BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation according to Vojta is a neurophysiological method used to obtain reflex responses in muscles following stimulation of particular activation zones.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to objectively evaluate the muscular responses following stimulation according to Vojta's method. The possible routes of spinal transmission responsible for the phenomenon of muscle activation in upper and lower extremities are considered.
METHODS: Polyelectromyographic (pEMG) recordings in the upper and lower extremities in healthy volunteers (N = 25; aged 24 ± 1 year) were performed to find

The effect of a diet enriched with fats on the muscle performance of a patient with McArdle's syndrome was studied. The tolerance to physical activity was studied during exercise (ergometric examination) and by sustained abduction to 90 degrees of the deltoid muscle, both after a three-day period on a normal diet and after a three-day period on a fat-rich diet. After the first period a woody spasm of the deltoid muscle was found which lasted several days. After a period on fat-rich diet the patient's physical fitness was increased and the recovery period after the acute load was shorter. Moreo

To allow adequate access to the subacromial region of the shoulder the authors designed a multipurpose approach. The exposure consists of an anterior and a posterior part. In the anterior part, the deltoid fibres are separated between the anterior and middle thirds form the acromioclavicular joint for 5 cm distally; this provides the required access for the management of impingement syndrome, calcific tendinitis, bicipital tendon lesions and most tears of the rotator cuff. By extending the anterior part of the incision posteriorly over the supraspinatus muscle, this muscle may be advanced late

Anatomical relationships between the radial nerve, the deltoid muscle insertions and several bony landmarks have been investigated to assess the feasibility of surgical transfer of the deltoid transfer during humeral osteotomy. Eleven embalmed human specimens were dissected. Each specimen included the whole thorax, both shoulders and upper limbs. Spatial position of the radial nerve along the radial groove, the deltoid muscle, and several anatomical landmarks was digitised using a three-dimensional (3D) digitiser. Sixteen distances and one angle characterizing the relationships between the pat

BACKGROUND: Whether vitamin D deficiency is related to rotator cuff muscle and tendon physiology is controversial.
PURPOSE: To assess the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and various gene expression patterns in patients with rotator cuff tears.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: During arthroscopic surgery, samples from the supraspinatus muscle, deltoid muscle, and supraspinatus tendon were acquired from 12 patients with vitamin D deficiency (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration <20 ng/dL) and 12 patients with sufficient vitamin D levels (control group, serum 25

OBJECTIVE: Decremental responses in the repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) test in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients have been reported, although their possible diagnostic role has received little investigation. We investigated their diagnostic role in differentiation between ALS and cervical spondylotic amyotrophy (CSA), an important ALS mimic especially in Japan.
METHODS: Patients were prospectively enrolled and the diagnosis was confirmed by follow-up. RNS was performed on the abductor pollicis brevis (APB), upper trapezius (trapezius) and deltoid muscles.
RESULTS: Enrolled sub

BACKGROUND: Aripiprazole lauroxil (AL), a long-acting injectable antipsychotic for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults, can be started with either 21 days of daily oral aripiprazole supplementation or a 1-day initiation regimen consisting of a single injection of a NanoCrystal® Dispersion formulation of AL (ALNCD) and a single dose of 30 mg oral aripiprazole. This phase I study assessed the pharmacokinetics and safety of deltoid versus gluteal ALNCD injections.
METHODS: Patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (N = 47) were randomized 1:1 to receive a single intramuscular

Classical anatomical teaching suggests that the deltoid muscle is the main abductor of the shoulder. We present three cases of proven complete paralysis of the deltoid with an almost full range of movement of the shoulder owing to the compensatory action of accessory muscles. The mechanisms by which this occurs are described.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is a widely used innovative procedure for managing shoulder pathologies like severe rotator cuff arthropathy, osteoarthritis with significant glenoid deformity, or proximal humerus fractures. RSA prosthesis designs utilize the deltoid muscle to bypass the role of the rotator cuff, and to generate most of the force required for shoulder elevation. As such, preoperative deltoid insufficiency or injury, as well as any intraoperative or postoperative complications involving the deltoid, can significantly impact patient outcome

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive lateral placement of plates on the humerus may be associated with a risk of injury to the radial nerve. Whereas this potential complication has been investigated in several studies, there is no data regarding potential injuries to the distal insertion of the deltoid muscle when the plates are passed distally in a submuscular tunnel.
METHODS: Minimally invasive plate placement was performed on eight arms in fresh cadavers. A lateral deltoid split approach was made and the plates were introduced in an antegrade submuscular manner from proximal to distal. A later

INTRODUCTION: Our literature review did not reveal any study on the results of triceps to deltoid nerve transfer done as a secondary procedure after an unsatisfactory primary intraplexus neurotization of the posterior division of the upper trunk.
PRESENTATION OF CASES: We report on three adults with C5-C6 brachial plexus injury who had an unsatisfactory deltoid function following primary intraplexus neurotization. Patients presented to our clinic late (14-16 months after injury). All patients had poor shoulder abduction (<40°) despite the presence of visible and palpable deltoid contractions.

