography were measured during the size estimation of 66 computer-generated body pictures varying in size from underweight to overweight. AN patients versus cont

A Structured Workflow for Screening, Scoring, and Visualizing Undergraduate Student Well-Being Questionnaire Data.

Questionnaire-based studies are widely used to examine student well-being, but the procedural route from raw responses to analyzable variables, statistical tables, and visual outputs is often insufficiently documented. This protocol demonstrates a structured and auditable workflow for processing anonymized undergraduate well-being questionnaire data collected with multiple Likert-type scale sections. The workflow begins with ethics approval, consent documentation, questionnaire configuration, and raw-data export, and then proceeds through response screening, duplicate-response review, missing-

The Unity Playback System: A tool for visualizing behavioral data in 3D Unity virtual environments.

The use of virtual environments, display technology, and eye tracking in behavioral studies has become more widespread in recent years as a result of drops in hardware cost and improvements in hardware mobility. Some studies of human behavior are conducted in 3D virtual environments created using tools such as the Unity game engine and open-source Unity Experiment Framework. However, the raw data from eye trackers, motion capture systems, and input devices (e.g., computer mouse, game controller, steering wheel/foot pedal system) are often noisy and difficult to validate and interpret without v

Differential-Privacy-Based Collaborative Protection for Visual and Location Data in UAV Semantic Communications.

Unmanned aerial vehicle semantic communications are increasingly required in low-altitude sensing, intelligent inspection, and emergency response, where raw image transmission is difficult to sustain under limited onboard resources and time-varying air-to-ground links. Meanwhile, the simultaneous transmission of visual semantic features and object-centre location metadata under third-party eavesdropping creates a dual-privacy vulnerability: an attacker can exploit both to reconstruct sensitive content. In this paper, we propose a differential privacy-based collaborative protection framework th

RPPAware: A software suite to preprocess, analyze and visualize reverse phase protein array data.

Reverse Phase Protein Arrays (RPPA) is a high-throughput technology used to profile levels of protein expression. Handling the large datasets generated by RPPA can be facilitated by appropriate software tools. Here, we describe RPPAware, a free and intuitive software suite that was developed specifically for analysis and visualization of RPPA data. RPPAware is a portable tool that requires no installation and was built using Java. Many modules of the tool invoke R to utilize the statistical features. To demonstrate the utility of RPPAware, data generated from screening brain regions of a mouse

Visual gamma oscillations: waves, correlations, and other phenomena, including comparison with experimental data.

Mean-field theory of brain dynamics is applied to explain the properties of gamma (> or approximately 30 Hz) oscillations of cortical activity often seen during vision experiments. It is shown that mm-scale patchy connections in the primary visual cortex can support collective gamma oscillations with the correct frequencies and spatial structure, even when driven by uncorrelated inputs. This occurs via resonances associated with the the periodic modulation of the network connections, rather than being due to single-cell properties alone. Near-resonant gamma waves are shown to obey the Schrödin

The time course of visual word recognition as revealed by linear regression analysis of ERP data.

EEG correlates of a range of psycholinguistic word properties were used to investigate the time course of access to psycholinguistic information during visual word recognition. Neurophysiological responses recorded in a visual lexical decision task were submitted to linear regression analysis. First, 10 psycholinguistic features of each of 300 stimulus words were submitted to a principal component analysis, which yielded four orthogonal variables likely to reflect separable processes in visual word recognition: Word length, Letter n-gram frequency, Lexical frequency and Semantic coherence of a

Accessible In-Home Gait Assessment Using Spatiotemporal Neural Networks with Visual and Kinematic Data.

Gait analysis traditionally relied on controlled laboratory settings, limiting its practical use in non-clinical environments. This study proposes an accessible framework utilizing consumer electronics, combining data from an Apple Watch and a visual sensor system, to measure stride time (ST) across three walking speeds: slow, normal, and fast. Data was collected from eight participants in a semi-controlled setting designed to match real-world conditions. The machine learning framework, combining Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) networks, wa
