Efficient Pretreatment of Burdock Straw with Ternary Deep Eutectic Solvents under Mild Conditions Improves Saccharification Efficiency.

Ternary deep eutectic solvents (T-DESs) show considerable potential for biomass refining. In this study, a novel T-DES pretreatment solvent, BE: Gly: UR (2:1:1), composed of betaine (BE), glycerol (Gly), and urea (UR), was developed for high solid loading. It was applied to pretreat burdock straw (BS) under mild conditions (70 °C for 20 min) at a solid-to-liquid ratio of 20%. The BE: Gly: UR system successfully removed 89.4% of lignin while retaining 95.8% of glucan. It also improved the yield of reducing sugars to 97.1% and increased enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency to 89.2%. After pretreatmen

Comparative assessment of potato starch dissolution and functionalization in conventional and water-modified deep eutectic solvents.

Native starch is insoluble in most conventional organic solvents because of its semi-crystalline structure stabilized by extensive hydrogen bonding, which limits homogeneous chemical modification. In this study, two deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on benzyltriethylammonium bromide (BTEAB)/urea and BTEAB/urea containing 10 wt% water (DES-H2O) were developed as environmentally friendly media for starch dissolution and subsequent esterification with maleic anhydride. The DESs acted simultaneously as solvent, reaction medium, and catalyst, eliminating the need for additional catalysts or volat

Antioxidant and hypoglycemic effects of phenolic-rich extracts from Eleutherococcus senticosus fruits using deep eutectic solvents.

Bioactive phenolic compounds from plants are valuable natural products with significant health benefits. Eleutherococcus senticosus (E. senticosus) fruit, a typically discarded resource, is a promising source of bioactive phenolics. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as a green solvent due to their low toxicity, biodegradability, and tunable properties. This study established an efficient ultrasound-microwave-assisted extraction using a tailored DES, followed by macroporous resin (HPD-600) purification. The purified extract (P-CF) achieved a 17-fold enrichment of polyphenols, reaching

Deep eutectic solvents for green extraction of plant essential oils: mechanisms, critical review, and future perspectives.

This review critically evaluates the mechanistic insights, technical controversies, and industrialization challenges of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) in the green extraction of plant essential oils (EOs), moving beyond the descriptive case enumeration that dominates the existing literature. First, a quantitative causal framework is established linking molecular hydrogen-bond interactions (molecular dynamics simulations, -25 to -35 kJ/mol) to macroscopic extraction kinetics (washing rate constant enhanced 2.6-14-fold) and oxygenated terpene enrichment (median increase 18-35%; maximum 3.45-fold)

Natural deep eutectic solvents for stilbenoid extraction from vine by-products: Solubilization and extraction efficiency study.

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) have emerged as sustainable alternatives to conventional solvents for polyphenol extraction; however, their rational selection remains a major challenge due to the vast number of possible component combinations and the lack of rapid screening approaches. This study aimed to develop a rapid and cost-effective ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis)-based screening method to assess stilbenoid solubility in NADES without requiring pure standards, and to use this approach to guide the selection and optimization of a NADES-assisted extraction process. Twenty NADES were s

HF-MMLLE using natural deep eutectic solvents for determination of potential lung cancer biomarkers in urine.

This work expands the use of a natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) as an alternative extractor solvent for organic solvents. Hollow fiber-microporous membrane liquid-liquid extraction (HF-MMLLE) coupled to the 96-well plate system was employed for the determination of hexanal and heptanal in urine samples. The NADES used as the extractor solvent consisted of dodecanoic acid:hexanoic acid (1:3, molar ratio). Method optimization was carried out using univariate and multivariate approaches. Extractions were performed for 60 min, followed by 30 min of derivatization reaction with 2,4-dinitrophen

Green and efficient extraction of sorghum 3-deoxyanthocyanidins using natural deep eutectic solvents and their bioactivities.