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment for massive irreparable rotator cuff tears (MRCTs) remains unclear. The deltoid flap transfer has been described in the literature as an option for MRCT; however, it has a high retear rate and therefore its effectiveness is limited.
PURPOSE: To describe a modification of the deltoid flap transfer, termed the deltoid osteomuscular transfer (DOT), and assess its biomechanical effectiveness in the management of irreparable MRCT in a cadaveric model.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Eight fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders were tested. Segmenta

Electromyographic studies have been carried out on the quadriceps and deltoid muscles of a number of healthy parents of children with infantile spinal muscular atrophy (types I and II) and the results compared with those obtained in healthy controls of the same sex. The results indicated an increase in mean amplitude of action potentials in quadriceps and deltoid muscles in both fathers and mothers (statistically significant in the quadriceps in the latter) of children with type I spinal muscular atrophy (Werdnig-Hoffmann disease). Increase in the mean amplitude in the quadriceps and deltoid m

The deltoid extension lag sign has been developed to avoid the pitfalls confounding the diagnosis of an axillary nerve lesion. The physician elevates the arm into a position of near full extension. The patient is asked to attempt active maintenance of this position. If the deltoid is weak, the arm will drop. In five patients with traumatic axillary nerve palsy after anterior dislocation of the shoulder, the deltoid extension lag sign was used to evaluate the functional status of the deltoid muscle. The magnitude of the angular drop, or lag, of the arm was a precise indicator of the functional

Surface electromyography was performed for both heads of the biceps brachii in 11 healthy men while the muscles were under 30% maximum isometric shoulder flexion and abduction. Elbow related biceps activity was minimized by using a brace locked in neutral forearm rotation. Electromyographic activity was normalized as a percentage of maximal muscle contraction during 24 shoulder motions. Electromyographic activity was detected in all motions examined, suggesting that the biceps muscle acts as a flexor and an abductor of the shoulder. Both heads of the biceps muscle had higher activities during

Ten human cadaveric shoulders were tested with a dynamic shoulder model simulating physiologic rotator cuff, deltoid, and biceps muscle forces. The combined effect of the muscle forces and acromial structure on subacromial impingement was measured with minimally invasive, miniature pressure transducers. Shoulders with large acromial spurs had significantly greater impingement pressures at the anterolateral acromion in neutral, internal, and external rotation compared with those with flatter acromia. Application of a biceps muscle force reduced anterolateral acromial pressures by 10%. Failure t

STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study.
PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to identify physical findings useful for differentiating between cervical spondylotic amyotrophy (CSA) and rotator cuff tears to prevent the misdiagnosis of CSA as a rotator cuff tear.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: CSA and rotator cuff tears are often confused among patients presenting with difficulty in shoulder elevation.
METHODS: Twenty-five patients with CSA and 27 with rotator cuff tears were enrolled. We included five physical findings specific to CSA that were observed in both CSA and rotator cuff tear patients. Th

The study aimed to describe the changes in biomechanical properties of the supraspinatus tendon, deltoid muscle, and humeral head post arthroscopic rotator cuff repair using shear wave elastography. Shear wave velocity of the tendon, deltoid, and humeral head of 48 patients was measured at predetermined sites at 1 week, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months post repair. One-way ANOVA with Tukey's correction and Spearman's correlation were performed. Mean±SEM healing tendon stiffness, adjacent to tendon footprint, increased from 1 week (6.2±0.2 m/s) to 6 months (7.5±0.3 m/s) and 12 months

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) proteins can infiltrate skeletal muscle and infrequently cause a myopathy. 99m Technetium-pyrophosphate (99m Tc-PYP) is a validated biomarker for cardiac involvement in variant and wild-type ATTR (ATTRv and ATTRwt, respectively). The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that 99m Tc-PYP is a biomarker for muscle burden of ATTR.
METHODS: Radioisotope uptake in the deltoid muscles of patients with ATTR was compared to uptake in control subjects without amyloidosis in a retrospective study. 99m Tc-PYP scans were evaluated in 11 patients

BACKGROUND: C5 nerve root palsy is a known complication after cervical laminectomy or laminoplasty, characterized by weakness of the deltoid and bicep brachii muscles. The efficacy of intraoperative monitoring of these muscles is currently unclear. In the current prospective study, intraoperative monitoring through somatosensory (SSEPs), motor (TcMEPs) evoked potentials and real-time electromyography activity (EMG) were analyzed for their ability to detect or prevent deltoid muscle weakness after surgery.
METHODS: One hundred consecutive patients undergoing laminectomy/laminoplasty with or wi