Sorghum 3-deoxyanthocyanidins (3-DAs) exhibit notable bioactivity but are limited by low extraction efficiency. Nine natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) were prepared using choline chloride with various organic acids. Their structures and physicochemical properties were characterized. Extraction efficiency was influenced by viscosity and HBD structure, with malate-based NADES (ChCl-Ma) showing the highest yield under optimized conditions (25% water, 40 °C, 1:20, 30 min). Compared with methanol extraction, the 3-DAs-enriched extract obtained by ChCl-Ma exhibited superior antioxidant and gly

Deep Eutectic Solvents Containing Symmetric 1,3-Diether-2-propanol Hydrogen Bond Donors Based on Glycerol Skeletons.

The unique properties, renewability, and market availability of glycerol (and related molecules) make it an attractive candidate for transformation in numerous applications. The present work utilizes molecules containing glycerol skeletons for the preparation of deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The field of chemical sciences is rapidly adopting DESs as an alternative medium. Not only are the components of DESs inexpensive and often greener than conventional alternatives, but there is a large variety of identified components that can be combined to form DESs with different physicochemical propert

Insights from Femtosecond Transient Absorption Spectroscopy into the Structure-Function Relationship of Glyceline Deep Eutectic Solvents.

This study aimed to determine the structure-function relationship (SFR) for ChCl-glycerol mixtures, a deep eutectic solvent (DES), by investigating their microscopic solvation dynamics and how it relates to their macroscopic properties across varying concentrations of ChCl. Femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy revealed two distinct solvation dynamics time constants: τ1, governed by glycerol-glycerol interactions, and τ2, dominated by the choline response. The τ2 minimum at 25-30 mol % ChCl closely aligned with the eutectic composition (~33.33 mol % ChCl), where the glycerol ne

Sustainable valorization of Inonotus obliquus via temperature-gated natural deep eutectic solvents extraction: Polysaccharide-antioxidant partitioning.

Inonotus obliquus is a medicinal mushroom rich in bioactive metabolites, including polysaccharides and antioxidants, that provide notable nutritional and therapeutic benefits. However, conventional extraction techniques are hindered by low efficiency, thermal degradation of high-molecular-weight β-glucans, and poor retention of heat-sensitive antioxidants. To overcome these limitations, this study developed a temperature-gated natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) extraction strategy for Inonotus obliquus. Specifically, hydrophilic NADES based on choline chloride (ChCl)/polyol systems were o

Characterization of the Phytochemical Profile of Halophytes (Limonium Mill., Plumbaginaceae) with Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents Extraction.

Limonium Mill. (Plumbaginaceae) is a genus comprising many species, some of which are reported to possess high bioactivity and are used as food, medicinal herbs, and fodder. Here we report the use of different deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and natural DESs (NADESs) to study the phytochemical composition of plants of the genus Limonium Mill. Most of the organic solvents commonly used for extracting phytochemicals from plants are hazardous to health and may harm the environment. Hence, their replacement with environmentally friendly solvents, particularly NADESs, is desirable. We performed ultra

Utilizing Deep Eutectic Solvents in the Recycle, Recovery, Purification and Miscellaneous Uses of Rare Earth Elements.

The boosted interest in using rare earth elements (REEs) in modern technologies has also increased the necessity of their recovery from various sources, including raw materials and wastes. Though hydrometallurgy plays a key role in these recovery processes, some drawbacks (apparent or not) of these processes (including the use of aggressive mineral acids, harmful extractants, and diluents, etc.) have led to the development of an environmental friendship subclass named solvometallurgy, in which non-aqueous solvents substituted to the aqueous media of the hydrometallurgical processing. Microwave-ultra-fast recovery of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries by deep eutectic solvents.

The large-scale use of electric vehicles produced massive discarded lithium-ion batteries, containing many recyclable valuable metals and toxic and harmful substances. Biodegradable and recyclable deep eutectic solvent (DES) is considered a green recycling technology for spent LIBs. Herein, we proposed a microwave-enhanced approach to shorten the leaching time in the urea/lactic acid: choline chloride: ethylene glycol DES system. The dipole moments induced by urea or lactic acid on LiCoO2 surface increased over two orders of magnitude under the high electric field. Because of this, over 90 % o
